[NTG-context] Different characters in two fonts

2010-04-05 Thread Mehdi Omidali

Hi all,
When I use $\cong$, two different characters are displayed with Latin
Modern Math and Cambria. In fact, the one for Cambria is the correct
one. Is this a problem of Latin Modern font (itself or context settings)?

Thanks, but your output is not the same as mine. The comment by
Equation 2 must be right aligned exactly where formula number is. Also
I don't like manual alignment like \quad. AMS-TEX provide commands for
automatic alignment. It would be nice if context supports that too.

This code for example
\startformula

\startmathalignment[m=2,distance=4em]

\NC\NC=w^2\NC\NC\text{(By Theorem BlaBla)}\NR

Is this the best way?

Apparently tikz is not able to handle these font styles as you can see

 - There's nothing wrong with just overwriting the existing files with
files extracted from PRAGMA; first-setup.sh doesn't do much more than
 that.
 - The luatools --selfupdate and mtxrun --selfupdate are not supposed
to be FAQ items, but they are rather a flaw that should be fixed in
 distribution itself

 To Mehdi:
luatools --selfupdate
mtxrun --selfupdate
luatools --generate
context --make en

If you ask me -- none of the first three commands should be needed,
but then I'm the one to blame for the first two and for the reason why
 these are not fixed yet.

Re: [NTG-context] Sample farsi file

2009-01-09 Thread Mehdi Omidali
In Luatex one can define font for math equations. So it is possible to have
persian numerals in math formulas. But for Jalali calendar we have to write
a macro (maybe Idris has done this). Font handling: currently luatex can not
handle IranNastliq font but other fonts are ok. About footnote rule:
\pagedir TRT makes everithing from right to left so the footnoterule is in
the right position; but for an automatic footnoterule I will do that via lua
in the future. Now I am very busy with the translation of context an
excursion and the persian interface.
The module is the one that I am using for the translation of Context an
excursion and it is suitable thought not complete.

 1) numbers in maths formula is Persian, possible?

 2) is it hard to write a converter?

 4) there are two footnote commands. one for persian and one for english.
persian footnotes will be on left and persian footnotes on right. also if
the first footnote in a page is persian, footnote rule is on the right and
if first footnote is english, footnote rule is on left.

 who is idris?

The font is mentioned in the wiki page

so it could be a regression in the latest luatex. I cannot
test myself because the font download link is broken...

you need to adapt mult-con and mult-com but at the same time we need to
adapt mult-sys, so as an experiment if things work out ok, just play a
bit with mult-con/com e.g. replace a few harmless commands in the
english interface and see if things work ok for persian

 footnote: voetnoot footnote
fussnote poznamkapodcarou
notapdp notasubsol
notepdp

eventually persian can become the 8th entry

 footnote: voetnoot somethingpersian
fussnote poznamkapodcarou
notapdp notasubsol
notepdp

\somethingpersian then should give you a footnote

(we never really tested it with utf8 input so far)

(when i have time i will (for luatex) make this mechanism different i.e.
just lua tables from which i then can generate the con/com files)
Hi Hans and everybody,
I did as you said and saw two things.
1- The good news: it is possible to assign another name (even persian)
for an option name. For example the word packed which is used as an
option in some commands like \setupitemize works well if you
substitute it with anything.
2- The bad news: names of commands (I mean words that is used in the
input file with a backslash in front of them like footnote or
setupsomething) are not well behaved if we change them in
mult.con.tex. I tried to change for example the word footnote with a
persian word with more than one character and in the running time I
got the error that that command is not defined. But I was able to
redefine footnote with a just one (persian) character.

[NTG-context] Arabic script bug in MKIV

2008-10-17 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi everyone
At last I could install minimal context to use the latest luatex
(0.30.1) with latest cont-tmf release. Thanks.
I don't know if the following is a luatex or Context bug. Sorry if
here is not the right place to report this.
After compiling the following lines I faced two problems in the output.
1- In the first line words get mixed.
2- In the second line only 456 appeared but it should be 0123456789.
The second problem occurs for the specific font that I have used and I
can resolve it by using another font. The problem is that in the font,
the character ۱ for example is assigned to two unicode characters, one
for U+0661 (arabic digit one) and also for U+06F1 (farsi digit one).
But MKIV doesn't know this approach. In fact, only digits 4,5, and 6
are different in farsi and arabic so they appeared in the output
correctly. XeTeX knows this kind of character assignment.

The font can be downloaded from
http://irmug.org/portal/index.php?name=Downloadsreq=getitlid=48

Thanks.

