Seems that you don't have the developement packages needed for compiling
programs.
Maybe a devel package :

urpmi libgtk+1.2-devel

If you are a gmail user having problems with the gmail reply-to
settings, do the following:

1) Go to your Gmail settings

2) Select the other reply-to radio button (the one with the entry box)

3) Type into the reply-to entry box <> (in other words Less-then
followed by a Greater-then sign).

Important: If you leave the box empty it is not going to work. You have
to type <> in the box!

This should eliminate the reply-to header and mailing list replies will
now go to the list as they should.

The blurb said "epsecially recommended" for use with Sony memory sticks.
Do you think the 5-7 formats are a better option. Saw those too.

Thank you. Urpmi didn't work - can't remember what it said now. Just
downloading the other packages now to satisfy dependencies. It's a bit like
magic really - the way it tells you what else you need!

is really what this is.

No HardDrake doesn't recognise it. Tried booting with camera on and plugged
in - nothing.

The other problem is that with 10.1 you meet the problem of the floating
sdx - where the mount point can change its name every time you try it, so
any mount that's set up will not find the drive. You may have to use
HardDrake to see what device name it has, then amend your mount-point to
match. A PITB.

Someone suggested a card reader, so I've had a look at them, and found one
recommended for Sony cameras, which is linux compatible. I've emailed the
company for more specific info. It is only NZ$30, so would be a worthwhile
purchase.

Most USB card readers work well. Not all of them tell the system when
you change cards in them. You may have to put the card in the reader,
and then plug the reader in the USB port.

Lastly, I'd recommend getting the latest packages for Digikam. The ones
with the distro are fairly old, and it sometimes helps. I'm running
digikam-0.7.1-1tex.i586.rpm.

I'm downloading now - do I need to uninstall the old packages, or will the new
ones simply install over them?

Thanks

If you are downloading it as an RPM package, then it will replace the
old package. BOth urpmi and rpm -Uvh will remove the old package when
installing a newer version of the same package. That is one of the nice
things about the RPM package format.

Ah... here it is:
A key such as KERNEL="sd?1" would match KERNEL names such as "sda1",
"sdb1", "sdc1", and equally importantly, it will not match KERNEL names
such as sda, sdb, or sg1. The purpose of this key is to ignore the
/dev/sda and /dev/sg1 nodes. The device is a digital camera -* I would

Reverse in you case maybe?
This is within this link
http://www.reactivated.net/udevrules.php
What he is talking about here is creating links for digital camera that
is accessed using usb_storage, and so looks like a SCSI drive to the
system. He is saying that he would not want to run fdisk on this device,
so he would not need /dev/sda, just /dev/sda1. I don't know what would
happen if you tried to repartition a digital camera mounted this way,
and apparently the author didn't know ether, and didn't want to find out.
He is also talking about what happens if your rules do not create all
possible device names for a drive, and you use fdisk to create new
partitions. You may not be able to access the new partitions without
removing the device, and re-attaching it, or rebooting.

One other point, you normally do not mount the entire drive when using
hard drives - you mount the partitions. But you run fdisk on the entire
drive. (Well, you could run fdisk on a partition, but why?) So, you run
fdisk on /dev/sda to create/change/delete partitions. But you would
mount /dev/sda1.

I don't know if I should bring this point up, but you could, if you
really wanted to, use /dev/sda in place of /dev/sda1 to create/mount a
file system that would be the entire drive. It is not really a good
idea, but it can be done. Some of the tools will complain about the
missing partition table, but you don't have to have one.

I deleted the wrong message, so this is not a direct reply to

When you were trying to work with the drive, what device were
you giving fdisk? If you unmount the FAT partition first, you
should be able to use something like "fdisk /dev/sda" to get
at the partition table. If you can, then it is simple to
change the drive to another file system. If you are happy
with it being one large partition, then change the type (t)
to 83 (ext2/3) and save (w) the updated partition table.
Then run "mke2fs -j /dev/sda1" to create an ext3 file system.
If you have any data on the drive you want to keep, BACK IT UP
before starting this.
Please keep in mind that the drive may not be /dev/sda and the
partition may not be /dev/sda1 - it depends on your system,
and how the drive was partitioned.

