RE: Silicon Valley salary
Geez, and I thought the 40-minute communte I just picked up on my move to Houston was bad (it was 10 minutes at my previous job). You may get paid alot but when it takes 1 1/2 hours to travel 30 miles because you can't afford to live close to work it isn't worth it. Most of the companies up there buy dinner every night for their employees because most of them don't go home til 8 or 9 pm because of traffic. Some of the people in his office sleep on futons in their office 3 to 4 days aweek instead of going home. Something to consider Diane -Original Message- From: Markus Laker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 2:56 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Silicon Valley salary Once the authorities get around to processing visa applications again, and once the airports reopen, my employer is planning to move me from its UK office here in Bracknell to its San Jose office for a couple of years. Marvellous timing, I know. Salary negotiations are beginning in earnest. Most of the Californian job sites I can find don't mention salaries these days (surprise, surprise). What does a competent C++ developer earn in Silicon Valley these days? Title: RE: Silicon Valley salary That site is extremely inflated. In Nevada, the answer would be "5-10% less than last year at this time". -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 3:00 PMTo: NT System Admin IssuesSubject: RE: Silicon Valley salary try www.salary.com. William writes: That site is extremely inflated. Perfect for negotiations, then. :-) In Nevada, the answer would be 5-10% less than last year at this time. That would be true in the UK, too. Although the salary and conditions are good where I am, we had real trouble recruiting until the late Spring. Since then, we've been able to pick up good developers as fast as we can integrate them into the company. There's no doubt that our high-tech industry has taken (and continues to take) a beating, just as yours has. Thanks for the advice, guys. Denise writes: You may be looking at upper 80's to start depending on your experience; the softening job market has lowered salaries somewhat, but you should still fare well if you have the experience. This is where I find out what they really think of me. :-) Just remember, most of what you earn will go for transportation and housing--a few grand sometimes for an a_part_ment, not to mention a house. Try this http://www.bayarea.com/ I know accommodation prices there are insane, but transport is even more expensive here than in the Valley. I recently bought a VW Golf TDI -- a $16,000 car that sells for UKP16,000 here (after heavy-duty haggling). Diesel, like petrol, routinely costs the equivalent of about $6 per US gallon. I've just managed to get my car insurance down below UKP600 a year for the first time. Anyway, thanks once again for your help and for the Web link.