This command doesn't necessary do what you always desire: it puts
ConTeXt to texmf-local. This means that any further updates that you
might try to make with tlmgr (TeX Live manager) will be shielded by
your local copy. That's OK, but you need to be aware that you then
have two copies of ConTeXt on your computer, and the one in
 texmf-local will be used.

And there is something that might bite you with this as well. TeX Live
is currently configured so that luatools mtxrun binaries are taken
from texmf-dist/scripts. If the rest of files comes from texmf-local,
you might end in troubles/incompatibilities between the two versions.
You probably need to fix symlinks of luatools and mtxrun manually.

 luatools --generate
 everything went smooth. But after

You need to update LuaTeX binary as well. See
 http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_Mark_IV. But there are still
some issues. Namely, you need to fix symlinks of luatools and mtxrun
to point to the proper file. And you might need to remove files in
texmf-local that belong to ConTeXt as a result of ctxtools
--updatecontext (it's up to you which tree you want to use; I
overwrite files in texmf-dist with some care).

[NTG-context] Formula number in right2left direction

2008-09-03 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi,
There is a problem in formula numbers in RL direction. I mean in a formula the
direction of the number of formula is from left to right. I tried \mathdir TRT
and this problem disappeared but two new problems appeared. First, the hole
formula typesetted from right to left which shouldn't be. Second, the prantesis
arround the formula number get reversed like )a.b(. It would be nice if \mathdir
TRT only changes the direction of the formula number (with correct prantesis)
not hole the formula.

Thank you Khaled.
As you said we don't need \textdir in Xetex and I can use \pardir TRT
in this situation. I thought that maybe there is a simple setup for
sectioning number in context that I am not aware of. Any way, I have
translated The not so short introduction to latex to farsi and also
I am translating Context an excursion (due to a number of problems,
somebody told me to use context+xetex for this purpose but now it
seems that I have to complete the translation with luatex) and as you
probably know luatex has a problem with \placeformula in TRT mode (I
don't know if this problem has been resolved).
Thank again.

\pardir \textdir etc. are LuaTeX specific, it seems that CpnTeXt
emulates \textdir TRT for XeTeX/e-TeX, dunno how to set par direction to
RTL in XeTeX though, may be ConTeXt should emulate \pardir as well or
may be there is some way to do this that I'm not aware of.

Sorry I got confused, \pardir is what we have, actually you don't need
\textdir with XeTeX since it will render individual Arabic words from
right to left correctly and automatically.

The account on the garden is different from SVN access. See
 http://foundry.supelec.fr/scm/?group_id=22

To get the files you don't need the account. You need the account in
order to commit changes. Do you have SVN installed? On windows it's
best to install TortoiseSVN and right-lick on check out, on linux
you should be able to run:
 svn checkout http://scm.foundry.supelec.fr/svn/contextman

You can browse the files on

Re: [NTG-context] Passing unicode characters

2008-07-27 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi everyone,
Another thing that have to be fixed is about formula numbering in
right-to-left texts. By default I think lua prints a formula number in
a formula in the wrong direction, like
\thechapter.\thesection.\theequation
but it should be
\theequation.\thesection.\thechapter
because chapter and section numbering is expanded from right to left.
Also be aware of equation numbers when one call it from a reference
like \in[formulalabel].
It should also be
\theequation.\thesection.\thechapter
As far as I know, equation nembering is a big problem in all tex
engines (for right-to-left texts).
Fortunately, the way that lua act with other numbered bodies, like
tables, figures, ... (in right-to-left texts) is perfect as far as I
have checked.
Best wishes.

I think this is a bug in converters.alphabetic function, it doesn't

Can you try it out and report? I didn't try it out (no idea how to
work with Arabic), but I consider it a much cleaner approach than
 redefining characters in fonts.

(You could also use \setupformulas[conversion=arabicnumerals], similar
for tables, ..., but in theory you should not need anything else but
 \defineconversion [ar] [numbers] [\arabicnumerals] in lang-ara.tex if
 that's of general interest.)

 (most of the people even
prefer persian digits in formulas which is possible in xetex).
As you know, the Mapping=farsidigits in a font definition works
 perfect in xelatex.

I would say that ConTeXt lacks a nice interface for that at the
moment. There is tlig/trep feature that works that way (remaps ' to
rightquote for example), but it's spread all over the place and might
be likely to change. One option are fea files (like the one Idris
 pointed you to).

Still, I would go for conversion, not for redefining fonts.
Redefining fonts is just an ugly hack that happens to solve a problem
temporary. People use it just because it's too difficult to do it in
 some other way.

