Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) 4/30: 16 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen at the beginning of Towpath Road. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was found in the mucklands along Rt.31. SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, AMERICAN BITTERN, and a possible LEAST BITTERN were found on Railroad Road.An IBIS species was seen flying in the area of the main pool to Tschache Pool. Derby Hill -- Derby Hill had its best week of the season and its best day on 4/27. In all 11,234 raptors were counted. On 4/26 a PROTHONATORY WARBLER was seen and at the end of the day a flight of over 1,200 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS was seen. 4/27 was the best day of the season so far with 6,319 raptors counted. Highlights were the seasons second BLACK VULTURE and an all time one day high count of 26 GOLDEN EAGLES. Also 4,901 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and 4 SANDHILL CRANES. 4/28 and 29 had a PRAIRIE WARBLER in the vacinity. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Birds: Common Terns and Willets
This morning one Common Tern fishing in front of the Saltmarsh Nature Center in Marine Park while another Common Tern displayed for food from the shore. After catching a small prey, the first bird fed the second one and then displayed briefly before returning to work. A paired couple. Four Willets sighted earlier near the same spot, one Oystercatcher and one Greater Yellowlegs. To add to Shai's report on terns, Helen Hays told me a short time ago that 1000-1500 terns (mostly Commons) arrived at their nesting colony on Great Gull Island, Suffolk County this morning. Pam Musk and I birded the Satratoga Battlefields in a rag-top Mini :) full sun, 68f, highlights: 8 American kestrels. 5+ Eastern Meadowlarks,visual. 1 Brown Creeper 1 Yellow-rumped warbler. 1 Blue-winged warbler. 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, pr. 1 Eastern wood peewee. The Blue wing was singing its heart out and provided great looks at the Nature center lower parking lot along with the Peewee. Dan Furbish. Saratoga Springs, NY. On the weekends.
