2011-06-05 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
June 5 - Today at the Batavia Waste Water Treatment Plant there was a
flock of 19 Semi-palmated Sandpipers, an adult male Common Merganser, a
lingering adult male Ring-neck Duck, 34 Ruddy Ducks, a pair of Northern
Shovelers, and two male American Wigeons.

At the Alabama Swamps:

At Oak Orchard WMA a TRUMPETER SWAN and an adult Pied-billed Grebe with 6
young at Windmill Marsh. A Common Moorhen at Goose Pond. The nesting Bald
Eagle will soon be leaving the nest.

At Iroquois NWR there two nestling Bald Eagles on the nest and an adult
nearby, and a third year Bald Eagle was observed fly two miles north north on
the Feeder Road from Rt. 77 making it a five Bald Eagle day. (I did not
check the Bald Eagle nest at the Tonawanda WMA.) At Kumph Marsh there were 5
male American Wigeons, and one male Green Winged Teal. At Cayuga Pool
there was a total of 4 American Coots with 14 young, 2 Common Moorhens with 5
young, 10 Black Terns, and I was fortunate enough to see a Least Bittern
fly across the pool .

Best Wishes for Great Birding,
Bill Watson

[nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Sandhill Crane

2011-06-05 Thread LARRY FEDERMAN
One can view the Refuge from the Town of Shawangunk Park on Long Lane.
The main areas of the Refuge (usually accessed from the Hoagerburgh Road
entrance) are indeed closed for restoration.

[nysbirds-l] 2 Kentucky Warblers, Rockefeller SP

2011-06-05 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi all,

There are currently two singing Kentucky Warblers at Rockefeller SP (only one
has been reported, I believe). One is near the northern junction of Ash Tree
Loop and Overlook Trail (it moves from northeast of the junction to south of
it, singing from, I assume, the edges of its territory). This bird (Bird A) has
a normal song. The second bird (Bird B) is singing a two-parted song, coming
from just southwest of the southern junction of those two trails. They are not
the same bird, as I've heard both songs delivered in immediate succession from
the different spots, repeatedly.

At one point, Bird A flew to the southern edge of its territory (I saw it), to
have a singing duel with Bird B. I'm also hearing a regular song from the south
(as Bird A sings from the north), but I assume Bird B is simply switching
between songs. The alternative would be, of course, that there are actually
three singing Kentucky Warblers in this general area. I wonder if there are any
females around...unlikely, I would guess, as these birds are singing frequently
in midday--and so are probably unpaired. Still, something to keep track of!

Good birding,

Benjamin Van Doren

[nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Sandhill Crane

2011-06-05 Thread LARRY FEDERMAN
One can view the Refuge from the Town of Shawangunk Park on Long Lane.
The main areas of the Refuge (usually accessed from the Hoagerburgh Road
entrance) are indeed closed for restoration.

They are closed until further notice so I hope it was seen from the road.

This morning, at 9:45 am, I found a Sandhill Crane at the Shawangunk
Grasslands (Hoagerburgh entrance), Ulster County. The bird was
feeding. It flew after a few minutes. It headed north. I could see
it 1/2 mile away, flying over Ralph Tabor at the town park, still
vocalizing. I'll post photos later today.

the Feeder Road from Rt.