Just a newbie thought : Can you do as root :
# cat /etc/fstab | grep sd
And post it back here. Be sure the device is
plugged in first.
TIA

Even easier: "cat /dev/sd" on the CML and hit ...that way
you'll see what's there.
When inserting/plugging the device the specific /dev/sd* file
gets made and also gets removed when unplugging.
Repeat after me:
is my best on the command line..!;)

ONLY I SPECIFICALLY WANTED TO VIEW THE FSTAB ENTRY TO CHECK ITS
OPTIONS!

Here it is (on one line) :
/dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto
umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users
0 0

Thanks for this, it tells me that the problem I had does not matter here
because you have sync set and not default.

One thing this newbie read somewhere is that /dev/sda? are not
formatable ?? Can someone clarify this ?

I only mention it here because on other postings within this thread I
have seen the references to " sda1 " and only wondered if this is a
first step problem.

Of course I know about the umask=0022 being stupid, but hitherto I
haven't found a way to let it stay =0.

Each time my daughter uses the drive, I have to unmount it, edit
fstab to umask=0 and remount. Then she can use it. Been nagging
me for months with the other "removables" like camera, mp3 players
and memory sticks. - And : whacking supermount doesn't change a
thing.

If I ever find the daemon that changes my fstab against my will,
I'll fetch my 9 mm Neuhausen...

It should be. Do you get it for all packages? One thing to watch for -
it will give you the bad signature error, and go on to say that it could
not open the package. This error could be worded better. What actualy
happened is that the download of the package failed, so the signature
could not be tested. I think it is two standard error messages,
generated by two different parts of the program. The bad signature error
is true, but is not the real problem.

if you like the cli, make wavs with this script,
You do need sox and mpg123.

from there burn the wavs as usual

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mp3_lisa]$ cat /home/bnl/music/tools/mp32wav

 mpg123 -b 1 -s $BASENAME.mp3 | sox -t raw -r 44100 -s -w -c2 -
$BASENAME.wav

Re: [newbie] KDE 3.4

2005-03-19 Thread Mr. Geek
Guys, you're beating yourselves up for nothing on this. After you add
Thac's RPM's to urpmi, take a moment to install the ICE desktop or some
other one. Chances are that you'll have at least 2 desktop environments
installed anyway.

Log out of KDE, and log back in as root or a normal user, but log into
the alternate desktop, no matter what it is. Find Mandrake Control
Center, open it and switch your package selection to the third button
marked "All Packages, By Group".

Change that so it reads "All Packages, By Medium Repository", and expand
the one marked as "thac's.rpms". Now have a look at the rpms which have
version numbers of "3.4.0-1.mdk10.1.thac".

Start with the basics like the i18n package for your preferred language
and kdebase or kde-common. Mandrake will automatically select any
dependancies. Make sure you install any new packages which may be in
Thac's repository which refer to 'mdkkdm', 'mandrake_desk',
'mandrakegalaxy', 'mandrakelinux-create-kde-mdk-menu',
'mandrakelinux-kde-config-file', etc. You get the idea.

Keep installing KDE 3.4 in small groups of packages - like all the
kdepim packages, or whichever you need. In the process of doing this
update, Mandrake will delete (uninstall) any unneeded KDE 3.2 or 3.3
packages. Once you have everything you want or need, you're done.

If you've already downloaded the rpms from Thac's site, copy them into
/var/cache/urpmi/rpms and MCC will use them instead of downloading fresh
copies, saving you some time.

Once you're all done, log out of this desktop environment and log back
into KDE and enjoy.

Yes, I didn't say it wouldn't work, just that it is deprecated in favor of

Well, my philosophy is to inform people of the potential risks and let them
make their own decisions. So instead of saying "go ahead, do this, it works
for me," I prefer to say "these are the two ways of doing it and there are
potential pitfalls of doing it one of those ways." Then let the user make an
informed choice.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just helpful by providing good information
and making a clarification where I thought it would be helpful.

Mikkel, again I'm only quoting what I have read, but I understand that it's
not wise to label DVDs. Again it is the speed and density that make them
more sensitive to wobble if the label is not absolutely balanced. The

For printing on CDs, Epson has an ink jet that isn't too out of line

OK - I don't know anything about printers on parallel ports, but I have seen
an article about it somewhere, recently. Try googling for it, and also try
searching Linux Format and Linux Magazine - I think both are available
on-line. I'm guessing it was 2-3 months since I read about it.

