--------------------------------- [18] Fergie on Tuesday's game --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: "It would be serious if we didn't get through, but it is not something I am contemplating. There's no special pressure after what happened last season. You can build something up and it becomes like a castle in the sky. We'll take it as it comes and some of our best performances last year were in Europe. The more success you have the bigger expectation becomes and I have to say I am not against that.. It's important that we don't lose a goal at home, an away goal is important and we should have scored in Hungary" --------------------------------- [17] Ridsdale threatened by Leeds fans --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: "I've never done a job where I've been insulted so much and it's hard to cope with. The letters I've had since Rio Ferdinand left have been appalling, threatening stuff that makes you wonder about people's psychological state. It shocks me that they can be so vitriolic towards me and it's a reminder of how passionate fans can be in a negative way. O'Leary's 'Leeds United on Trial' - stunned by its title and timing. It's wrong to say the book did not have an impact on the team's performance. We were top on January 1 and then we had an appalling two months. I don't see the need to write books when you are in a well-paid job." --------------------------------- [16] Sourness on Yorke --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: "I have had Dwight for six weeks and in that time he has been a pleasure to work with. He always has a smile on his face, which, in the circumstances, is fantastic because he has a lot to worry about at the moment. We have done wonderful business with Dwight. People look after themselves much more these days and I think that in the next three years we will see the best of both Yorke and Andy Cole. He enjoys his training and his football. It also helps that he and Andy are the best of mates. There is no jealousy between them. They get on brilliantly. Dwight had an excellent game." --------------------------------- [15] United bid turned down --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: >From the Guardian 'Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of reinforcing his Manchester United squad before Saturday's deadline received a significant setback last night when he learned that a £4m bid for the Argentinian defender Nicolas Burdisso had failed. Negotiations broke down with Boca Juniors because of their £7m asking price for the 21-year-old. Although United will instigate further talks, Boca's president Mauricio Macri, one of the wealthiest men in Argentina, has made it clear that his club are under no financial pressure to sell. He described the deal as "cold" and confirmed that United's chief executive Peter Kenyon had "not sounded very enthusiastic" when told of Burdisso's valuation. "If Manchester United propose a good offer I think the player will travel to England during the next few days," Macri added. "If the money is good, we will let Burdisso go." --------------------------------- [14] Phil Neville on tomorrow --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: "If we don't score, they will go through and that would be one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history. It is almost unthinkable for us not to get through but we can't afford to take anything for granted now. We are going out to try and eradicate our poor performance in Budapest. European competition has brought the best out of us in recent years, hopefully it will do so again. They will be full of confidence. They played out of their skins against us in Hungary. They defended very well and even though they didn't create too many chances, the goal at the end made all the difference. The Champions League is the best club competition there is and it would be disastrous if we weren't in it." --------------------------------- [13] NEW: 442 - Eric Cantona --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by redend: Cannot believe we missed this one before - Eric Cantona new biography from 442. Madrid have automatically qualified thanks to their success against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in last May's Hampden Park final and the 15 other automatic qualifiers did so on the basis of their performances in their domestic leagues. The remaining 16 places are allocated to the teams who have come through the qualifying rounds. The third qualifying round ties will be decided on the eve of the draw, with the second legs being played on 27 and 28 August. The 32 teams will be drawn into eight groups of four teams each, and the winners and runners-up in each group will advance. The final draw procedure has yet to confirmed.' --------------------------------- [9] Fergie on Chelsea --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: from the official site "Friday night's game at Chelsea was a fantastic game of football. I thought the pace and the commitment from both teams made it an engrossing game. I think that anyone who was at the game would know that they saw Manchester United playing very well. When we pulled it back to 1-1, I thought that we were starting to get back on top of the game, but then we lost a goal before half time which left us with a mountain to climb in a way, because it's difficult away from home. It was a bad time to lose a goal. In the second half we were fantastic, I thought it was absolutely brilliant stuff. There was great commitment from the lads, the speed of our passing and movement was outstanding - I was very pleased with them. I didn't see the penalty incident myself but everyone says it was a clear penalty. We're going to have to face these obstacles I'm afraid. You just have to try and find a way around them. I'm not surprised that John O'Shea got the man of the match award (from Sky TV). I'm delighted for him. We know that the future is very bright for the boy. He's improving all the time. I thought there were parts of the match when he was a bit uneasy - but that's because he's a kid, he's only 21 and he was playing against two of the best and most experienced centre-forwards in the game. As the game wore on he got better and better. Looking ahead to Tuesday's game against Zalaegerszeg, Rio Ferdinand is very close to making it. It would have been a big risk to play him on Friday night. I didn't think it was worth the risk so early in the season, but he will certainly be fit for next Saturday. As to the possibility of new players coming in, there's no news at the moment. We could maybe do something by Monday. We're very close to one or two things, but time is running out, so we're going to have to get our finger out." --------------------------------- [8] Escude talks delay --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: Rennes spokesman "The next thing that will happen is Monday. It should have been Sunday, but Manchester United had a problem in their programme. They have asked us to have a rendezvous on Monday in Paris." --------------------------------- [7] If we don't beat them after this... --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: result from Hungary MTK Budapest 3 - 0 Zalaegerszeg --------------------------------- [6] Phil Neville on ZTE mistake --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: "I should have dealt with the free-kick but I'm getting used to the criticism. I know the slightest thing I do will get highlighted and criticised but I'll ignore it and prove I'm worth my place on merit." --------------------------------- [5] Train statement --------------------------------- Posted Monday, August 26, 2002 by db: ASLEF STRIKES SET TO GO AHEAD The planned strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday 27 and 28 August, by ASLEF drivers, are set to go ahead.
