[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - NO...

2012-12-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
I figured folks would be interested to know that after today's post positive
from Eileen Schwinn, the Tufted Duck was not seen. A few of us checked the
usual areas but were unsuccessful.

It appears that the best window for success may be early in the morning. Good
luck if you try for it and please post a report even if it is negative.

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Barrow's Goldeneye at Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton

2012-12-19 Thread Anthony Collerton
There has been a drake Barrow's Goldeneye hanging with the Common Goldeneye
flock at Cedar Point this last week. Saw it at around 10:30am this morning
from "the bluffs" - at the NE end of the trail in the signed "Bird Watching
Area" (yes, they really have a bird watching area, but actually the whole
park is pretty good - they're just trying to keep the birders away from the
duck-shooting blinds). The goldeneye move around a lot so patience might
be required.

[nysbirds-l] 12/ 19 Prospect Park YBChat; photo CBC correction

2012-12-19 Thread prosbird

Rob Jett reports the elusive YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT in Prospect Park ( Kings
County) on the Terrace Bridge, by the shipping containers; this bird , though
sought for 12/15 was a miss on the prospect cbc despite it being present for a
few weeks prior in that general area. Despite the miss, Prospect Park CBC set a
new record high with 64 species with a Coopers Hawk , a photo sent from my team
member Arinna Ferrario after departure.

A post yesterday about the Marine Park CBC Eurasian Wigeon "photo taken" by
Barabara Wasserman should be credited to Avi Lewis. A correction there. Heydi
Lopes took addition photos later.

[nysbirds-l] Lido Beach Passive Nature Area

2012-12-19 Thread sy schiff
Lido Beach Passive Nature Area 19 Dec.

This bay side salt marsh to the west of the Pt. Lookout marinas now shows
little damage from the effects of "Sandy" except for 4 medium sized downed
trees at the beginning of the trail leading to the bay. These trees were a
favorite perch for Boat-tailed Grackles in spring and summer. Where the marsh
previously was an almost solid expanse of marsh grass, there is now a
significant increase in the number of pools of water scoured out by the
hurricane. This looks positive for shore birding this coming spring.

One of the 2 Bay houses on the west side of Meadow Island, directly across the
bay from the preserve, is gone, the other has damage. Several houses on Cinder
Island, the island to the west of Meadow, also appear to be gone, but without a
scope, I couldn't assess the damage

Because of the high winds, there was little in the way of birds except for a
friendly Black-capped Chickadee. Out in the marsh were Mallards, Black Ducks
and a single SNOW GOOSE. A wind buffeted COOPER'S HAWK flew over. Following
the sign to the Rest Rooms from the parking lot, you go by the maintenance yard
which has a significant pile of clam shells. The pile was covered with gulls
this morning, but nothing beyond Herring Gulls and a single Great Black-backed
Gull. Worth a look.

Re: [nysbirds-l] ADMIN: Four-Letter Abbreviations

2012-12-19 Thread Richard Zaineldeen

Hello, Everyone.

I fully agree with this concept of using the full name of the species when
reporting bird sightings.
The purpose of NYSBIRDS-L is to pass along information. If any individual can't
decipher the Four-Letter abbreviations (and sometimes I have had to think hard
about what species is actually being reported) then it is to the detriment of
the birding community as a whole. HAHH!

P.S. HAHH stands for Have A Happy Holiday.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] ADMIN: Four-Letter Abbreviations

Good afternoon,

I have received a number of complaints over the past few weeks concerning the
increasing use of four-letter abbreviations of bird species being reported in
postings to NYSbirds-L.

Out of consideration for most of the recipients on this eList, please do not
use abbreviated bird names when you make your postings. This only adds to the
confusion, both to readers who are subscribed to this eList and to those who
are browsing any of the Web archives.

By spelling out the names of the bird species being reported in postings to
NYSbirds-L, this will eliminate all possible confusion and misunderstanding.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me off-list.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[nysbirds-l] Huntington Tufted Duck - yes

2012-12-19 Thread Richard Kaskan
At about 7:45 this morning I watched the Tufted Duck at the location
originally reported in Huntington across from West Marine. It was quite
close, between the docks some of the time.

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[nysbirds-l] Lido Beach Passive Nature Area

2012-12-19 Thread sy schiff
Lido Beach Passive Nature Area 19 Dec.

This bay side salt marsh to the west of the Pt. Lookout marinas now shows
little damage from the effects of Sandy except for 4 medium sized downed
trees at the beginning of the trail leading to the bay.
