Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Replacing master cylinder sight glasses

2017-02-05 Thread Dwayne Wells
Hey Mike!

I kept this email because I knew it was only a matter of time before I ordered
them. I did the minimum order of 8. So if you would still like to have one, let
me know. I hope to pick them up on a weekend trip to the states in a couple of
weeks. Probably pretty easy for me to pop one in an envelope? And mail it to
you. Let me know.

If anyone else would like some, $5 a piece shipped. First come, first serve,
and I might keep 1-2 until I install mine, in case I have a mishap :P

Thanx,
Krunch

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Clutch recommendations

2017-02-05 Thread EGrider
Tommy, you can do as you like, but consider this. I started my wrenching
career by buying an XJ550 Yamaha in NC for $200. Once I finally got it to
run, I found out that the clutch slipped like crazy. The plates didn't look
bad, so I just put springs in it. It was fine and never slipped again.
Sold it that way. That's why, when the Magna started slipping, I bought
springs and bolts for it. Thing is, it only slipped in the winter. When the
weather warmed up, it was fine, even if I jumped on it. Well, I didn't ride
it so much in the winter, so I never got around to it. Sold it that way.

Also, you're going to be breaking the seal on the case. You can either buy
a gasket or make your own. I remember Allen recommending coating your cover
edges with oil, setting it on some bulk gasket material from the auto parts
store, and cutting out your own. Permatex also does the job, I've found. If
this is on a 700SC, Partzilla has it for like $4, so I guess it's a
non-issue.

Javier, remember how the clutch was slipping badly on Ol' Yeller? My buddy
Jim up in Maine looked at it and decided the cable needed more slack. Two
minutes later, it was fixed and has never slipped again.

[Nighthawk Lovers] '83 CB550SC Top End Rebuild

2017-02-05 Thread Joe
This is a report on my successful top end rebuild. This work included the
carburetors and top end. My intent is to help others who are considering
doing this. Be aware that this is relatively easy, and you can do it.

1. In order to get the carburetors off and back on, I removed the right
shock so I could get the plastic fender out so I could slide the airbox
back. I think it is worth the trouble to do this. I put a long clamp from
the bottom of the shock to the frame so I take the tension off the shock.
Then I could remove it.

2. I found the cam chain tensioner to be particularly onerous. It took me a
long time to figure out how it works and how to relieve the tension. It was
hard to get back in too.

3. I was constantly afraid I would drop something down in the crankcase. Be
careful.

4. Rebuilding the carburetors was no problem.

5. It's hard to understand how the tappets work, and how to clean them, but
if you just follow instructions from youtube, it will come clear.

6. You will need help lowering the cylinders over the pistons because they
are heavy, but you don't need ring compressors, they will go in the
cylinders if you are careful. A block of wood to keep the piston from going
down, as shown in the Clymer, works well.

That's the main issues, if I think of anything else I will add it.

Joe

2017-02-05 Thread Tommy Hill
I love you, bro, but if you can't pass a driving test, I would prefer to not
share the road with you. Personal experience, my bro-in-law was nearly killed
by a man whose only issue was just too old to be driving. He had been in 2-3
accidents in the past year or so.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Check out this Nighthawk

2017-02-05 Thread Javier Garcia
It made me a little sad that the guy can't pass the safety test because he
is too old. They should let him ride regardless... what's the worse it can
happen? let him have some fun!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Clutch recommendations

2017-02-05 Thread Javier Garcia
As others said, sounds like a slipping clutch. That means you need new
plates and springs. On the 750 you will need a special head to remove the
main nut. Allen used to have a sort of how-to for making your own head plus
replacing the plates. I know he posted a thread about it so you should be
able to find it.
