  (draft-ietf-netmod-geo-location-11.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Robert Wilton.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-geo-location/

Technical Summary

This document defines a generic geographical location object YANG
grouping. The geographical location grouping is intended to be used
in YANG models for specifying a location on or in reference to Earth
   or any other astronomical object.

Working Group Summary

There were no noteworthy WG process issues. Controversial points were
resolved. No items had particularly rough consensus.

Document Quality

There are no known implementations known to the Shepherd. No vendors have
indicated their plan to implement the specification. It was originally
forwarded to support DT's Terra Stream project

The draft had additional review by non-IETF experts Ben Koziol and Jim
Biard, and I would like to thank them for them help in reviewing the technical
aspects of this YANG model.

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'YANG Instance Data File Format' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-yang-instance-file-format-21.txt)

2021-10-15 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'YANG Instance Data File Format'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-yang-instance-file-format-21.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Robert Wilton.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-yang-instance-file-format/

Technical Summary

There is a need to document data defined in YANG models when a live
server is unavailable. Data is often needed at design or
implementation time or needed when a live running server is
unavailable. This document specifies a standard file format for YANG
instance data, which follows the syntax and semantics of existing
YANG models, and annotates it with metadata.

Working Group Summary

This document is clearly useful and had good support in the WG.

Document Quality

The document has had a good level of discussion. I would like to thank
Kent, the shepherd who performed as detailed review of this document
that improved its quality and consistency.

Ericsson implemented an earlier version of this draft and plans to
implement the final version once it's published. I expect other
vendors to implement. Other IETF network management work
makes use of the file format defined by this document.

There was a YANG doctor review during last call.

Personnel

   The Shepherd is Kent Watsen.
The responsible AD is Robert Wilton.

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'Comparison of NMDA datastores' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-nmda-diff-12.txt)

2021-09-13 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'Comparison of NMDA datastores'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-nmda-diff-12.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Robert Wilton.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-nmda-diff/

Technical Summary

This document defines a simple YANG RPC operation to compare management
datastores that comply with the NMDA architecture.

Working Group Summary

NMDA diff attracted as significant amount of discussion due to the utility of
being able to compare two datastores. As a result of this effort we believe
that the working group consensus reflects broad support for the current draft.

Document Quality

The Document has been fairly widely reviewed. A couple of individuals
(including one of the authors) questioned during IETF LC whether there was
industry support for implementing this new RPC. Partly because the work
doesn't go far enough (e.g., comparing the contents of a datastore to a file,
and also the output format (YANG Patch) not being as useful as an alternative
NETCONF edit-config based format). However, this RPC is clearly helpful for
managing implementations conforming to NMDA, and I would prefer to see this
current work published, and then interested parties can look at extending the
work as appropriate.

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'A YANG Data Model for Factory Default Settings' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-factory-default-15.txt)

2020-05-11 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'A YANG Data Model for Factory Default Settings'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-factory-default-15.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Robert Wilton.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-factory-default/

Technical Summary

This document defines a YANG data model to allow clients to reset a server
back to its factory default condition. It also defines a "factory-default"
datastore to allow clients to read the factory default configuration for the
device.

The reset operation may be used, e.g., when the existing configuration has
major errors so re-starting the configuration process from scratch is the
best option.

Working Group Summary

The work has strong consensus in the WG.

The Secdir review highlighed a concern with the general boilerplate security
text used for YANG models. This is not specific to this document or the
YANG model defined in this document and should not delay its publication.
We should discuss with the security ADs whether further updates to the
standard YANG model security text is required.

Document Quality

The document has received some, but not a lot, of WG LC reviews. However,
the
document is relatively short, simple, and is in good shape.

No known implementations or commitments.

The document went through a YANG Doctor review as part of the Last Call
process.

Personnel

The document shepherd is Kent Watsen.
The responsible Area Director is Robert Wilton.

