[nysbirds-l] Ward Pound Ridge, Westchester, NY: MISSISSIPPI KITE

2010-06-06 Thread dm5078

 Sunday 6/6/10
Ward Pound Ridge, Westchester, NY
Observers:
George Dadone, Arie Gilbert, Jean Loscalzo, Eric Miller, Ian Resnick, and Lou
Widerka.

The Queens County Bird Club had a great trip to WPR, the weather held up with
just a few brief showers, and in addition to the expected breeding birds,
butterflies & dragonflies, the unquestionable highlight of the day was a
MISSISSIPPI KITE that flew over us at 5:05pm on Michigan Road. Since there
were still a few hours of daylight, we tried to phone several people, but
unfortunately, we were in a "dead zone" and no one could get a cell signal.
The bird arrived from the east (CT) and flew over us to the west. All in the
group were able to get good looks and other possibilities were ruled out.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest

2010-06-06 Thread eyeflight16
I had a great time at Sterling Forest today. Although the weather was very
threatening, at the Ironwood Drive powerline cut I still managed to see many
Prairie Warblers and 3 Golden-winged Warblers. This is a bird I have been
trying to see for 3 years, and I am so happy that I finally was able to get
here to see them. Although they were pretty elusive, I got spectacular looks at
an adult male singing out in the open. Something that I noticed was how I never
heard or saw Blue-winged Warblers. I guess that's why the golden-winged are
here.

[nysbirds-l] LI Birds: Sandwich Tern+++

2010-06-06 Thread Shaibal Mitra
A Sandwich Tern was present on the blustery flats at Cupsogue, near Moriches
Inlet, this afternoon, accompanied by two Arctic Terns--one First Summer and
one Second Summer-type. Also seen were one Roseate, two First Summer Common,
and five Second Summer-type Common Terns.

Photos of some of these birds can be seen at:

http://picasaweb.google.com/tixbirdz/LongIslandMiscellany2010#

Shorebird numbers around Moriches Inlet have diminished drastically since last
week, and, as suggested above, non-breeders of various kinds have made a big
push lately. In addition to the various sub-adult larids, which included
Skimmers and Laughing Gulls as well as the terns mentioned above, I saw a
winter aspect Dunlin and a flock of 19 morose-looking and apparently unemployed
Oystercatchers on the flats today. On the other hand, Pat saw two
breeding-plumaged White-rumps at Pikes, so this late-migrating species is still
on the move.

Over the roiling ocean we saw one Cory's, one Greater, and two unidentified
large shearwaters at Cupsogue and one Sooty and two unidentified large
shearwaters at Shinnecock. Immature Gannets were present by the hundreds,
mostly moving from east to west now.

Yesterday Tom Burke and Gail Benson saw a similar movement of Gannets, as well
as Greater, Manx, and Sooty Shearwaters, plus Wilson's Storm-Petrel in this
same area. They also recorded a Caspian Tern at Cupsogue yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown - Kentucky Warbler and more

2010-06-06 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
There was a Kentucky Warbler in Doodletown this morning. I found the bird a
hundred yards or so up Pleasant Valley Rd. from its start at the T intersection
with Doodletown Rd. I heard it singing as soon as I made the left turn onto
Pleasant Valley Rd. and saw it on both sides of the road. Around noon, I heard
it singing fairly deep into the brush on the east side of the road.

Other highlights included three Pileated Woodpeckers at Herbert Cemetery. I was
within a hundred feet of the three and had prolonged, unobstructed looks. They
seemed oblivious to my presence. There was a male and female and, I believe, a
juvenile.

There was also at one and perhaps two Worm-eating Warblers on Lemon Rd. up the
hill from the reservoir. I have had them many times further up on Pleasant
Valley Rd., but not in that area.

If you are unfamiliar with the place names that I've mentioned there are now
maps at various locations in Doodletown showing the locations of different
roads, house foundations, etc.

With the regular Doodletown breeders as well, I had a great morning of birding.

[nysbirds-l] Staten Island, Sat. 5-Jun-2010 incl. Caspian Tern & Chipping Sp.

2010-06-06 Thread Ben Cacace
*Date*: Saturday, 5 June 2010 (7:30a-6:50p)
*Location*: Clove Lakes Park, Great Kills Park & Goethal's Bridge Pond
*Reported by*: Ben Cacace

Best bird of the day was the last bird. While watching every Common Tern
from the front of the docked ferry on the Staten Island side I spotted a
larger tern flying below the ferry. It's bill was red and it had an
obviously different wingbeat. The bird's bill was thicker than the Commons
and was a distinctive red. This was my first *CASPIAN TERN*.

According to the checklist I missed only 1 of the abundant summer breeders.
This was American Crow. On Staten Island I now only call crows to species
when heard. Both Fish and American have been heard fairly regularly.

*Clove Lakes Park* (2.5 hours): Typical breeders seen. According to the list
only EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WARBLING VIREO & CHIPPING SPARROW are 'Rare' for
the Summer season. The vireo & sparrow were just north of Martling Ave.
south of the red bridge which is one of my favorite spots in the park.
Species seen - 29.

*Great Kills Park* (2.75 hours): I arrived around high tide to see what the
situation is like when the salt flats are under water. The most obvious
shorebirds were the 18+ SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on the beach near the north end
of the flats. Also seen were 6 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 KILLDEER, 1
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER & 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. The breeding plumaged HORNED
GREBE continues off the salt flats. A blue morph LITTLE BLUE HERON continues
on the flats. Heard along Buffalo St. were YELLOW WARBLER & COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT. Additional species - 19.

*Goethal's Bridge Pond* (2.75 hours): No new shorebirds were added. Seen
were 2 KILLDEER, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS & 16+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. Other
birds seen were 1 OSPREY, 2 TURKEY VULTURES & 8 SNOWY EGRETS. Additional
species - 6.

Three additional species were *seen at the ferry* including CASPIAN TERN,
COMMON TERN & LAUGHING GULL.
