[17] Veron on captain

"My heart missed a beat when I was told I was being made captain. It is a big honour
for me and I hope my country was proud of my performance."

[16] Bobby Charlton on Argentina
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It's amazing that we see the way it should be played, yet not everyone else does. I
have spoken to Argentine people who think that to be cunning is to be applauded. A
good friend of mine from there once said 'What's wrong if you can get away with it?'
But that's not the way I think it should be played. I hate it when people dive,
because it isn't in our game. What happens sets the trend for years because children
copy what they see at the World Cup. We probably do have a few people who are falling
into their way of thinking, but I don't like it. And, even if we've had English
players saying they would go down in the area, actually doing it is something
different. The refs have said they will target anyone who tries to get other people
into trouble, by fouling or diving, and I hope they do."

[13] Veron on England
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
"The team showed heart but I still feel we have to improve on the Nigeria performance.
We were very nervous from the start for some reason, but maybe that was good because
it shows how much we care. We missed many chances and that is something we will have
to improve upon against England. I admire England as a team. They have physical
strength and they have fast players, which makes them a very rapid team. But I believe
we are together as a team and when Argentina play as we can, we are capable of beating
anyone at this World Cup."

"Yes, of course I know players in the England team. I know some of them very well
because they play for United. But this is a game our people back home would expect us
to win because playing and beating England is such an important thing for Argentina.
Everyone will now go on about me playing against England. But I'm not just playing
against England, I'm playing for my country, Argentina, and we will battle to win the
match."

"I was completely devastated at what happened. "I've known Roy for a long long time
and I always had the utmost respect for him as a player. People talked about my
bust-up with him in Saipan. I didn't have a bust-up with Roy. Press people just pulled
something out of a training ground incident, which didn't really exist. But I have to
say I lost a lot of respect for Roy as a person in that room with what he said. It
went against everything that I believe in regarding sport, life even. The morals that
I like to think I put across to my kids. Those were questioned. Respect for authority
was questioned. I feel sorry for Roy. I feel he has missed out on a wonderful
occasion. The facilities are incredible here. Sure, you have to put up with people
coming up for your autograph, with the passion of the Japanese people for soccer.
You've got to handle all that. It's just another side. Football isn't just about
walking on the pitch and playing the game. There's another dimension to it.!
And you've got to be able to handle that. All great sports people have got to be able
to handle that. I feel let down. I think the nation probably feels let down. I know
Mick feels let down that he couldn't have his best team here. But, above anything
else, I feel deep regret. Sadness. We have to move on though. Guys out here are role
models. And that has to apply on the pitch and off the pitch. You can't take a little
bit of it. It's all or nothing."

[8] Fergie on Ruud rest
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It won't do him any harm. He was out for a year and then had a full season with us.
He showed signs of tiredness towards the end and I''m hoping the rest he's got at the
moment will help him. He's on holiday now and will back probably towards the end of
June. We're going to put him on a programme of endurance and work and I think next
year he'll be a even better player. It was a fantastic first season. I thought he
would maybe show a sign of tiredness earlier but he came through fantastically and hit
a great bout of scoring in December through to January and February. But at the end of
March and April he started to show that sign of tiredness that I thought would happen."

"It wasn't the performance or the result required and probably everybody is
disappointed but we didn't lose the game and that is something we can take into the
next game.
"In the first half I thought there was only going to be one winner and we were going
to go on and score two or three goals, and the Swedes were there for the taking.
"Probably that's where we lost the game because we needed to score the second goal
before half time."

"It's not a quantity issue with us, it's a few quality players who will add to what we
have got and in some cases will be replacements.
"Ultimately we are looking for that magic blend which will make the team that gets us
winning the Premiership and hopefully, because of the added pressure on us holding the
Champions' League final at Old Trafford, making it a real spectacle we can all enjoy."

after the World Cup.

"I definitely think I can make the breakthrough. I've got one year left on my contract
and I want to stay for longer than that.

"If you look at the midfield players at United it's not easy, but I'm not going to
complain about it.

"I believe if I keep working hard the gaffer will always be fair to me because he's
very honest."

Posted Monday, June 3, 2002 by tb:
"We can't afford another 45 minutes like we had in the second half. We can't afford
again to sit back like we did.

"We gave Sweden too much space because they were just pumping the long ball right up
against us and that caused us problems which it shouldn't have done. We gave the ball
away too much, most definitely.

"That's one of the things all the lads talked about. We didn't keep the ball enough
and it has cost us. But we know that and we can learn from that."

"I was a little bit tired after being out for two months and coming into a game
especially in this humidity.

"My foot is aching a little bit but I don't think there will be a problem for the next
game.

"I eased off the pace in the last five to 10 minutes of the first half and I had a
couple of people ask me if I felt all right.

"I went out for the second half and just couldn't get going again. It is one of those
halves."