[NTG-context] Passing unicode characters

2008-07-22 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi everyone,
Is it possible to pass a character to another in MKIV, I mean, like
XeTeX in which one can pass one unicode character to another one (this
is done in some mapping files with some lines in it of the form
U+0030 U+06F0 )

Re: [NTG-context] Passing unicode characters

2008-07-22 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Dear Idris,
سلام
I tested your file. What I mean is more than that. In your file if I
write 1 then it is printed as one. But I mean something like
conversion command. For example look at the output of your file. The
page number is 1. But what I mean is that engine prints every 1 as one
for example. Let me explain in a different way. I declare
\setupsection [chapter][conversion=persiannumerals]
and the engine puts persiandecimalseparator character E8C8 between
chapter numbers and section numbers. I am not satisfied with this
character and like the separator character to be a period 002E. In
XeTeX one of the font features is to assign the value of E8C8 to
002E. Then the engine automatically prints 002E whenever it has to
print E8C8 (except in math mode for which there is a \XeTeXmathcode
command).
Best wishes

Dear Idris,

you are right. I found that \setupheads[separator=something] works,
but I found a mysterious bug. Whatever one declares as a separator,
when you make a reference to the chapter, section, etc, lua writes the
number with periods.compile the attached file and look at the
reference.
Best regards,
ps: I sent a test file, but it needs a moderator confirmation. I will
send it to your email.

 سلام Mehdi,

Well, the easy way is to make E8C8 active then \define E8C8 to be the
character 002E. It sounds like XeTeX has a dedicated mechanism. But since
I don't use XeTeX maybe Mojca or one of the other XeTeX experts can look
 at this.

You may not even need active char's: There should be a way to control the
separator char in \setupsection. I'm at work right now but maybe I can
 look at this later.

Can you send a sample file?

 Best wishes
 Idris

Re: [NTG-context] Passing unicode characters

2008-07-22 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Dear Mojca,
Thanks for your complete answer. In fact, in persian (and maybe
arabic) documents, we need every digit be in persian, like chapter,
section, figure, and even formula numbers (most of the people even
prefer persian digits in formulas which is possible in xetex).
As you know, the Mapping=farsidigits in a font definition works
perfect in xelatex.
Best wishes.

There definitely is a way, but I don't know why you would want to do
remap numbers on font level. You need such hacks in LaTeX where
changing page numbers is a pain, but I would do that with conversions
 in ConTeXt.

arabic (starting with U+0660) is already defined. If you need
U+06F0, you might need to do minor modification in core-con.*, but try
 with normal arabic first.

 \setuppagenumbering
 [conversion=arabicnumerals]

 Here are the needed modifications:

 core-con.lua:
 ['arabic'] = {
 0x0660, 0x0661, 0x0662, 0x0663, 0x0664,
 0x0665, 0x0666, 0x0667, 0x0668, 0x0669
 },

you need to add the same for extendedarabic
 ['extendedarabic'] = {
 0x0660, 0x0661, 0x0662, 0x0663, 0x0664,
 0x0665, 0x0666, 0x0667, 0x0668, 0x0669
 },

 core-con.mkiv:
 \def\arabicnumerals
 #1{\ctxlua{converters.alphabetic(\number#1,arabic)}}
 \def\extendedarabicnumerals
 #1{\ctxlua{converters.alphabetic(\number#1,extendedarabic)}}

 \defineconversion [arabicnumerals] [\arabicnumerals]
 \defineconversion [extendedarabicnumerals] [\extendedarabicnumerals]

(You also need to modify core-con.mkii if you want the same feature to
 be available in XeTeX afterwards.)

And then you should be able to use

 \setuppagenumbering
 [conversion=extendedarabicnumerals]

You can also set up itemize to use arabic numbers. What exactly would
you like to do with those numbers? Then you can probably get a more
 precise answer.

Thank you. I will test that and let you know if it is what I realy

persiannumerals or arabicnumerals. I used an style you offered in one
of your posts and modified it for persian typesetting. I declared
\setuppagenumbering[conversion=persiannumerals]
and unfortunately the page numbering started from zero. The same thing
happens in footnote numbers even thouth I haven't use any conversion
for footnotes. All chapters, sections, and ... numbers starts from
zero. How can I solve this problem. Please see the attached files.

faced is that some characters (those that are in farsi and not in
arabic like Gaf, Kaf, Ya and Che) are shown only in isolated
form. How can I solve this problem. I use ubuntu and latest context
and luatex.

Hi Burak,
I almost used any font from ubuntu, Microsoft, and Mac, but the
problem is the same for all of them. As an example please see
http://www.omidali.com/test.rar
in which I have included the source file and the output. I have used 3
different fonts, namely, Arabic Transparent and Time New Roman from
windows, and SimplifiedNaskh which I found in a thread by Idris.
Thanks.

Hi Mehdi,

what font are you using? Have you tried with a different font?
