[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park - Connecticut Warbler - and Oakland Lake, 9/17

2012-09-17 Thread Donna Schulman
The CONNECTICUT WARBLER found by Peter Reisfeld Saturday was refound by
myself and Ian Resnick this morning,8:00am, at the "Nutmeg Meadow", east of
the 76th Ave. parking lot. It put in a brief appearance on one of the
small trees in the "meadow" and then went down into the mugwort.

There were nice areas of activity between the parking lot and the
ballfields, though not as much diversity as reported last weekend. The
ballfields and wooded pond areas were, in contrast, very quiet. Highlights
included:

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (many)
Empidonax Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe
Red-eyed Vireo
House Wren
Carolina Wren
Veery
Black-and-white Warbler
Connecticut Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
American Redstart
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Scarlet Tanager
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (at least 6)
Common Grackle

After, I birded Oakland Lake at mid-day, and found a good assortment of
birds, mostly at the far end. Highlights were 2 Wood Ducks, a Pied-billed
Grebe, American Wigeon, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, another Empidomax
flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo (near the enhance), Ruby-crowned
Kinglet,a loud chipping Northern Waterthrush, Magnolia and Black-and-White
Warblers, Northern Parula, Common Yellowthroat, and at least 4
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.

*
A good fall birding day.

I visited Alley this AM. The ball field was so dead that I started to walk
back to my car to leave. Luckily I stopped at little Alley and had a flurry
of warblers including Blackburnian, Tennessee and Blue winged. The rest of
the park was relatively quiet but just before leaving for real I stopped by
the mugwort meadow east of the 76St parking lot (knicknamed the Nutmeg
meadow by Eric Miller). In the low branches of a mature white oak tree just
north of the mugwort was an immature Connecticut warbler. Photo link
below:

Warblers summary:
CONNECTICUT
Blackburnian
Tennessee
Blue winged
Blackpoll
Magnolia
Parula
Black and white
Black throated blue
Common yellowthroat
Redstart

Happy Fall Birding,

Peter

[nysbirds-l] Photos of the Connecticut Warbler on the lawn, Bryant Park, NYC

2012-09-17 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hello all,
Here are a few photos from the one minute appearance that the Connecticut
Warbler put in for a group of birders just before noon today in Bryant
Park. Pure eye-candy.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/landp/sets/72157631560184637/

Among the cropped images there are two photos in sequence that sort of
shows the bird's gait.

Thanks to Matthew Rymkiewicz for getting the word of the bird out, and
thanks to the group of birders who spent time searching for it and was
alert when it finally flew out on the lawn.

While searching for the CONW I found a surprise bird in one of the planters
on the North side of the lawn - a very late Louisiana Watertrush. Go
figure, "the Bryant Park effect"?

great city birding,

Anders Peltomaa

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Connecticut Warbler in Bryant Park (Manhattan) 9/17

2012-09-17 Thread Mike Bryant
It's there. Seen on SW corner of lawn, foraging around people ( like two feet
away from them). Flew into bushes again in SW corner but will likely join it's
Common Yellowthroat buddies back on the lawn. Flew about 11.50 am

[nysbirds-l] Canadian Loggerhead Shrike Alert

2012-09-17 Thread Peter Doherty

Greetings. There is a critically-endangered population of Loggerhead Shrikes
in eastern Ontario, Canada. Many of the Canadian shrikes are color-banded;
others are not. Visit:
http://wildlifepreservation.ca/species-in-need/canadian-species/species-9/ for
more information and great pictures.

Last fall a banded Canadian shrike was present and photographed in Virginia
Beach. Another marked bird was seen/photographed in Delaware last year. Bill
Hohenstein photographed another marked Canadian bird at Occoquan NWR THIS
PAST WEEKEND. Remarkably, Bill's bird was a captive raised bird hatched by the
Toronto Zoo this summer and released on August 15th at Napanee, Ontario, nw of
Kingston, ONT!

Ten days ago an unmarked Loggerhead was seen and photographed in Chatham, MA.
The Canadian shrike staff reviewed the photos and aged the bird by plumage to
be a likely hatch-year bird. Given its age and location, the bird is probably a
Canadian Loggerhead.

When in the field this fall kindly confirm the identity of each shrike you
observe, check for bands and photograph when you can, regardless of ID. Each
Loggerhead observation provides data which is critical to the survival of the
species. Submit reports/photos to Jessica Steiner, jessica at
wildlifepreservation.ca

Good birding. Peter

Well, they opened up the lawn. Many birders have searched for the CT

Just got a call from Matthew Rymkiewicz. He's looking at a COWA on
the south side of the lawn RIGHT NOW.
 Good luck if you go,

 Hello all,
Here are a few photos from the one minute appearance that the Connecticut
Warbler put in for a group of birders just before noon today in Bryant Park.
 Pure eye-candy.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/landp/sets/72157631560184637/

Among the cropped images there are two photos in sequence that sort of shows
 the bird's gait.

Thanks to Matthew Rymkiewicz for getting the word of the bird out, and thanks
to the group of birders who spent time searching for it and was alert when it
finally flew out on the lawn.

While searching for the CONW I found a surprise bird in one of the planters
on the North side of the lawn - a very late Louisiana Watertrush. Go figure,
 the Bryant Park effect?

 great city birding,
