[nfc-l] Heron NFCs (Tricolored?)

2012-04-13 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi All,

This recording is from Rye, NY last May--a coastal saltmarsh. Sounds to me
like a heron, and Tricolored is my best guess (although it is rare in the
county). I've never had the pleasure of actually hearing a Tricolored Heron
call in flight, but based on a few recordings and text in Sibley that
describes their vocalizations as "Soft, nasal moaning; usually lacking
scratchy or rasping quality of most other herons and egrets," I think it's
the best bet.

I've attached both my recording and a spectrographic comparison of it with
the Tricolored Heron recording of the Stokes Guide (Eastern). Obviously in
the latter recording the bird is closer and the call is louder so more
detail is evident on the spectrogram, but I think it's a good match based
on overall shape and rhythm of the vocalizations.

If anyone agrees or disagrees, please let me know! And, on similar note,
has anyone compiled a comparison of heron/egret/bittern flight calls? I
have bits and pieces from here and there but I don't know of any one
resource like Evans & O'Brien.

Thanks,
Benjamin Van Doren

Re: [nfc-l] roll call!

David et al.-

I am listening (and sometimes recording) in Sand Lake MI, at least on big
nights where I am home. I have the 21c and use Audacity to capture the
recording.

RE: [nfc-l] roll call!

2012-04-13 Thread Soehren, Eric C.
We're new to this group and just started recording recently in Midway, Alabama
(southeast AL) at the Wehle Land Conservation Center. We are recording with
BeagleBoards (C5). We're using a Knowles mic (EK23029) through a custom
developed preamp into the BeagleBoard running Linux. Recording times are
automated and .wav files are stored on a 32GB USB drive. The audio files are
22050 samples per second, mono, .wav, and are a little under 2GB per night. We
process the recordings using Raven Pro and GlassOFire. The station is
automated needing manual intervention only every 15 days. Our mic is placed
atop a 40 foot pole, articulated for easy access, about 60 m from our office.

We noted good migrant movements in late March, but numbers have tapered
recently. We're still in the learning curve of identifying species through the
spectrograms and use Evans and O'Brien's Flight Calls of Migratory Birds as our
primary reference.

Subject: [nfc-l] roll call!

Can we get an update on where people are recording this spring? Is anyone
recording in Wisconsin or elsewhere in the Upper Midwest? We've had a number of
nights of moderate to heavy migration over the last two weeks and I'd be
interested to know how the night listening is going. I personally haven't been
out at night and my mic is still in a disassembled state since moving out here
at the end of December... I hope to get it up and running soon, but in the
meantime... is there anybody OUT there?

good listening!
