Really? I've tried

XXX\hbox{}XXX
\stoptext

But I can't see any space...

Oh, excuse me very much: all my problems arose just because I had lost my
good old cont-sys.tex during my last update...
With \enablemode[activecolon] and \usemodule[tryout] all seems fine.
In fact, you've already resolved this problem for me last year in May...
Only one little workaround is still needed, as described in
http://contextgarden.net/No_space_before_punctuation

Thanks, Peter

[NTG-context] Cannot open font map file

2005-03-14 Thread Albrecht Kauffmann
Hi all,

after installing the latest alpha together with pdftex 1.21 under Linux
I've got troubles with font mapping. My test file is:

\setupoutput[pdftex]
\setupalign[hanging]
\setupfontsynonym [Serif] [handling=pure]
\setupfontsynonym [Sans] [handling=pure]
\setupfontsynonym [Mono] [handling=punctuation]
\usetypescript [all] [latin-modern] [texnansi]
\setupbodyfont[reset]
\setupbodyfont[cmr,12pt]
\showfont[Serif]
\setuppapersize [A4][A4]
\starttext

blabla

\stoptext

pdfeTeX does not find the map files, how the following log-file confirms.

Has anyone a hint in order to repair the system?

With many thanks in advance
Albrecht

[NTG-context] Re: Helvetica!

2005-03-14 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

somehow your 8r-base.map doesn't get read. I wonder why. If you use

\setupencoding[default=ec]

it should work ok. But: check your cont-sys.tex and update it
according to cont-sys.ori. There is a statement like:

\loadmapfile[8r-base.map]

That should be in there for correct mapfile handling. After that, your
file should run OK. See the output from your logfile:

fonts : using map file: original-base
fonts : using map file: ec-public-lm
fonts : using map file: ec-base
...

There is no 8r-base.

[NTG-context] pdfopen/pdfclose under Linux

2005-03-14 Thread Taco Hoekwater
Hi all,
I've just uploaded a beta version of Fabrice Popineau's pdfclose/
pdfopen tools ported to X11 (Linux).
I've tested this with Acrobat Reader 5.0.10 & Linux & X.org, but the
code is reasonably generic, I believe. I hope that while waiting for
the upcoming direct texexec support, somebody is willing to do testing
under other AR/Os/X configurations.
You can fetch it from:
  http://tex.aanhet.net/utils/pdfopen-0.2.tar.gz
(Mandrake 10.1/i386 binaries are included)
From the README:
---
Both commands have only one meaningful argument:
  pdfclose --file
Closes an existing window with the name
  pdfopen --file
Opens a window with the name (starting a reader if
necesary), or it reloads if it was already open.
Note: is the name of the X window, not a filename.

I understand that, but for someone new to ConTeXt, the behaviour of
\whatever after a \definewhatever is unexpected. Especially so if one is
used to LaTeX.

The same is true for the non-implied start of a new column in \startable
after a new row has been declared.

My experience so far with ConTeXt is that it is probably possible to do
all the things I want to do (though I still have a couple of open issues,
see other posts) and I still have the feeling it is very powerful (I
already had that when I first read the manual years ago). But the error
messages I get or the behaviour I see when I make my beginner mistakes are
less illuminating than the LaTeX parts and the behaviour is also not
always friendly (e.g. the \NC needed after a new row in \starttable) or
intuitive or the same across diffferent parts of ConTeXt (\startitemize
versus \startwhatever). And it sometimes very difficult to find
documentation (directory structure, \starttable).

It did work, but I wasn't able to find align=justified in texshow-web.
I have added it to texshow-web.

Thanks,
 Patrick

Then you should ask fedora about the local guide. They know where
they've put it.

I have one in texlive/2004/texmf-doc/doc/english/texlive-en/live.html
and texlive/2004/texmf-doc/doc/english/texlive-en/live.pdf.

OK, it looks as if you have problems with mapfiles:

Perhaps Gerben knows what is going on here. What is the output of the
shell command:

grep phvr8r `kpsewhich pdftex.map`

Hello Hans,

[some nice location= in \framed trickery]

Yeah, that rocks!

Hello *,
inspired by Gerben's question, I did some experimenting with \framed.
I'd like to get A[text]B, where text is some long thing in a framed
box like \framed[width=5cm] {\input tufte \par}.
There are three different ways of aligning the three objects:
(A and B on the same baseline as the first row)
A We thrive in information- B

A the sheeps from the goats. B

I was unable to get any of these alignments.
the other way is to use the following extensions (i made the dislocator
installable so that you can hook in your own code if needed)

\unprotect
\def\stoplocalframed

Everything works perfectly until the depth is greater then strut depth
(still no real depth measurements):

\starttext
a
\framed[location=bottom]
 {location=bottom
  \ruledhbox
  {A
   \framed[width=2cm,align=middle,location=bottom]
{location\\equals\\bottom}
   \framed[width=2cm,align=middle,location=top]{location\\equals\\top}
   \framed[width=2cm,align=middle,location=lohi]   {location\\equals\\lohi}
   B}
 }
b

\stoptext

read-only; then adapt themselves, so there is no need to store their
values; can even be dangerous since they may change odd/even
Ok, that's right, many thanks.

Apart from adapting, the \startitemize \stopitemize does not require me

That's because it's a different construct (less variants in visualization and
such);
