[nysbirds-l] Photos of the East Moriches Pacific Loon?

2012-12-03 Thread Angus Wilson
It's been a week since Dick Belanger (via Carl Starace) first reported this
Pacific Loon on 26 Nov, and in this time a fair number of people have
resighted it, sometimes at close range. Evidently, these encounters can be
quite hit or miss (much like the Virginia's Warbler), with some folks
scoring quite easily, while others have spent hours looking without luck.
Could there be some logic to the positive sightings, for example associated
with a particular point in the tide cycle?

The purpose of this note is to ask if there are any definitive photos. Has
anyone succeeded and is willing to share? I would very much like know what
this individual looks like, even if I don't get to see the bird with my own
eyes.

Thanks, Angus Wilson

[nysbirds-l] Pacific Loon-YES

2012-12-03 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
A small but dedicated band of birders (Ken and Sue Feustel, Carl Mullen
another whose name I forget and myself) searched all of the previously
posted sites amd discovered the bird in Tuthill cove hanging out with the
swans. Best viewing was to be had from the parking lot at the end of
Adelaide Avenue. Good and safe birding.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler @ Alley Pond Park Queens County (YES) reported by another birder....

2012-12-03 Thread Steve Walter
Updated the map once again to show approximate locations of sightings Nov.
28 (one of), Dec. 2, and today. I have marked December dates as Dn. I'm
thinking that Andrew was not including today's sighting in the range
expansion. If I'm interpreting it correctly, it's between previous
locations. One thing I have concluded by looking at the latest map - there
are about 15 Virginia's Warblers in the park. No, that's not right. Then
even I would be seeing Virginia's Warbler. Well, I picked the wrong spot at
1:00 today, except if I embrace the consolation prizes - a pair of ravens
flying roughly over "PB" and a Red Bat flying for an extended period of time
over the ball field at D2. If interested, pictures can be seen at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ on the birds recent work page. I know it's
not a bird, but close enough. It felt like trying to photograph swifts.

Congratulations Mr. Taylor!

Birders, please see Mr. Taylor's note (see below), on where the Virginia's
Warbler was seen today at Alley Pond Park.

Based on recent reports, this bird has really expanded its feeding range.
Perhaps a good strategy when searching in groups would be to split up and
take chunks of the areas it has been reported recently.

Keep those reports coming, there are many birders who have tried several
times and still have not seen it yet.

Good Birding!

2012-12-03 Thread Peter Morris
Hi,

I am thinking of trying for the Virginia's Warbler on Wednesday (5th December),
this will be my first opportunity since it was found to get there. If anyone
else is thinking of trying that day, send me an email as it seems like team
work may be the best option.

All the best,

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point: morning sightings & assistance sought

2012-12-03 Thread Anne Swaim
Morning spent birding at Croton Point Park in Westchester County offered some
nice highlights including: 330+ Snow Geese on high flyover heading SE at 9:50
am, a Peregrine Falcon bathing in large puddle by ball field before entrance,
large Am. Pipit flock (42 seen today) continuing on landfill, and 38+ Eastern
Bluebirds including 32 in one flock together.

However, the negative habitat effects from the severe and poorly-timed mowing
of the landfill remains a disappointment.

Responses off list are sought for technical and political assistance as Saw
Mill River Audubon and other interested groups seek to work together in
advocating for a management plan that recognizes Croton Point's significance as
an Important Bird Area.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach

2012-12-03 Thread sy schiff
Jones Beach West End: 3 December

The beach fauna appears to be in a winter pattern. Except for a single flock
of winter finches moving through, things appear to be settling down.
Shorebirds on the bar (it's silting in again) consist of about 20
Oystercatchers, 250 Dunlin, 150 Black-bellied Plover and 4 Red Knot. Close in
to the marina were several Common Loons, a Red-throated Loon, half dozen
Red-breasted Mergansers and 4 Long-tailed Ducks.

The usual land birds were mostly absent, Sparrows particularly. In the medium,
there is the continuing 4 Black-capped Chickadees, lots of Red-breasted
Nuthatches, a few Yellow-rumped Warblers and a wandering flock of mixed
Crossbills feeding on pine cones. These were mostly RED CROSSBILLS with a few
WHITE-WINGED mixed in; the flock appears to be hanging out. Yesterday, Pipits
and Snow Buntings were reported, but not seen by me today. I didn't go down
onto the beach,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon - St. John's Pond, Cold Spring Harbor (Suffolk/Nassau)

2012-12-03 Thread Derek Rogers
As of about 2:00 PM, there was a drake Eurasian Wigeon along the southeast
edge of St. John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor. The bird recalled the
Eurasian Wigeon that I found earlier this season on Lotus Lake in Sayville,
showing patches of pale gray wash filling in along the birds flanks and
sides. The buffy forehead was also beginning to fill in.

Best viewing for the pond is behind the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery
and up the wooden staircase. The Nassau/Suffolk border actually runs
directly through the middle of the pond which is why both counties are
referenced in the subject heading of this post.

While on the Eurasian Wigeon topic, Hard's Lake, at Southaven County Park,
held a single drake last week. A Greater White-fronted Goose was also on
the lake, toward the north end as well as a Lesser Black-backed Gull. This
is a good spot to check for birds given its location along the Carman's
River corridor. Goose and gull numbers are usually solid at this location.

Best,

Barnacle Goose was still at the VCP Parade Grounds at 4:30pm yesterday,
staying somewhat removed from (to the north of) the main group of about
1,000 Canada Geese. Also of note was one Canada Goose with a yellow neck
band, code RY87. Didn't get a good enough look at it to see if it had any

[nysbirds-l] Green-Wood Cemetery Birding Map

2012-12-03 Thread Rob Jett
In an attempt to make navigating Green-Wood Cemetery a little bit easier, I
modified the existing official map which is available on the cemetery's website
here:

http://www.green-wood.com/map-of-green-wood-cemetery

Using a pair of 1855 and 1901 maps, which shows the names of the various
landforms, i.e. ridges, hills and valleys, I overlaid these landmarks on the
current map. My reasoning was that most birders haven't a clue what the names
of the roads and paths are in places like Central Park and Prospect Park, but
they do know the geographic labels.

The file is very large (6279×7316 pixels) so if you have access to a large
format printer, it should look very good. Download the full-sized map here:

http://tinyurl.com/bskxy7q

I hope to add more birding specific hotspot labels in future versions.

Good birding,

Rob

Best,
Derek Rogers

Sy Schiff

[nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler @ Alley Pond Park Queens County (YES) reported by another birder....

2012-12-03 Thread Andrew Baksh
Congratulations Mr. Taylor!

Birders, please see Mr. Taylor's note (see below), on where the *Virginia's
Warbler* was seen today at *Alley Pond Park*.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point: morning sightings assistance sought

Re: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler @ Alley Pond Park Queens County (YES) reported by another birder....

Pete

Well, I picked the wrong spot at
1:00 today, except if I embrace the consolation prizes - a pair of ravens
flying roughly over PB and a Red Bat flying for an extended period of time
over the ball field at D2. If interested, pictures can be seen at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ on the birds recent work page. I know it's
not a bird, but close enough. It felt like trying to photograph swifts.
