[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park 5/24

2012-05-24 Thread gabriel willow
This evening's NYC Audubon Bryant Park bird walk (5/24 from 5-6 PM) was quite
productive in spite of the intermittent rain.  In the park proper, we had a
Gray-cheeked Thrush, Gray Catbirds, several Ovenbirds (at least a half-dozen),
Common Yellowthroats, a couple of female Blackpoll Warblers, American Redstarts
(female-plumaged as well), and a little flitting warbler with a yellow throat
that may have been a parula but I thought was a Nashville.  This was in the
London planes behind the Library, in the NE corner of the park.  I hope someone
gets a better look at that warbler than I did.  There were also a lot of Common
Yellowthroats in the treetops acting like proper warblers, confusing matters.
In front of the Library, in the Northern stand of honey locusts, we had an
excellent mixed warbler flock, including:
Northern Parula (1 ♀)Black-throated Blue Warbler (2, ♀&♂) the male was hopping
on the ground with sparrows!Yellow Warbler (1 ♀)Magnolia Warbler (1 ♂)American
Redstart (1 ♀)Common Yellowthroat (several, ♀&♂)Wilson's Warbler (1 ♀)Ovenbird
(1)
With the rain and clouds, it quickly got too dark to see colors well, but I
suspect there were some other species there as well.  Definitely worth
investigating in the morning!
Good birding,
Gabriel WillowNYC Audubon

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP

2012-05-24 Thread icterus
Hempstead Lake State Park 24 May

I was with the South Shore Audubon today.. Overcast and, surprisingly, no
migrants. We did see a TURKEY VULTURE several times during the morning. In
contrast to the one seen here in late March, this one seems to be hanging out.
Interesting.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Continues at Connetquot River S. P. (Suffolk Co.)

2012-05-24 Thread ken feustel
During a breeding bird survey at CRSP I again encountered the previously
reported Yellow-throated Warbler singing on both sides of the road to the fish
hatchery. This bird has now been present in the same location since early
May.The bird ranged from the entrance road toll booth north to the gray barn
building. The bird moved frequently and was actively singing, but no evidence
of breeding was observed. Otherwise, the birding was slow. No Acadian
Flycatchers were noted, and only three Wood Pewees were recorded in a five mile
walk. No migrant warblers were heard or seen.

2012 Great South Channel trip - August 12-14, 2012. Same price as last
year. Reservations are required and can be made as of at
http://www.cresli.org/cresli/reservations/offshore_res.html.

The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island is a non-profit
research and education organization. Our mission is: "To promote and
foster understanding and stewardship of coastal ecosystems through research
and education ." Part of our work is to observe and document the whale and
sea bird populations of NY and New England and to take people to see these
animals in the wild. Since 2002 we have been offering incredible and
successful multi-day offshore pelagic bird and whale observation trips.

Our trips have been 100% successful and we have encountered thousands of
pelagic birds over the years . We've also encountered fin, minke, sei, and
right whales; common, white-sided, dolphins, pilot whales

We are planning one trip to the Great South Chanel in August 12-14, 2012
(51 hours). The vessel is the 140' Viking Starship that can sleep up to 65
passengers in navy style bunks. Excellent food will be available at
reasonable prices. Passengers may bring their own food as well. The trips
will be led by a seasoned marine mammal biologist and professor. Volunteers
from CRESLI will assist in photo-identification spotting and data
collection.

(1)Our August trip will leave at 6:30 PM on August 12, 2012 and head to
Martha's Vineyard (MV) to pick up (and drop off) passengers. We expect to
arrive at Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard at approximately 12:30 AM on 8/13;
we leave MV at 1:00 AM and proceed to the GSC. We should reach the whale
grounds around day break, spend the next 24 hours amongst the whales and
birds of the GSC. The following morning, we will have the option of either
remaining on the whale grounds, or returning early to Martha's Vineyard for
land-based birding, hiking, or other activities. The vessel will ultimately
depart Martha's Vineyard at 4:30 PM on 8/14 and return to Montauk at 10:30
PM on 8/14/12.

1. Cost = $275 for CRESLI members; $300 for non-members

2. Children 6 - 12 are half price

3. Under 6 are free
