I got it -- use 'play' or 'mpg123' .

I have xbindkeys installed.

I cant use anything in the  .xbindkeys -- how do I know it is
working correctly?

mpg123, or its successor (?) mpg321. There is also mp3blaster if you are 
looking for a TUI with playlists.
