[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwings
Before leaving to visit family I had a little time to bird northern Sullivan County this morning and was surprised to find two Bohemian Waxwings in Debruce. I was able to observe them for five minutes before they flew out of sight. I did not see any food source for them in the area so I believe they were just taking a rest in their travels. [nysbirds-l] Just Another Orange-crowned
Orange-crowned Warbler at the Jones Beach West End turnaround today. I mention it as it adds another to the seemingly unusual number of them this year, for those who crunch this sort of thing. (My group doing the CBC at Jamaica Bay WR last week found 2 individuals). Otherwise, it's gotten quite slow at Jones. A lone chickadee was unusual for the location, so I made sure I got a good look at it. [nysbirds-l] black vuture: katonah/golden's bridge
Hi, I'd like to report a black vulture sighting across from Grierson Preserve on Todd Rd in the Katonah/Golden's Bridge area at 3:15. I've seen black vultures in the area during winter before, and have thought nothing of it being from Texas. I had a conversation with a gentleman whose name escapes me last year about black vultures, and discovered that reporting such a sighting in winter would be helpful to those on the list. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&g=201+Todd+Rd,+Katonah,+Westchester,+New+York+10536&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=41.289771,-73.629792&spn=0.007151,0.016512&z=17&msid=213860840216628568285.0004982fa6be3105a22af -- "The test of us as a society is not necessarily how we treat the best among us but how we treat the most questionable." - Ben Loeterman -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull/Brooklyn (first winter)
During an unsuccessful search for the adult Black-headed Gull this morning, I found a first-winter BLACK-HEADED GULL on the same fishing pier that the adult has been. It was not as windy today (15-20 mph instead of 25-30 mph) so I can't say for certain the adult has refuted my extreme wind theory I posited in my earlier post. Here are a couple of digi-bin shots of the immature: http://picasaweb.google.com/aplomadoperegrine/BlackHeadedGullSDec2010# I left briefly only to get a phone call from Heydi Lopes that she was coming to try and see the adult. Unfortunately when I got back there was a couple walking a large Black Lab on the pier and the bird was not to be found. Heydi and her sister Pam (visiting from New Orleans) joined me for an additional 30 minutes of unsuccessful searching. [nysbirds-l] King Eider/Black-headed Gull
Birded yesterday along Riis Park/Fort Tilden coast (Queens county) with Seth Ausabel, Corey Finger and Bob Dieterich. First bird of the day was the first winter KING EIDER that had initially been found on Saturdays' Brooklyn CBC. The bird was just off a jetty toward the eastern of Fort Tilden. Here is a map: http://tinyurl.com/23sl8g9 The bird was 1 or 2 jetties west of this on the CBC. A caveat though, a search for the bird yesterday afternoon was not successful. Some protracted scoping from Riis Park pulled out a couple of distant RAZORBILLS (thanks to Seth). Other highlights for day were 1500+ Black Scoters, 8-10 White-winged Scoters, 25-20 Red-throated Loon, 11 Purple Sandpipers on Breezy Point jetty and 15-20 Common Eider. A lot of seaducks went unidentified as they very far out on the ocean. Just before returning home I made a quick stop at the Veteran's Memorial Fishing Pier (end of 69th Street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn) and found the recurring adult BLACK-HEADED GULL. There seems to be a partial m.o. for this bird now. The 3x it has been seen this fall (all in the last 10 days), it was roosting on the pier with RBGU in 20-30 mph NW winds.
