[nysbirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird continues at Lenoir Preserve and was joined by a second hummingbird

2011-11-25 Thread bochnikm

The Rufous Hummingbird continued at the Beverly Smith Butterfly garden at
Lenoir Nature Preserve in Yonkers and was joined by a second hummingbird late
today. Both were seen at the same time. We do not know if we have been looking
at two, one at a time, or if the second bird just showed up.
Directions to Lenoir
In the southwest portion of Westchester County (The city of Yonkers) -
Take the Saw Mill River Parkway to Exit 9, Executive Blvd. Take Executive Blvd.
to its end at North Broadway and turn right (north). Go 1/4 mile and turn left
onto Dudley Street. Lenoir's parking lot is on the left. ( some parking is
available at the mansion, second driveway on the left from the light at North
Broadway and Executive Blvd).

You can also take metro North to the Yonkers train station and then take the #
6 bus which will drop you off at Dudley Street.

See http://www.hras.org/wtobird/lenoir.html for a map of the park. PLEASE make
sure the gate to the butterfly garden is locked when you leave.

Michael Bochnik
PS: The County Executive, Rob Astorino c...@westchestergov.com wants to close
all 6 nature centers in Westchester County, including Lenoir. We need people to
e-mail the county executive and the county legislators to keep Lenoir open.
Just google Westchester County Executive and Westchester County Legislators to
find out how.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park

2011-11-25 Thread Robert Lewis
In Westchester County, at Croton Point Park late this afternoon, my wife and I
came upon two calling Great Horned Owls. They were not in the grove where
people frequently encountered owls several years ago. I'll be glad to give more
details to those who may be scouting for the upcoming Christmas Count.

Otherwise the birding was quite dull.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose at Van Cortlandt Park

2011-11-25 Thread gjm2044
The GWFG was on the lake at Van Cortlandt Park at about 12:30 this afternoon.
Later the bird was grazing on the 14th hole of the golf course and not paying
the golfers any mind. Also had two Snowy Geese with the flock of Canada Geese
on the golf course and three pairs of Hooded Merganzers.

Got some good photos of the GWFG:

[nysbirds-l] East End Birding (Suffolk Co.) 11/25

2011-11-25 Thread Brent Bomkamp
A mild and sunny day provided for some relatively interesting birding along
the South Fork of Long Island. Although ducks, geese, and other
waterbirds seem to be increasing, few passerines were seen anywhere along
the route. Below are the highlights

*Montauk Point*
Scoters of all three species are now number in the tens of thousands,
reminiscent of numbers typically seen later in the season.
23 Razorbills
1 first-winter Laughing Gull

*Deep Hollow Ranch*
Greater White-fronted Goose continues

*East Lake Jetty*
1 first-winter Forster's Tern

*Fort Pond Bay*
1 Red-necked Grebe
133 Common Loons

*Hook Pond*
No Tundra Swans
53 American Coot

Afterwards, I stopped at Patchogue Lake where, although Ring-necked Duck
numbers had dropped precipitously, I counted 283 American Coots between the
north and south ends of the lake. The male Eurasian Wigeon was still
present on West Lake.

[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Thursday,
November 24th, at 10:00pm. Happy Thanksgiving! The highlights of
today's tape are BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER,
EARED GREBE, BROWN PELICAN, WESTERN KINGBIRD, SNOWY OWL, ROSS'S GOOSE,
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE,
TUNDRA SWAN, and EURASIAN WIGEON.

An excellent week locally. In Central Park on Wednesday a
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER appeared around the Maintenance Field just
south of the 79th Street Park Transverse and the Ramble Shed. Later
it was seen briefly in the Ramble itself, moving energetically and
quickly disappearing. Today the bird appeared again, west of the
Maintenance Field, but moved off rapidly. The warbler may have been
first seen back on the 17th, so it seems to be hanging in but covering
a wide area requiring patience, a good search plan, and some luck. An
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER put in several appearances this morning just
west of the Maintenance Field.

At Jones Beach West End, an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER found Tuesday
along the fishermen's access road, just west of the entrance to the
Coast Guard Station, was still present today. The flycatcher
generally perches in the bayberry bushes in the dunes adjacent to the
road, sometimes up in the open, but here again patience is helpful.
Also at the West End, two MARBLED GODWITS continue at least to
Wednesday on the Coast Guard Station bar or across the inlet at lower
tides. Over 130 Red Knot and 330 American Oystercatcher have been
there also. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was around the West End
shrubbery Saturday through Wednesday, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR joined a
flock of 100 Snow Buntings around the West End 2 parking lot Saturday.

