[nysbirds-l] Calverton Grumund Air field Long Island
I went over to the air field to look over the grass lands at the air fields for Short eared Owls, Hawks etc.over the weekend. Saw at least two harriers and Red Tailed hawks, but no owls. I did see a flock of 6 or 7 Meadowlarks. I got pretty good looks in my scope but when I drove closer to take pictures I was yelled at by someone who told me I should not be on the grass. I asked him why not,and he told me that the town of Riverhead prohibits this because of the threat to the Salamanders in the Grasslands. I told him I thought that salamanders inhabited wet lands and under decayed logs, but he told me that these were his instructions, and he thought it was funny also. [nysbirds-l] Avisys software redux
In the recent past, a post to this NYSbirds regarding Avisys birding software was made. In response to John Askildson’s comments, I offered, and subsequently tried to help him with Avisys. Additionally, I received other contact regarding the same software for which I offered advice. EXACTLY AS PREDICTED in my original message to this list, the problems and frustrations WERE NOT DUE to the software, nor indeed the tech support. In each case it was due to a lack of BASIC, sometimes VERY BASIC computer knowledge; this means that the difficulties would have occurred with these individuals REGARDLESS of the software, and were in fact INDEPENDENT of the software. If you are in the market for birding software, do yourself a favor and make sure you actually know how to use a computer first. Using a computer at work where an IT department does things behind the scenes for you, can leave you with a false sense of ability. If you do not - you too are likely to become frustrated and make disparaging remarks against which ever software you choose. There are many fine software products out there. Which ever you decide is right for you should not be influenced by the comments of persons whose frustrations would more appropriately be focused upon themselves. [nysbirds-l] ...NYS mammal reports ( ? )
Tuesday, 23 March: anyhow, the Coyote I saw in it's "private sanctuary" in Manhattan's Central Park is for real, wild & free... and my first full-daylight sighting of the wily beast. Since this is a birding list, this was moments after a Red-breasted Nuthatch sighting, in company with Ben Cacace - wish he had also witnessed the coyote at the same time! Anyhow, are we now adding out-of-state mammal reports to this list? I'm a big believer in sasquatches :-)) Tom Fiore, Manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [nysbirds-l] somewhat OT - mountain lion sighting
Thank you, Fred, for the link you provided me: http://www.registercitizen.com/articles/2010/03/20/news/doc4ba443430034d304727283.txt I have to laugh at the whole thing myself. I asked to see the original email, and as soon as I saw it, thought it looked fishy. Sorry for wasting the group's time, but I'm honestly glad I did. My colleague was really nervous about letting his kids play outside. Again, thanks... On Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 3:34 PM, Brien Hindman wrote: > No. Those aren't the photos. Re: Re: [nysbirds-l] somewhat OT - mountain lion sighting
Brien, wow, what a coincidence! someone i know has a friend who took photos of what is probably the same mountain lion on their Sharon,CT deck too! I've got the photos right here too! :-) truthfully, i saw the photos too, which to the unsuspecting person, myself included, look 'good'. my only question was about the two evergreen trees growing in the backyard (background) and depicted in the photos. they don't look like 'eastern' pines to me. they look like a western species, the name of which escapes me right now. they are short needled with small cones-a western mountain species i think. i do not think they are introduced 'scotch pine'. they appear to be massive, old trees. Maybe they meant "Sharon, Colorado". JPA John AskildsenMillbrook, New YorkOn Mar 23, 2010, Brien Hindman wrote: No. Those aren't the photos. Re: [nysbirds-l] somewhat OT - mountain lion sighting
We received it, and my wife researched it; it is an internet hoax or "urban legend." --Fred-- Fred Baumgarten Sharon, CT/Bronxville, NY fred...@sbcglobal.net From: Brien Hindman To: NYSBirds Sent: Tue, March 23, 2010 3:23:50 PM Subject: [nysbirds-l] somewhat OT - mountain lion sighting I apologize for the OT posting, but I figured some of you would find the following significant. A colleague of mine, a well known character designer and illustrator, just received photos a cougar hanging out on the back porch of his neighbor's property. The property in question is in Sharon, CT. I saw the photos. Really impressive and exciting. No doubt about it that it is a mountain lion. Other neighbors had previously reported cougar tracks. The cat was reported to wildlife officials. However, the sighting was met with disbelief. I don't know what sort of follow up by professionals took place. I wasn't sure what to do with the information, other than report it to the group, as even with the photographic evidence, it is still hearsay. I thought someone might find the information significant or might know someone that would. Thanks and sorry for the interruption. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler
I went looking for my first Phoebe and my first Pine Warbler today in Brooklyn's Prospect Park and came across our apparently lingering Orange-crowned Warbler. Today it seemed to be feeding with a Golden-crowned Kinglet and I saw it on both sides of the Lullwater north of Terrace Bridge. Sadly, no Phoebe or Pine Warbler yet.