Mikkel, again I'm only quoting what I have read, but I understand that it's
not wise to label DVDs. Again it is the speed and density that make them
more sensitive to wobble if the label is not absolutely balanced. The
article I read though that it was almost impossible to safely label them.

I've been looking at the printers, too, as mine will have to be retired soon,
but I don't know whether they are a viable option for DVDs. It would be nice
if they were.

That was mostly for my own curiousity, specially since Greg an
Mikkel have some misgiving about usin 'rpm --rebuild'

All I can say is "Works for Me" an always has
As you can see the src.rpm created more than two dozen kdeutils
packages. More than I have with a normal install. This is why I
cited 'rpm -Fvh' which would then only update the packages I'm usin.

Now, James, when you installed the system did you select
"Development" ? Without those additions to your system you probly
can't compile anything.

Other questions: are you just doin all this as an exercise? an
why don't you just use Mandrakes' pre-compiled packages for
kdeutils? IOW's, what are you tryin to accomplish?

They bank on the premise that most all the public thinks big brand names

OTOH, the big brand names do _usually_ put better, more durable
coating (the label side where the recording is actually done). This is
important if you're fixin to handle the CD's a bunch, or store them for
a while. So considerin that, it's often worth payin twice the price to
get media that's all made by the same damn manufacturer anyhow. I
suspect the brand names buy the cheap 'generic' CD's, then add the extra
'branded' coating on top of the generic manufacturers.

In this sense the result is not more reliable for burnin, but will
survive more handlin an storage.

I usually put a pretty printed label on them anyway, so that is less of
a problem. But one day I would like to get one of the printers that will

Re: [newbie] src.rpm headaches.

2005-03-19 Thread James Henry Maiewski
Hello,

I thank you both for this information, but I'm not getting anything
out of this package. the rpm --rebuild gives:

error: kdeutils-3.2.3-28.3.101mdk.src.rpm cannot be installed

the same happens with rpmbuild --rebuild (both as root and otherwise).

I assume that the package is at fault and will look for another
source. Another question I have, is why I urpmi --install-src yield
nothing.

Thanks,
JHM

You don't say how you did your 'further investigation' but if it involved
becoming root, there's your answer. Root can change it to anyone you like.
(If it didn't involve root, then open a console, su and give the root
password, then type
chown carlton /home/carlton/.ICEauthority
That should do it.

Yes, I read the man page.

Well, on my 10.1 system, they are actualy in /usr/lib/rom/rpmpopt-4.2.2
and if I wanted to track it down, there is probably another file
symlinked to it, that is defined in rpmrc, but I don't feel like going
through all the effort. There are a lot of things that can be changed
the same way, to customize the way rpm behaves.

As I said before, I think that's largely true of CDs, but it's worth noting
that when I bought my hardware dvd recorder at Christmas it came with an A4
sheet of recommended disks. That suggests to me that they think there is a
quality issue. I did read that it was the density of burn required on a dvd
that causes the issue. Of course I'm only quoting. As for my own
experience, one of my coasters was done on this box, so may have been my own
fault, but the other was done on the stand-alone recorder, where I have no
control. Of course, it may be coincidence, but for the small price
difference, and it *is* small now, at least here, I'll play safe and still to
recommended disks.

2.6.11-2mdkK74 preempt K7 gcc-3.4 (rpm-build-4.2.3-9mdk)
the resulting rpms will then be found in
  /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/
Just as a general rule it is not a good idea to compile src.rpms as root,
because if the buildroot variable is not set, the package will actually get
installed on your machine, so as a habit, it is safer to setup the RPM dir in
~/ and build as user. Mandrake is very good about this, but occasionally you
get a 3rd party packager that forgets to set this and It's just a good habit.
and you can bork the system.
Two schools, an I'm in the other one ;) 'Sides the OP did cite
a Mandrake rpm. More important to me would be direct newbies to
always use Mandrake rpms, src.rpms included, to procure wanted apps
or dependencies. More over to disdain corrupting their systems with
anything 3rd party (includin drivers an apps, rpms or tarballs).
Build as user all you want, but if you install closed source binary
only taints on it, the precaution to only build rpms (or tarballs
for that matter) as user is sort'a moot, borderin on ridiculous.