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'YANG Module Tags' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-module-tags-10.txt)

2020-03-17 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'YANG Module Tags'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-module-tags-10.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari, Ignas Bagdonas and Alissa Cooper.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-module-tags/

Technical Summary

This document provides for the association of tags with YANG modules. The
expectation is for such tags to be used to help classify and organize modules.
A method for defining, reading and writing modules’ tags is provided. Tags may
be standardized and assigned during module definition, assigned by
implementations, or dynamically defined and set by users. This document
provides guidance to future model writers and, as such, this document updates
RFC 8407.

Working Group Summary

The WG had significant questions on how module tags might be used. Section 1.1
of the document dwells on how and why module tags are applied, addressing
significant points in this discussion from the vantage point of WG
participants. Possible usage of the module tags was the most controversial part
of the document progress, which eventually came to consensus.

Document Quality

There is a substantial interest from the model user community to have module
tags functionality available. The document has received significant reviews,
including vigorous WG debate that resulted in significant changes to the
document and multiple WG last calls. YANG doctors have reviewed the document.

Personnel

Joel Jaeggli is the Document Shepherd for this document. Alissa Cooper is the
Responsible Area Director.

IANA Note

sent to i...@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the beginning of
the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

This document defines two strategies for handling long lines in
width-bounded text content. One strategy is based on the historic
use of a single backslash ('\') character to indicate where line-
folding has occurred, with the continuation occurring with the first
non-space (' ') character on the next line. The second strategy
extends the first strategy by adding a second backslash character to
identify where the continuation begins and thereby able to handle
cases not supported by the first strategy. Both strategies use a
self-describing header enabling automated reconstitution of the
   original content.

Abstract

This document provides for the association of tags with YANG modules.
The expectation is for such tags to be used to help classify and
organize modules. A method for defining, reading and writing a
modules tags is provided. Tags may be standardized and assigned
during module definition; assigned by implementations; or dynamically
defined and set by users. This document provides guidance to future
model writers and, as such, this document updates [RFC8407].

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'A YANG Data Model for Syslog Configuration' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-syslog-model-26.txt)

2018-03-17 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'A YANG Data Model for Syslog Configuration'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-syslog-model-26.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Network Modeling Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Benoit Claise.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-syslog-model/

Technical Summary

This document defines a YANG data model for the configuration of a
syslog process. It is intended this model be used by vendors who
implement syslog in their systems.

Working Group Summary

Was there anything in WG process that is worth noting? For
example, was there controversy about particular points or
were there decisions where the consensus was particularly
  rough?

Yes, the model initially had defined support for configuring
Syslog over TPC (RFC 6587). However, after reviewing the
reasoning for why RFC 6587 was made HISTORIC, as decided to
remove the support. Some stated that their companies support
Syslog over TCP and now they would have to augment this model
with a vendor-specific extension. There may be a subtle
distinction between IETF defining an insecure protocol versus
defining a data model to configure, amongst other things, an
insecure protocol. We believe we did the right thing, from
an IETF perspective, but please double-check this.

Document Quality
Are there existing implementations of the protocol? Have a
significant number of vendors indicated their plan to
implement the specification? Are there any reviewers that
merit special mention as having done a thorough review,
e.g., one that resulted in important changes or a
conclusion that the document had no substantive issues? If
there was a MIB Doctor, Media Type or other expert review,
what was its course (briefly)? In the case of a Media Type
review, on what date was the request posted?

This draft defines a data model (not a protocol). So far,
two vendors have indicated that they're interested in
implementing this data model. There was a YANG Doctor
review on the -17 that was successful:

Working Group Summary

Yang tree diagrams are perhaps unusually for yang not
intended specifically to be machine readable, but rather
to display with maximum legibility spinlified graphical
representations of modules. the dicussion that led to the
current formulation is therefore somewhat unusual territory

Technical Summary

This document contains a specification of three YANG modules and one

Abstract

The YANG data modeling language is currently being considered for a
wide variety of applications throughout the networking industry at
large. Many standards-defining organizations (SDOs), open source

Charter: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/charter-ietf-netmod/

