I just submitted a talk about how we use Markdown, Pandoc and ConTeXt at
Hostsharing eG, so maybe we'll meet in Chemnitz.

A poster would be nice. ConTeXt/MetaFun are overwhelmingly flexible and
powerful. It is hard to come up with a good idea. Who is targeted?

ConTeXt is interesting for people that want to

integrate a typesetting system in a publishing environment, because
ConTeXt does not stand in your way as LaTeX often do and has many
programming features (lua, xml ...) or

typeset very customized layouts.

These two target groups are very different. Integratable building blocks
for a complex publishing system or programmable layout machine – sorry, I am
just
brainstorming, but I like the idea of a poster.

At work at my cooperative Hostsharing eG we use the way Markdown -->
Pandoc --> ConTeXt and we are quite happy with the results. Sadly I
don't have time to document it in full up to now.

For my own writing I was using Markdown --> Pandoc --> ConTeXt for quite
a while and was happy with it, too. Recently I switched to Org-Mode as I
started to use org-roam to organize my Zettelkasten and want to make use
of the org-mode TODO workflow states to organize the writing process. I
use org-pandoc to export from org-mode/emacs to context. I can also use
ox-context but I have difficulties to customize it to my needs.

The main problem is that both org-pandoc and ox-context are developed by
very few people. My lisp knowledge is very limited so I have to stick
with what is there.

Having a solid pipe from the first ideas to the print pdf would be nice.
For now I would say that the exports from org-mode are the weak element
in the chain. But if they fail I can export to Markdown and do the last
steps via Markdown --> Pandoc.

That said I have to confess that I do more sophisticated layout things
like flyers in pure ConTeXt as it is much faster.

[NTG-context] ConTeXt Workshop at FrOSCon

2022-08-21 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

my workshop is over and it was quite nice. There were five people that
attended the whole workshop and two that looked into it and left after
some minutes.

I had their attention from the beginning, after I showed them the flyers
I made for my cooperative.
https://www.hasecke.eu/post/werbemittel-mit-context-gestalten/
I guess that this is what people expect from ConTeXt: individually
styled products.

The workshop was two hours long so that I could only show the very first
steps. One interesting thing is that one person never worked with TeX
or LaTeX before. The others had experience with LaTeX of course. Is this an
indication that ConTeXt can attract people that never worked with TeX
before?

There is one thing that is quite error prone for beginners, a small detail
during the installation process.

Everyone worked on Linux and was able to use the command line but
nonetheless two of five had problems to correctly set the PATH variable.

So I have one question.
Is it possible or reasonable to extend the install script so that it
adds the new path directly to .bashrc? Or at least to ask the user if
the script should do this?

Now we have to do theses steps:

sh .install.sh
copy the line with the path
vim .bashrc
insert the line, save and exit vim
source .bashrc

I can think of arguments against the idea of an installation script that
set the variable automatically. One thing is that not everyone uses
bash, many use zsh. As I use both shells I set many environment
variables in a custom file called .exportrc. So for me personally the
extension of the script would be of no advantage. But maybe it can
ease the way of beginners.

Thanks a lot to Hraban and to Joaquín. The "introduction" and Hrabans
manuscript helped me to outline the things I wanted to show.

[NTG-context] Workshop at FrOSCon

2022-06-07 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

this year there will be a real life FrOSCon in Bonn Sankt Augustin at
the Fachhochschule Rhein-Sieg again.

https://www.froscon.org/cfp/cfpapers/

I am considering to submit a workshop to bootstrap people with ConTeXt,
but I am not the best one to do this. So I would like to discuss if we
as a community can do something.

There are several possibilities:

1. Developer Room
https://www.froscon.org/cfp/cfprojects/

This is a room where a project can organize their own schedule. They can
programme, give talks or workshops. I've done some of these in the
recent years together with the Zope/Plone Community, the Python
Community or Hostsharing. It was always great fun.

2. Workshop

A workshop is scheduled in the main programme of FrOSCon. Duration: 2h.
I think that this is a good schedule to bootstrap people with LMTX and
for the first hello world steps.

3. Booth

I guess that Dante will have a booth as they had the years before.

