+1 on the parts bike. Motor builds cost way too much. Unless it is a keep
until you die bike, then cost isn't an issue.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Fix/replace/ or sell?

2015-05-11 Thread James O'Gorman
I have an 83 650 that I got from the wife's uncle (who got at a Detroit
police auction). I fixed it up and got about 1.5 seasons but then it
developed what I think is a rod knock.

It also has the usual cam chain noise, plus a noisy 5th gear (hums) and a
split oil passage where the oil pipe feeds into the head. I've tried fixing
the latter but with no luck.

Given these issues...

...the question is - should I fix it or sell it?

I don't see any decent engines for the 83-85 on eBay - just this one which
may be sketchy:

I'm outside Milwaukee, WI.

I've rebuild car engines before; top and bottom end, but not motorcycle. I
should already have most the tools needed - ring spring compressors,
torque wrenches, etc.
I think at this point I would rather get a replacement engine/trans or a
parts bike rather than rebuild this one.

Thoughts?
