Antwort: Re: [NTG-context] Update to the newest ConTeXt version

2005-07-27 Thread Jessica Holle

Hi,

I've done everything you told me and like its written in the howto.

But look at the output. I think its a fontproblem so I tried to make
this command:

texmfstart texfont.pl type-tmf.dat --en=texnansi
--fontroot=/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf --install --makepath

But this doesn't help, I get always an error.

Has anybody an advise for me?

Greetings Jessica

The font ec-lmr12 is part of the cont-lmt zip package; there
should be no need to run texfont, assuming you installed the
package and your search paths are ok.

There is a strong hint that something went wrong during upgrade,
because, had you performed all steps in the wiki page, there would
not even exist a program called mktextfm in /usr/sbin.

Therefore, something definately is not right yet. Please follow
the directions precisely if you want the upgrade to succeed

Hello!

This time I have a task like this:

I have margin text blocks (like Note, Tip) that follow some paragraph
in my document flow.
In the produced document I get them in margin, but vertically they are
just below the paragraph (as in text flow)
I really need then to start exactly where the previous paragraph
starts (vertically). I.e. I need to move them several (unknown number)
lines higher.

My realization:

\setupinmargin[style=\sl\tx\setupinterlinespace,location=left,align=right]
\def\Note#1{
  \strut
  \inmargin{
\em{#1}
  }
  \strut}
\starttext

This is the para with unknown length that can be any number of lines
high. And I have a note below it that should be located to the left of
this paragraph and not just below it. That's the case. \par

\Note{ And here is the note that should be in margin.}

\stoptext

The easiest would to put it above the target paragraph, but that's not
the solution for me as the same text is rendered to HTML where no
margins exist.

Can I do it plainly in tex code?

well, you need to know a bit of tex an dcontext internals -)

it takes some 10 lines of code to hack a solution that moves the margin note to
the beginning of a paragraph (ok, page crossing are a problem, so there it
stays in place)

however, the note should be attached to the par! so:

text text\inmargin{...}

(i suppose that for html you can insert a break before the note)

as usual the problem is, how to integrate this

(btw, context does have mechanisms for auto-stacking marginal notes that clash, which is why this not too complex to implement; we needed that functionality a few years ago for a huge xml-pdf project)

(This came up on comp.text.tex in a question about LaTeX, but it also

Consider the following document:

  \starttext
Some ligature tests: ff, fi, ffi, fl, ffl.
  \stoptext

If I process that with texexex -pdf, load it into Acrobat 5, and then
copy-and-paste the text from the PDF into a text editor, the fi and fl
ligatures are correctly treated as two letters, but the ff, ffi, and ffl
ligatures are treated as single (unknown) characters. Similarly,
searching for f within the document only finds the fi and fl
ligatures; it doesn't find the others. Searching for ff finds nothing.

This is a fairly significant problem in the on-screen usability of
ConTeXt-created documents.

In LaTeX, there is apparently a solution in the cmap.sty package (though
it currently only works for T1 encoding):

  http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/cmap/

Is there a similar solution for ConTeXt? (Has this perhaps been solved
with a later version of ConTeXt than I have on my computer?)

Yes, but IFAIK only for one or two encodings (CMAP files). I have to
remember ... the keyword is \usepdffontresource. See source enco-pfr.tex

I think I'm a little bit stupid this week

I've done everythink like on this site :
http://contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation

I've only a softlink to texhash in /usr/sbin looks like:
texhash - /usr/local/teTeX/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu/texhash

and a softlink to texmfstart
texmfstart -
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/scripts/context/ruby/texmfstart.rb

and a softliink to
mktexlsr - /usr/local/teTeX/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu/mktexlsr
because when I'm doing fmtutil-sys --edit like in the doku
explained, this was expected.

The scripts in the folders
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/scripts/context/ruby
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/scripts/context/perl
are executable

Because of this output I've thought mktextfm must have an sl to
/usr/sbin
Now I've canceled all softlinks in /usr/sbin
except the sl's I've said up in my mail and the kpse*

I'm perfectly glad to test this, but I'm not at all sure how to use it.
What do I need to do to use it?

Thanks!

The reason for this request is that we use ConTeXt a lot for
typesetting books from arts and humanities.

There we often have to place a lot of (more then 100) figures at
fixed positions like top-outer and bottom-inner, wrapped by text.

I guess it's not a trivial feature to be implemented in TeX's
paragraph processing, but I know it might be worth the effort:
ConTeXt's way to deal with fonts and text is so superior that it
should be also accessible for disciplines that besides text also rely
on images - as the arts and humanities do.

not trivial indeed, although it is more or less doable when you
accept some limitations, e.g. if you have only text and graphics,
use a grid, and have no other tricky stuff that can interfere
(display math or so)

  ok, agreed!

But figure labels are needed (do they interfere?)

figure labels are part of the float

 Hans

so, if it's more or less doable ... there is at least hope that we
can expect this feature in the next time, right?

it's hard to check with compressed files, but:

\pdfcompresslevel=0

 \usepdffontresource ec

\usetypescript[palatino][ec] \setupbodyfont[palatino]

seems to work here; i'll add the file and definition to the distribution

you need ec variants:

[NTG-context] Insufficient symbol fonts

2005-07-27 Thread Eckhart Guthöhrlein
Hi,

preparing a presentation, I am into errors like

! Math formula deleted: Insufficient symbol fonts.
l.67\symbol[psi]\low{\tfx{\it i\/}+1} $-$
 120,

again and again.
Admittedly, my font knowledge is probably the worst of my tex skills.

Is there a way to increase the number of available symbol fonts? A quick
hack would do, since I am kind of under pressure...

Thanks,

Hi Eckhart,

TeX cannot find the math fonts that are defined by the presentation
style. There should be another error before this one, complaining
about missing font metrics.

The easiest fix is probably to make the presentation use
computer modern for math typesetting (?)

In the output of 'texexec x log 21', there is nothing about metrics.
The only messages concerning fonts are:

bodyfont: 12pt rm is loaded
...
fonts : resetting map file list
fonts : using map file: original-base
fonts : using map file: ec-public-lm

It does use cm, as far as I can see. I frequently use the \text command
to get sans serif, since I don't have time and energy to figure out how
to switch the default math fonts. (Ugly, I know...)

Commands relevant to font setup in my environment:

\setupbodyfont[17.28pt,sans]

Nothing special, I think.
Then I have some definitions like

\definesymbol[alpha][\getglyph{cmmi10}{11}]
\definesymbol[beta][\getglyph{cmmi10}{12}]

because I intended to take these from a different (upright version) font
in the future. Can this be the problem?

[NTG-context] Figure / table caption format

Hi,

I've been looking into the various ConTeXt resources to figure out how to
place a colon between the figure number and the caption text within the

Figure 1: This is a figure caption

Unfortunately I have not yet found it and am wondering if anyone can provide
a clue as to how this is accomplished. Also, how can I left justify the
caption text within the document as follows:

Figure 1: This is a figure caption
that is too long to fit on

Any help is appreciated ...