4. A talk. I am pondering if I should submit a talk about our production
at Hostsharing but typesetting does not fit nicely in the main topics of
the conference.

Deadline is 2022-06-12.

For the Developer Room we need at least three people willing to attend
the whole time at least for one day.

If anyone would help me to organize a 2h-Bootstrap Workshop for ConTeXt
I would be very happy. Due to my holidays I am only available today and
I am unsure if I will have a stable internet connection from tomorrow
on. Sorry for the late announcement.

Ciao!

A similiary question came up in the org-mode mailinglist some weeks ago.

(Background: Org-mode is a markup used with Emacs to make single source
publishing possible)

Someone who maintains an export programme for ConTeXt uses
sectionlevels.

You get the incremental subsections and subsubsection like this.

\startsectionlevel
  \startsectionlevel
\startsectionlevel
\stopsectionlevel
  \stopsectionlevel
\stopsectionlevel

This makes it possible to ignore the part-chapter-section naming
convention and be more flexible. You can leave it to the style files to
decide which level is a part, chapter, section etc...

As I do not use this in production – only playing around with emacs and
org-mode – I cannot say if this is a good way.

Have you considered sectionlevel?
What is your opinion?

As I know that you are fluent in German I would recommend

https://deutschestextarchiv.de/

It is a collection of many, many texts in German with expired
copyright in TEI XML and other formats.

I had a hard time to convert even one text to ConTeXt, but I've got it
to work. I had the crazy idea to get a process where I simply can
download the TEI XML source and make a nice book of the text.

[NTG-context] TeXGyre Heros on Firefox

2022-03-10 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

there were some discussions on pdf viewers on the list and I know that
things are not always fine. I now have a problems with the Firefox pdf
viewer and TeX Gyre Heros.

The font looks uneven in FF, no problems elsewhere.

When I scroll into the pdf to set the display to 150% or more the font
shows up just fine. So it seems to be a display problems with firefox.

I tried several pdf versions no change.

My configuration:

  \definefontfamily[mainfont][serif][texgyreheros]
  \definefontfamily[mainfont][sans] [textgyreheros]
  \definefontfamily[mainfont][mono] [texgyrecursor][features=none]
  \definefontfamily[mainfont][math] [texgyrepagellamath]

\definefallbackfamily
  [mainfont]
  [rm]
  [Latin Modern Math]
  [scale=0.925, range=0x22C0]

\definefontfeature[smallcaps][script=latn, protrusion=quality,
expansion=quality, smcp=yes, onum=yes, pnum=yes]
\setupalign[hz,hanging]
\setupitaliccorrection[global, always]

Is there anything I can do?

And the is another issue:
To my big surprise ArialBold MT is included into the file.

I am using the current lmtx.

If you want to see the effect, download the pdf.

[NTG-context] Creating bibliographies with ox-context

Hi all,

I am kind of lost with references and ox-context and ox-epub.

Is there a tutorial how to integrate a bibliography in ConTeXt and
epub-Export?

TIA

I discovered that

\startcell[align=flushleft,width=4cm] A very long line that breaks \stopcell

does the same trick.

While the parameter width is mentioned in spreadsheet-mkiv.pdf there is
no hint that it gives you line breaking cells.

And in https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupTABLE the parameter
width is not mentioned at all.

Maybe I knew this but forgot it. And when I searched the wiki I could
not find a hint to this.

I would like to improve the wiki, any hint where a hint to this would
fit?

TIA

I found this code on the wiki

% mode=mkiv
\setuppapersize[A5]

It sets the text of bTH like p{4cm} in LaTeX in several lines.

But this does not work with my invoice code:

Nice, so I can use that instead:

\startcell[align=flushright] @ "0.2M €" 70 \stopcell

I was looking for the formatting strings, but could not find them. I
guess this is a lua thing? String formatting in lua?

Re: [NTG-context] spreadsheet product of two cells in current row

Once again me,

I set this

\setupspreadsheet
  [
period={,},
comma={.},
split=yes,

to get german numbers in my invoice like: 10.000,00 EUR.

