[nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kite, Sterling Forest, Orange County
Mississippi Kite, Sterling Forest, Orange County I finally headed up to Sterling Forest after work to lookfor the Mississippi Kites. I arrived at 5:15 PM to a couple of birders but nokites. At 5:49 one soared in from the north and circled overhead for about 10minutes before coming down and landing in the bare tree. I left the area tobird Ironwood Road, lots of bird but the Golden-winged Warblers were silent. After a half hour I checked on the kites again to see if the second bird hadcome in but it had not. I left the area around 6:50PM For those needing directions to the area, Hudson RiverAudubon’s web site has direction from Westchester County/Tappan Zee Bridge at http://www.hras.org/wtobird/strelingforest.html Michael Bochnik -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Long Island Birds.
Like many others, I combed Jones/Gilgo beach this morning searching unsuccessfully for Black-necked Stilt and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Needing a change of scenery (and a break from the no-see-ums), I ran out to Cupsogue and was rewarded with a FOS Royal Tern, and a single adult ARCTIC TERN (photo on eBird) along with large numbers of the expected terns and shorebirds. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Info about the Mississipi Kites
I just read this posting in NJ birding at Birdingonthe.Net. It seems that the area where the Kites are building their nest will have some restrictions regarding access and birders interested in going there to see the birds should be aware of the situation. [nysbirds-l] Mecox Inlet Birds (Suffolk Co.)
Early this morning we stopped at Jones Beach Golf Course and Zach's Bay, where the previously reported Black-necked Stilt was a no-show. We then headed out east to Mecox Inlet arriving at 9:00AM. After a little scanning, we came upon the two Wilson's Phalaropes careening around the sand flats. Also present with the shorebird contingent on the flats were six breeding-plumaged White-rumped Sandpipers. We drove back west along Dune Road but did not turn up anything noteworthy. One at Far Rockaway and one on Monmouth Beach NJ. This follows the moribund bird mentioned by Chase from Robert Moses. [nysbirds-l] Robert Moses Sea Watch
Sea watch at Robert Moses SP field #2 30 May Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) arrived at 8:15 AM and stayed till 9:00 stopping by Zachs Bay on the way home (no Black-necked Stilt that had been reported yesterday). The watch was slow this morning with the most abundant birds mid sized terns too far out to ID. However, we did have great scope views of a SOOTY SHEARWATER flying east. Other seabirds seen were 2 NORTHERN GANNET, 1 ROYAL TERN, COMMON and LEAST TERNS and a COMMON LOON. In and around a breeding cage to the west of our vantage point were PIPING PLOVER with newly hatched young.