   Another example;
 'rpm --rebuild --target athlon kdeutils-3.2.3-28.3.101mdk.src.rpm'
will compile the rpms, athlon optimized, and place them in
   /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/athlon/
This is cool, and might be fun to experiment to see if this has any effect on
your system.
IME, no. But when I ocaisionally do build from source, I
include athlon opts just for grins. Mostly kernels (as in
2.6.11-2mdkK74, compiled for athlon, preempt, 4gig ram support). I
used Mdk's kernel-source rpm an changed the .config, mostly to gain
preempt and support for 1gig of ram. An then only 'cause such a
kernel wasn't avaible from Mandrake, pre-compiled.

The src.rpm will build _all_ the rpms contained in the
src.rpm. So if you only want to upgrade only kdeutils rpms you
already have installed, cd to one of the above directories and use
Just one small point about your use of terminology in order to clarify, you
are compiling the source and building the rpm packages as they are specified
in the src.rpm's spec file, not releasing already built things packaged
together. It kind of sounds like they are being hatched instead of built the
way you described it :)
'hatched'? not sure what you mean Greg. The 'F' switch in
'rpm -Fvh' will only upgrade existing packages on the system, not
all packages included in the src.rpm. Good example would be 'xorg'
which would create more than a dozen packages, but only about 7 of
which are used on my system.

This is not DVD but I recall several years ago, asking a salesman about the

Since then I have bought only on price. A few coasters have turned up but I

However, the small problem I have is that as it is a closed secured network I
don't want any username and passwords? Is that possible??

Because one of the problems I have is any files created with one ID cannot be

Cheers, Elwyn
This all depends on how you set up the share. You can use the "force
user" and "force group" options when defining the share so that all
files will be owned by the same user/group. You may also want to set it
up so that guests can read, but not create/change/delete files.

Another way would be to set up security = share instead of user. It
isn't used as often, and I am not sure how well the GUI config tools
work with it, but it is something to look into.

I prefer to leave security set to user, and the force user option. That
way, you can still have private home shares for each user, but that is
just me...

freind here I think it'll be easier to stick to a "shared" user ID and
password.

[newbie] MySQL DB Connection to Open Office

2005-03-19 Thread SOTL
Hi All

Well I have ascertained that the principal reason that I am unable to connect
to a DB using OO is that Java is not installed in OO. Java is installed on
the computer but the OO-1.9 installation did not recognize this so now the
first issue is how does one install Java into OO.

Since there is a principal reason there must by necessity be as least one more
reason which I am sorry to say is another installation issue of software into
OO. It also appears that even though there are drivers for JDBC installed in
OO-1.1 which is also installed on this box that OO-1.9 does not recognize
these drivers existence so again the question is how does one go about
installing these drivers into OO.

The issue is not where to down load Java or the drivers or which Java and
drivers are needed but in how to install both Java and the JDBC drivers.

Would appreciate a little enlightnment of how one goes about making these
installations.

Thanks
Frank

I cranked up a new box on 10.1 just for nvu. Also couldn't install
it on 9.2. Works great on the new box, though.

BTW 10.1 is ok too.

Using Groups it's possible to sort that problem. Make sure that everyone is
in one group - either use User or create one for the purpose. Then, in
konqueror, go to the folder that represents the whole of the shared area. As
root, change the group to the chosen one and Set GID on the advanced
permissions page, then check Apply changes to all subdirectories and their
contents. That should work.

Be aware, though, that you no longer have any kind of control over who does
what, so anything you value should be copied there, not moved there.

[newbie] Samba Server

2005-03-19 Thread Elwyn
Hiya Folks

What I'd like to do is set up a shared area within our network that all our
(family) music files are on, plus other bits and bobs, that will only share
files for most of its hard drive.

I've already got a working Samba place on this machine but I'm debating how to
go about this.

Basically the box wil be without monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. Just have power
and network to it.

However, the small problem I have is that as it is a closed secured network I
don't want any username and passwords? Is that possible??

Because one of the problems I have is any files created with one ID cannot be
moved/deleted with another ID, or have I missed something fundemental out??

Cheers, Elwyn