The drawback is that I can't use a normal period and comma in the normal
text.

Any hints?

I found "row"

so:

\startcell @ "0.2f EUR" (A[row] * D[row]) \stopcell

gives the product of cell A and D in the current row.

And I even found row-n

\startcell @ "0.2f EUR" 0.19 * E[row-1] \stopcell

gives the VAT of cell E in the row before.

and:

\startcell[align=flushright] @ "0.2f EUR" E[row-1]+E[row-2] \stopcell

add the numbers of cell E in the two rows before.

It works, but is there a better approach?

[NTG-context] spreadsheet product of two cells in current row

2021-11-12 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

I thought I could find my way through the spreadsheet documentation to
make my invoices.

While it is simple to calculate the sum or the product of two cells if
you know that they are A[2] and B[2] I can't find the solution to access
cell A and B *on the same row*.

Amount | Single | Sum
2 | 5 | 10 <-- A[currentrow] * B[currentrow] does not work
3 | 4 | 12

Sum 22

The rows come from a script and there might be several items.

Any hints?

[NTG-context] improve bad habits deduplicate redundant defined values

2021-09-15 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

these are quite general questions but here they come.

I defined modular styles for an organisation so that we can use
different layouts with the same look and feel but still have many
options to change things in a special document. I have styles for
colors, fonts which are used everywhere but also styles for heads that
are only used in legal context and other heads-styles used in other
contexts. This works brilliant. I can even overwrite styles for one
document only. I'd like to name this a cascading approach.

While doing this I learned a lot and changed the way the style files are
organised from time to time.

Currently I start with colors and fonts. Then comes the page dimension
definitions, makeups, headers and footers, headlines, the toc styles,
lists and tables.

Does anyone has a similar approach with a strong opinion how to organise
the cascade?

While working on this I often found that I defined something twice,
because I forgot to delete a setup-command in a newly structured file.

Is there a way to test this? Can I grep for a warning in the log files
to find these duplicates?

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Jan Ulrich Hasecke

this looks interesting, but it's not quite what I want.

I think I would like to have a different solution on left and right
pages.

| 1. Headline on left | 2. Headline on the right page |
|page
| |lorem ipsum, dolor |
|lorem ipsum, dolor|sit amet|
|sit amet. ||

The text area stops at "dolor". So the long headline on page 2 should run into
the outermargin.

Sorry, I must confess that I am still experimenting with my layout. The
outer margin is quite big so that the headline on right pages should run
into the margin to balance the look.

Is it possible to put headline in an area combined from margin+textarea?

[NTG-context] Headline with numbers in margin doubleside layout

2021-09-13 Thread juh via ntg-context
Hi all,

I have a doubleside layout with a big outer margin.

When I set alternative=margin in setuphead the chapter numbers appear in
the left margin which is the outer margin on left pages, but the inner
margin on right pages.

While this looks good on left pages, there is much free space on right
pages.

I would like to use this space for headlines to balance the impression.

Is it possible to assign headlines to the textarea+margin somehow only
on right pages so that headlines would run into the outermargin o right
pages??

TIA
juh

[NTG-context] Why do we install context in $HOME/bin?

2021-09-10 Thread juh via ntg-context
Dear all,

the installation documentation on the wiki says:

mkdir $HOME/bin/context
cd $HOME/bin/context
wget http://lmtx.pragma-ade.nl/install-lmtx/context-linux-64.zip
unzip context-linux-64.zip
sh install.sh

AFAIR we had $HOME/context before.

Is this intended? Is it because $HOME/bin is often in $PATH by default?

What is the advantage to do it like this?

I wikified this hint here:

[NTG-context] layer disappears when showframe is set

2021-08-26 Thread juh via ntg-context
Hi,

this sample shows that the image in a layer in header disappears if showframe is
set.

\setupexternalfigures[location=default]
\definelayer[Cow]
[x=0, y=0]

\setlayer[Cow]
[x=10em, y=0mm]
{\externalfigure[cow][height=\lineheight]}
\setupbackgrounds[header][background=Cow]

\showframe

\starttext
\input knuth
\stoptext

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Jan Ulrich Hasecke
