And I find that acrobat 8 and 9 running under linux or linux emulation
(freebsd) have serious memory leaks, and sometimes fork leaving
rogue shadows running in the background... but I have not spent enough
time investigating this to fully understand.

Given our interest in pdf production, perhaps we ought to be (more)
involved in opensource pdf viewer development? But I suppose that
acrobat and adobe reader remain the tools having the most widespread
use.

[NTG-context] \startitemize[columns] once again...

2012-11-09 Thread Marcin Borkowski
This minimal example behaves in a strange way:

\starttext
  Some text
  \startitemize[columns,two,joinedup]
  \item abc% $\frac{x^2-x+3}{x^2+x-3}$;
  \item xyz% $\frac{x^5-3}{x^3+x-2}$.
  \stopitemize
\stoptext

If we remove the percentage signs in the items, an additional vertical
skip appears. Is it a feature or a bug?

(Also, I encountered a *very* weird error where in some cases a whole
page disappears in the pdf; I could not distil it into a minimal
example, but I'll try and I'll post it here. I have a very vague
suspicion that \startitemize[columns] is again the culprit.)

TIA,

Got it. Sadly, recent versions of Acrobat do not (currently) run on
Linux and there are problems running it via WINE. I do have a legal copy
of Acrobat 8 around here. Perhaps that will work.

Adobe stopped supporting Linux after Acrobat 9 :(

After I had upgraded to windows 8 and was reinstalling acrobat reader I
found out that there was a new version. (With previous versions I was
participating in the beta test program. And normally Martin announces
new acrobats so maybe the new version has a very low profile.)

Unfortunately the pdfopen program cannot handle acrobat reader xi (but I
use full acrobat x so it's no big deal).

As far as I can see, the reader does not support showing tags (which is
weird as it's part of accessibility).

[NTG-context] Presets in collectors

2012-11-09 Thread Marco Patzer
Hi!

Is there a reason that presets don't work with collectors?
Collectors are based on layers and that's what presets are made for,
right? Bug or feature?

  \definecollector
[mycollector]
[width=\textwidth]

  \setcollector
[mycollector]
{\framed[width=5cm,height=2cm]{Foo}}

  \setcollector
[mycollector]
[preset=rightbottom]%% not recognized
%% [corner={right, bottom}, %% works
%%  location={left, top}]
{\framed{Bar}}

  \flushcollector [mycollector]
  \starttext\null\stoptext

Is this a good description of the command's behavior?

All structure heads, regardless of level, get a location number in the
order in which they appear. Like so (see also MWE at bottom of this
e-mail):

\section{Alpha}
 % location number: 1; type: section; section number: 1
\section{Beta}
 % location number: 2; type: section; section number: 2

\subsection{Noot}
 % location number: 4; type: subsection; subsection number: 2
\section{Gamma}
 % location number: 5; type: section; section number: 3

\namedstructureheadlocation{X} then returns the location number of the
current X, where X is the name of a structure level (e.g. 'chapter',
'section', etc.)

If you ask for e.g. \namedstructureheadlocation{chapter}, and you are
not in a chapter, then 0 is returned.

Anything missing?

a location number is some kind of unique internal reference, a pretty
old feature btw, dating from the early days of context, when complex
interactivity was added, but it comes in handy here

taken the lazy liberty of redirecting

Uh...well the situation is the following
1) I'm using ubuntu 12.04 lts 32 bit
2) I don't use tex* from ubuntu
3) I manually install the latest mkiv in /opt/luatex/context-standalone

You have a more-than-a-month-old mkiv, which currently means "unsupported".

I have updated using ConTeXt Standalone.

It works nicely with the last stable version (sh ./first-setup.sh
--context=current) but if I update to last unstable version (sh
./first-setup.sh) I have another error with the \page command...

By the way with the stable version everything seems to work !

Maybe the reference "Long Long Long" could break into two lnes or a rule like
that?

play with

  \index{Long Long Long}blub

and

  blub\index{Long Long Long}

an index entry (currently) inserts a node in the list and that one should be

The problem is not the \index command but the text in the register, as you can
see in the example below the text and the page number are in separate columns
(or in the long example on separate pages).

\setuppapersize[A6]

\starttext

\index{Too long entry}Long index entry.

This is caused by this macro in strc-reg.mkiv where you insert only a normal
skip
between the the text and page number, changing \hskip to \nobreak\hskip moves
at least a part of the last word in the entry to the next column in the example
above.

The problem is not the \index command but the text in the register, as you can
see in the example below the text and the page number are in separate columns
(or in the long example on separate pages).

\setuppapersize[A6]

\starttext

\index{Too long entry}Long index entry.

\blank

\placeindex

\stoptext

This is caused by this macro in strc-reg.mkiv where you insert only a normal
skip
between the the text and page number, changing \hskip to \nobreak\hskip moves
at least a part of the last word in the entry to the next column in the example
above.

\unexpanded\def\registerpageseparator% todo: , configurable
  {\ifconditional\c_strc_registers_page_done
 \registerpageseparatorsymbol
   \else
 \hskip\d_strc_registers_distance\relax
 \settrue\c_strc_registers_page_done
   \fi}

play with

an index entry (currently) inserts a node in the list and that one

Can you test the font with a complete minimal example like this (you can
replace the Ubuntu font with DIN).

\usemodule[simplefonts]

\setsansfont[Ubuntu]

\setupbodyfont[ss]

\starttext

\input ward

\startformula
c^2 = a^2 + b^2
\stopformula

\startitemize
\startitem Item 1 \stopitem
\startitem Item 2 \stopitem
\startitem Item 3 \stopitem
\stopitemize

\stoptext

Are “DIN-Black0”, “DIN-Bold0” etc. the file names for the font, in this case
simplefonts
isn’t able to find them because the search pattern don’t look for such names.

See

Also
\startchapter[title=mytitle1]
...
\stopchapter
Foo
\startchapter[title=mytitle2]

\stopchapter

\chapter{mytitle1}

Of course
\startchapter[title=mytitle1]
...
Foo
\stopchapter%
\startchapter[title=mytitle2]

\stopchapter

is equivalent to
\chapter{mytitle1}
...

So  \start  \stop  can emulate \
