RE: Exchange 5.5 and Windows CE - Tell me I am wrong...

2001-09-23 Thread Miley, Dan

one thing we had problems with was keeping global address list updated.

had to do an export -download -import and it's funky sometimes. I think
that's a limitation of outlook internet mail version. Don't know about the
CE version.

Thanks Dan,

We are going to try your suggestion and would let you know if it works. It

BTW, I do not think it matters whether you are using POP3 or IMAP for this
setting.

you can push outgoing mail to your ISP's relay

 mail.whoever.net

 instead of your exchange server.

receive mail at exchange, send mail throu ISP.

just a thought. (and that's what we do with outlook 2k on win2k)

 Hi folks,

I think if you use POP3 client on Windows CE machines (Tripad and Clio
etc.)
to connect to Exchange 5.5, you would have to leave SMTP relay open-to-all
on Exchange server, otherwise users can not send out emails. In other
words,
this Exchange server is open to abuse by spammers.

This is so because Windows CE does not have a settings for SMTP
authentication on its POP3 client. It does not even have setting to change
 SMTP port# from default 25.

Tell me I am wrong... tell me I am ignorant. Better yet, tell me that
there
is a workaround for this. If not, tell me I am right and make me sad...

2001-09-23 Thread Fred

If you have an idea what what IP or IP range the CE machines will connect
from, you can set IMS to deny relay to all but those adresses. I do this
with my mobile OmniSky/PPC users so they don't have to send through the
OmniSky SMTP server.

There are other methods you can use restrict relaying without
authentication. You can allow by host IP. If using VPN or dialup to
internal RAS connections you can allow relaying from Only the internal
network.

Tom,

None of these things could work in our situation. Users use different ISP to
connect to Internet so their assigned IPs do not fall in any set range.

Dialup would be very expensive since users are all over the country. VPN is
also not in the picture.

Thanks for input.
