[nysbirds-l] Black Vultures in Niagara Falls - 20 Sept (belated)

2011-09-22 Thread Jim Pawlicki
A quick note that along the Robert Moses Parkway in Niagara Falls this past
Tues (9/20), 2 Black Vultures accompanied by a juv. Red-tailed Hawk were
soaring along the gorge about overhead the east parking lot at Devil's Hole
State Park. I watched the birds for about 10 minutes as they gained altitude
and then glided to the west across the Niagara River and into Ontario. I'm
assuming that these birds are part of the 2-4 individuals that have been
reported as frequenting the lower Niagara River from Goat Island north to
Lewiston since early last winter and would assume that they are now
residents in the area.

Also at Goat Island in Niagara Falls that same morning were 2 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls (1st-cycles) resting on rocks about mid-river, while on
the island was a decent sized group of warblers that included Wilson's,
Palm, Yellow-rumped, Blackpoll, Bay-breasted, Black-throated Green,
Nashville, Tennesee, Black-and-white, Redstart, and 2 Cape Mays. Fort
Niagara State Park in Porter later in the day added Blackburnian, Magnolia,
Ovenbird, and Hooded Warblers, along with Wood, Gray-cheeked, several
Swainson's Thrushes.
