[nysbirds-l] Mecox Phalaropes and Calverton Grasshopper Sparrows

2012-06-10 Thread John Gluth
The 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES continued at Mecox this morning (8:30-9:15),
but the Red-necked was MIA. Only Common and Least terns, no Sandwich.

>From the beach I headed north to the Calverton grasslands (former Grumman
airfield), where I found a healthy number of GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS and
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, 16 and 10 respectively. Two GRSPs were out on the
"radar fields" north of Route 25, the rest were on the airfield grounds
proper (west runway). Below is a list of only the species seen/heard on
the grasslands or the immediately adjacent woods.

Turkey Vulture 3
Red-tailed Hawk 2
American Kestrel 1
Chimney Swift 2
Eastern Kingbird 3
Horned Lark 4 (2 adults, 2 juveniles)
Tree Swallow X
Barn Swallow X
House Wren 1
Eastern Bluebird 2
American Robin X
Northern Mockingbird 11
European Starling 1
Pine Warbler 1
Prairie Warbler 3
Field Sparrow 2
Grasshopper Sparrow 16 12 singing males widely distributed; 2 birds
perched and carrying food; 1 bird perched up for several minutes, but did
not sing, only called; 1 bird foraging along edge of west runway
Indigo Bunting 2
Eastern Meadowlark 10

[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern JBWR

2012-06-10 Thread Steve Walter
I was doing something a bit different -- watching the Diamond-backed
Terrapins at Jamaica Bay. The good spot for that is the south facing shore
along the West Pond trail that's often had GULL-BILLED TERN in the past. One
appeared for a little while today, landing on the shore to eat a crab (who'd
have thunk that as a tern food item -- well, maybe that's what the thick
bill is for). Also around were a few White-rumped Sandpipers and, unusual
for the refuge (especially) in spring, a Sanderling. An unidentified Cuckoo
flew by at the south end of the parking lot, where a Black-billed was seen
late in the migration.

[nysbirds-l] Midtown Birding

So I haven't been able to catch the Wilsons or Mourning at Bryant Park, but I
did see Friday around 4:30pm a female Black & White (same seen Wednesday?)

White-throated Sparrow. Despite being on the ground it didn't appear injured -
just hangin with the Sparrow. Along with seeing the Ovenbird, it was an

Although it is difficult to know for sure from the video, the bird looks
much more like a Caspian Tern than a Royal Tern b/c of the shape of the

[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern JBWR

Two GRSPs were out on the
radar fields north of Route 25, the rest were on the airfield grounds
proper (west runway). Below is a list of only the species seen/heard on
the grasslands or the immediately adjacent woods.

Turkey Vulture 3
Red-tailed Hawk 2
American Kestrel 1
Chimney Swift 2
Eastern Kingbird 3
Horned Lark 4 (2 adults, 2 juveniles)
Tree Swallow X
Barn Swallow X
House Wren 1
Eastern Bluebird 2
American Robin X
Northern Mockingbird 11
European Starling 1
Pine Warbler 1
Prairie Warbler 3
Field Sparrow 2
Grasshopper Sparrow 16 12 singing males widely distributed; 2 birds
perched and carrying food; 1 bird perched up for several minutes, but did
not sing, only called; 1 bird foraging along edge of west runway
Indigo Bunting 2
Eastern Meadowlark 10
