[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [bluewing-group] Mississippi Kites in Root, NY
Forwarded message below from a young lady from Binghamton. Rather bad news for the kites this year. Andy Mason Hi, My mom and I took a trip to see the Mississippi Kites in Root, Ny last Tuesday. We had many lengthy, good looks at the Kites (1 at a time as there was always one on the nest). I have attached a few pictures of them flying. We also took an unexpected trip up yesterday after my mom's work was cancelled. We immediately knew something was wrong when we saw both kites at the same time far away from the nest. We met a local man who told us that he had found the kite nestling on the ground dead, he believes killed by crows. We did not get as good looks yesterday but for the first time saw them perched together (far away-behind branches-no good pictures). We did have them both flying for about one hour at a time however. [nysbirds-l] BB & Semi-palmated Plovers, Least Sandpipers
A difficult kayak trip to Goose Creek in Flanders against a strong wind yielded over a dozen Black-Bellied Plovers (non-breeding plumage, of course), another 15+ Least Sandpipers, 4 Piping Plovers, a handful of Saltmarsh Sparrows and lots of nesting Least Terns. [nysbirds-l] Least Bittern(s)? in Massapequa Preserve
On an after dinner walk this evening in the Massapequa Preserve I observed a least bittern in the pond north of the USGS Gauging Station (the 2nd pond north of Clark Boulevard). I was sitting on the bench that overlooks this small pond for a few minutes when a male least bittern flew out of the phragmites on the e/s/o the pond (about halfway up the pond) and flew north landing in the phragmites at the north end of the pond, in full view. I watched it for about five minutes; at first it clung to a phrag stem but then moved down and to the right ending up out of sight, in the northeastern corner of the pond, screened behind a closer growth of phragmites. I did not see it in that spot again. I sat for 45 minutes and as it was beginning to get dark I got up to leave when another (or the same?) least bittern flew across the pond from the western side of the pond to the eastern side, about halfway up the pond (landing at about the same spot the first bird left from). With the fading light I couldn't make out if it was a male or female. Given the fact I never saw the first bird fly from the northeastern corner to the western side of the pond I think, but am not positive, it was a second least bittern. I intend to scope out the pond tomorrow evening in an effort to determine if there is a single bird or a pair Also had a beautiful view of five barn swallows perched on a single phragmites stem arching over the water John Turner -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [nysbirds-l] Access to property north oft EPCAL (Calveron/Riverhead)
This morning, on my way to check for the previously reported Blue Grosbeaks at the EPCAL propertry in Calverton, I stopped in at the fiekd to the north of Rt 25- this is the field that has the radar station at the end of the paved road. While I was sitting in my car watching an Indigo Bunitng, a Riverhead Town Police car came up and the officer told me that I was not allowed to be on that property. I'm curious as to whether or not other birders have had problems with police there- I've been driving in for at least 5-7 years. I don't think the road or the fields are posted, although the small fenced area around the radar station is posted. I had a prolonged discussion with the officer regarding ownershipp of the property- I've been told by DEC that the property is or will soon be part of the Calverton Cemetary- he said it belongs to the FAA, but either way I don't see how the town would have jurisdiction, especially since the property is not posted. I strongly suspect that this is a case of local town authorities trying to throw their weight around. My impression is that Riverhead is not at all friendly to environmental concerns and birders are the visible "front line" of the pro-environment camp. If anyone has any insight, including who to contact for information, I would appreciate it. Please respond offline if this would be considered off- topic for the list. I didn't see the grosbeaks, but will probably check back at EPCAL this afternoon.
