i see no real problem why they cannot coexist if only because luatex
will end up in tex live sooner or later

it't just that the current tex live does not ship with all the fonts
that we want to use in luatex

also, mkiv is not depending on anything in tex live, it uses files in
the base context tex path plus a few scripts (luatools and mtxrun)

the problems that you run into have to do with the fact that mkiv needs
a cache path for saving info (e.g. about fonts) and setting this up
right needs some experimentation and feedback from users; each
distribution and tex system is different it seems

Recent version of fontforge(20070723) can read DejaVuSans.ttf without
any trouble. I also tried to tranform it to *.otf using fontforge - no
problem. Older version(200703??) worked too.

[NTG-context] mkiv

2007-08-13 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,

Currently most mails on the list about mkiv and luatex concern
installation and fonts. This is ok since quite some code is related to
that. The next couple of months other (sub)systems will be activated (or
discovered by users since quite some stuff is already there).

- reading from other media: reading from zip files is possible, reading
from e.g. http also if you have curl installed

- color support: mkiv will use attributes; this works already on my
machine; other features (outline) and such will follow this route

- spacing, vertical as well as horizontal (inter character spacing,
french punctuation), it's there but needs integration

- indexing: is already using lua, needs to be tested and we need tables
for languages

- numbering lines etc: work in progress

- verbatim: new pretty printers will show up (i expect users to step in
once we have the api ready)

- synchronization of text streams, multiple text streams etc ... work in
progress

- sectioning and list handling, needs some rework for mkii too

- debugging and error handling: there (try \showdebuginfo \page or maybe
\overloaderror \crap); we need a way to refresh browser windows
automatically

- runtime feature toggling and font extensions: work in progress

- etc etc

maybe we should set up a wiki page where users can make a wishlist for
fundamental features cq. exploring features under construction

[NTG-context] Problem with XML entities in titles

2007-08-13 Thread Richard Gabriel
Hello Hans,

I'd like to report a problem (bug) with XML entities in chapter or section

I've just upgraded to the recent ConTeXt version (2007.08.09) and started to
get errors while processing the .tuo file.

Please test the attached minimal example.
During the second TeX run, I get the following error:

Till today, I have been using ConTeXt version 2007.04.17 and it had worked fine!

Thanks,

How about the support for Chinese ? Will it be enhanced or just remains the

And can mkiv produce pdf files in which the Chinese characters can be selected

Why is this? Cannot mkiv and texlive coexist in the same tree? I
certainly hope that is not true, it would certainly make me refrain
 from using mkiv!
ok,I say this: actually it's not safe for me to mix texlive and luatex.
I don't know how to fix this now, so I prefear two separate trees ,
so at least I can play with luatex with no problems with texlive.

AFAIU, this is ok. luac is a file for compiling lua code into byte

than that, everything will be fine.

I have had the same problem on windows. texexec --luatex test will
create a spurious cache directory and then proceed to search it:

1. Check to see if it works from the scite script cscite in unix
(cscite.bat on windows).

2. If you can run luatex from scite then just save the scite script to a
different name and edit it to launch your application (editor or shell).

This is how I got mkiv to work on windows.

No problems with plain:
luatex --ini plain \\dump
ln -s plain.fmt luatex.fmt
luatex --output-format=pdf test

This is test.tex:

[NTG-context] luatools error message

2007-08-13 Thread Hans van der Meer

On luatools --generate I get this error message:

8380572d1d594c806eb224cb2d00c228.tma:20: unfinished string near ''Icon'

This could be caused by the fact that my system (Macintosh OSX) here
and there files with the name Icon? (the ? is part of the name) are
sprinkled.
I suspect the unfinished string is triggered by the trailing
questionmark
Is it harmful? Can this be prevented, acting on the maxim: silence

I have had the same problem on windows. texexec --luatex test will
create a spurious cache directory and then proceed to search it:

 1. Check to see if it works from the scite script cscite in unix

So you don't have a maximal distribution then...

 2. If you can run luatex from scite then just save the scite script to a
different name and edit it to launch your application (editor or shell).

No, I use emacs and bash...

 - If yes, how do I generate it, since format-generation produces only

Are you sure there is not another cache directory created? What happens
here:

1. a cache is created by luatex

2. when I run texmfstart texexec file a secondary cache is created and
then I get the exect same error messages that you get.

When I start an application using cscite.bat or a derivative of it,
everything works fine. cscite.bat initializes scite using setuptex.bat (or
just setuptex under unix).

So try to get a distributution with Scite and the initialition script.
Then, if scite works properly, you can edit the initialization script to
start whatever you like (emacs, bash, etc., notepad++ in my case).

Best wishes

[NTG-context] Handling Docbook files

2007-08-13 Thread John R. Culleton
I am trying to run a bunch of docbook files related to Krita. The
convention in these files seems to be to prefix subordinate file

texexec index.docbook
it blows up on the first such ampersand. I can of course edit all the
files to replace with \ but I wonder if there is a better
strategy?

I also tried the various docbook2xxx style utilities but they all
failed to produce meaningful results.

All I want to do is read the #$% files!

AFAIU XML, having a lone in the file is not valid. You need to
have amp; if you want ampersand. Any other entity (something;)
should be appropriately defined by some style file.

I also tried the various docbook2xxx style utilities but they all
 failed to produce meaningful results.

Is it a valid xml file? Is it a valid docbook file? Do the utilities
work with simple sample files.

All I want to do is read the #$% files!

Did you try db2latex? It comes with db2context which handles a large
subset of docbook specifications.
