I am sorry, I goofed.

It is M-p (notmuch-show-previous-thread-show) and M-n
(notmuch-show-next-thread-show)

As far as I can tell it comes mapped to those keys.

Is there a way to have all searches use tree mode by default? I know I can set 
this as part of each individual search, but it would save typing if there were 
a setting to make this the default.

I don't think that exists as a current option.

You can use the space bar to advance to the next thread.