A sea watch last Saturday afternoon at West End 2 recorded eight
PARASITIC JAEGERS, one a dark individual, moving east along with
hundreds of Northern Gannets and other seabirds, moving with rather
than against the strong southwest winds.

An EARED GREBE remains at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, staying in the
bay south of the West Pond, with several Horned Grebes. It can be
viewed from the trail south of the West Pond, and is closer in at high
tide. Three BLUE-WINGED TEAL were among the ducks on the West Pond
Sunday.

On Sunday a WESTERN KINGBIRD was spotted at Breezy Point by the last
parking lot, and then relocated in the now closed parking area at the
Silver Gull Club that is just west of the Fort Tilden fishermen's
parking lot at the west end of that park. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was
also seen at Breezy Point Saturday, and two PARASITIC JAEGERS were
among the sea birds moving west, past the Tilden fishermen's lot on
Sunday.

An adult ROSS'S GOOSE, found Monday with Canadas at Floyd Bennett
Field near the Aviators Sports building, was still being seen
Wednesday morning.

Two exciting birds at the Read Sanctuary in Playland Park in Rye,
Westchester County, were a reappearance of the immature BROWN PELICAN
offshore last Sunday morning, and then a visit of a drake BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE along with nine Common Goldeneye on Wednesday morning, this
flock staying for an hour before continuing south down the Sound.

At Van Cortlandt Park, the lingering GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
on the parade grounds early Saturday morning.

As a note to those who feel invasive plants have no value, a patch of
porcelain berry at Pelham Bay Park last Saturday contained an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, a SCARLET TANAGER, and three BALTIMORE
ORIOLES.

Arlene Borko and I got out for some early morning birding yesterday. No
Red-throated Loons nor Bonaparte's Gulls today. We did find about three dozen
Snow Buntings at the Neversink Reservoir, and a nice first year NORTHERN SHRIKE
on Clements Road near Liberty. Other waterfowl numbers were about the same.

[nysbirds-l] Niagara River - Thanksgiving Day

2011-11-25 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
We were out on the Ontario side from the river mouth to the control gates
above Niagara Falls. Highlights were:

- The continuing RAZORBILL off of the old fort at the river’s
mouth.

- Three BLACK VULTURES flying in the gorge a little downriver from
the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Shortly after (around 9:00) FOUR were found
perched with two Turkey Vultures on the Ontario side immediately north of
the bridge. Earlier we had seen at least 10 TURKEY VULTURES soaring around
but did not see any Blacks then.

- A first-winter FRANKLIN’S GULL flying at the base of the south
end of the Moses power dam; also seen perched on the “roosting rocks” ¼ mile
upriver, from Devil’s Hole State Park. There have been no recent reports of
a Franklin’s Gull at Artpark State Park so I assume this is the same bird in
a new location, as first noted by Jim Pawlicki last weekend.

- 3 adult ICELAND GULLS at the Adam Beck overlook (power plants)

- 1 adult ICELAND GULL in Queenston, downriver from the L-Q Bridge.

- 1 adult ICELAND GULL seen from the control gates, downriver from
the L-Q Bridge.

- 1 possible adult THAYER’S GULL at the Adam Beck overlook, which
flew out of sight before ID could be confirmed.

- 1 adult LITTLE GULL downriver from the Queenston boat ramp.

- 1 LITTLE GULL at Fort Erie.

- 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the control gates.

- 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Goat Island.

Bonaparte’s Gulls were in good numbers with concentrations at lower
Queenston, the roosting rocks, the Whirlpool, and Buffalo-Fort Erie, with
just a few hundred around the falls. Herring Gulls were in moderate numbers
around the falls in the morning (well below peak, however) but seemed much
reduced in the afternoon. There were no reports of the California Gull this
day. Purple Sandpipers have yet to be found on the river this season. Lots
of diving ducks upriver from the control gates.

Good birding!

An update on the status of Lenoir Preserve (open or closed) and the
selasphorus hummer seen there recently would be much appreciated.

[nysbirds-l] No Black-throated Gray but...

2011-11-25 Thread Jim Clinton
No Black-throated Gray today at Central Park but I had 5 Fox Sp., 2 Hermit
Thrushes, 2 Brown Creepers, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, and a Baltimore Oriole.
This still beats Black Friday Shopping!