The Network Modeling (NETMOD) working group is responsible for the YANG
data modeling language, which can be used to specify network management
data models that are transported over such protocols as NETCONF and
RESTCONF, and guidelines for developing YANG models. The NETMOD working
group addresses general topics related to the use of the YANG language
and YANG models, for example, the mapping of YANG modeled data into
various encodings. Finally, the NETMOD working group also defines core
YANG models used as basic YANG building blocks, and YANG models that do
not otherwise fall under the charter of any other IETF working group.
The NETMOD WG may include work on YANG modules device profiles that do
not otherwise fall under the charter of any other IETF working group.

The NETMOD WG is responsible for:

   a) Maintaining the data modeling language YANG. This effort entails
periodically updating the specification to address new
  requirements as they arise.

   b) Maintaining the guidelines for developing YANG models. This effort
is primarily driven by updates made to the YANG specification.

   c) Maintaining a conceptual framework in which YANG models are used.
This effort entails describing the generic context that in YANG
exists and how certain YANG statements interact in that context.
An example of this is YANG's relationship with datastores.

   d) Maintaining encodings for YANG modeled data. This effort entails
updating encodings already defined by the NETMOD working group
(XML and JSON) to accommodate changes to the YANG specification,
and defining new YANG encodings that are needed, and yet do not
fall under the charter of any other active IETF working group.

   e) Maintaining YANG models used as basic YANG building blocks. This
effort entails updating existing YANG models (ietf-yang-types and
ietf-inet-types) as needed, as well as defining additional core
  YANG data models when necessary.

   f) Defining and maintaining YANG models that do not fall under the
charter of any other active IETF working group.

The NETMOD working group consults with the NETCONF working group to
ensure that new requirements are understood and can be met by the
protocols (e.g., NETCONF and RESTCONF) developed within that working
   group.

The NETMOD working group does not serve as a review team for YANG
modules developed by other working groups. Instead, the YANG doctors,
[1] as organized by the OPS area director responsible for network
management, will act as advisors for other working groups and provide
YANG reviews for the OPS area directors.

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'A YANG Data Model for Routing Management' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-routing-cfg-25.txt)

2016-11-03 Thread The IESG
The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'A YANG Data Model for Routing Management'
  (draft-ietf-netmod-routing-cfg-25.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the NETCONF Data Modeling Language
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Benoit Claise and Joel Jaeggli.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-routing-cfg/

Technical Summary

This document contains a specification of three YANG modules and one
submodule. Together they form the core routing data model which
serves as a framework for configuring and managing a routing
subsystem. It is expected that these modules will be augmented by
additional YANG modules defining data models for control plane
protocols, route filters and other functions. The core routing data
model provides common building blocks for such extensions -- routes,
routing information bases (RIB), and control plane protocols.

Working Group Summary

This document has been discussed for a very long time within the
WG. At this point it has received extensive reviews and has solid
consensus behind it. One notable objection can be found [1]. Some of
the points are raised and are in the rough, others are addressed in
   other ways.
   [1] https://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/netmod/current/msg16705.html

Document Quality

This set of documents received extensive review within the working
group and ample time was spent to review and reconsider all design
choices. The document has been reviewed by Martin Bjorklund, who
is also a YANG doctor. Since the document is heavily touching on
routing, specific review was requested (by a previous chair) and lead to
a number of changes and another co-author being added to the document.

   Multiple implementations are reportedly underway.

(NETCONF). This document defines YANG version 1.1.

Working Group Summary

This is an update of YANG 1.0 as defined in RFC 6020. The working
group used an issue tracker and a number of virtual interim meetings
to discuss all bug fix proposals and feature requests. The document
went through two WG last calls and there is broad consensus on the
  final version.

Document Quality

Recent versions of the open source pyang implementation support this
specification. Additional commercial implementations are expected to
  follow soon.

Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Benoit Claise and Joel Jaeggli.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-yang-json/

Technical Summary

This document defines encoding rules for representing configuration,
state data, RPC operation or action input and output parameters, and
notifications defined using YANG as JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)
text.

Working Group Summary

The JSON encoding is one of the two media types supported by the
RESTCONF protocol [draft-ietf-netconf-restconf]. This document was discussed
multiple times during the RESTCONF specification process. The main issue has
been
around the encoding of the "anyxml" type, which YANG 1.1 no longer
recommends using. The
document went through 3 WG last calls, and there is broad consensus on the
final version.

Document Quality

There are several existing RESTCONF implementations, and some others being
worked on, that either support both XML and JSON encoding, or are JSON-only,
   for example:
  * YumaWork’s YumaPro platform's SDK
  * Linux Foundation’s OpenDaylight platform
  * Juniper’s Contrail Service Orchestration platform

Other tools and libraries also support the JSON encoding defined
   in this document, including:
 * The popular `pyang` utility
 * The libyang library

[netmod] Protocol Action: 'Defining and Using Metadata with YANG' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-netmod-yang-metadata-07.txt)

2016-03-21 Thread The IESG

  (draft-ietf-netmod-yang-metadata-07.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the NETCONF Data Modeling Language
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Benoit Claise and Joel Jaeggli.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netmod-yang-metadata/

Technical Summary

This document defines a YANG extension statement that allows for
defining metadata annotations in YANG modules. The document also
specifies XML and JSON encoding of annotations and other rules for
annotating instances of YANG data nodes.

Working Group Summary

There has been some controversy regarding the fact that metadata
annotations are defined using a YANG extension, which means that they
are by definition optional to implement. On the other hand, introducing
a new built-in YANG statement was considered a big change that's not
suited for inclusion in the minor (1.1) revision of YANG.

Document Quality

In the past, vendors of management software and networking devices
introduced a number of proprietary metadata annotations for various
purposes. This document allows for including information about
annotations in YANG data models so that standard annotations can be
defined in an interoperable way, and in both supported encodings (XML
   and JSON).

The RESTCONF protocol document [draft-ietf-netconf-restconf] has a
normative reference to this document for the encoding of metadata.
Also, the widely used tool `pyang` has already been updated to support
   this draft.

Charter:

The NETMOD working group has defined the data modeling language
YANG, which can be used to specify network management data models that
are transported over such protocols as NETCONF and
RESTCONF. The NETMOD working group also defined a number of core data
models as basic building blocks.

The purpose of the NETMOD working group is to support the ongoing
deployment of YANG by maintaining and evolving the core YANG
specifications based on usage experience.

The NETMOD WG may also develop any additional data models written in YANG
that the WG considers core building blocks and that do not fall under the
charters of other active IETF working groups. The NETMOD WG may simply
add such milestones as it sees fit, with the advice and consent of the
responsible AD.

The NETMOD Working Group will produce a maintenance release of the core
YANG specification called YANG 1.1, that is a revision of RFC 6020. The
changes to RFC 6020 are restricted in the following ways:

- All compliant YANG 1.0 modules must be accepted as compliant YANG 1.1
modules.

- All known ambiguities of YANG 1.0 and all reported defects and errata
will be addressed.

- YANG 1.1 is not adding fundamentally new data modeling concepts to the
language.

- The changes of the specification will be kept to the minimum necessary
to achieve the previously stated goals.

The NETMOD Working Group will also revise the Guidelines for Authors and
Reviewers of YANG Data Models (RFC 6087) in order to fix any ambiguities
and to incorporate the lessons learned by producing YANG data models.

The NETMOD Working Group will produce a specification how YANG-defined
data trees can be represented in JSON.

The NETMOD Working Group will not serve as a review team for YANG modules
developed by other working groups. The YANG doctors, organized by the OPS
area director responsible for network management, can act as advisors for
other working groups and they provide YANG reviews for the OPS area
directors [1].

The WG will consult with the NETCONF working group to ensure that
NETMOD's decision do not conflict with NETCONF and RESTCONF.
