[nysbirds-l] Nassau County, Smith Pond Eurasion Teal

2013-01-08 Thread Chase Cammarota
The previously reported Eurasion Common Teal was seen today at sundown at
the north end of Smith Pond in Rockville Center. There were about 25
Green-winged Teal present with it. Two of the drakes (other than the
common teal) did not have have the vertical line at the side of the
breast/front of the flank that is usually shown. These two individuals did
not exhibit other characteristics of Common Teals (horizontal white line
above the flank or the bold buffy border around the green head patches). I
supose it could be the result of molting or variation among the species. A
link below shows a record photo of the Common Teal. Also of note were two
collared Canada Geeses. I will post if any interesting info results from
my submittal to USGS.

2013-01-08 Thread Andrew Baksh
Thanks Bill for posting the link, I enjoyed going through your photos and
videos.

I agree with Peter Post's comments. In fact, this bird looks like the *
Kumlien's* I reported from Jones Beach West End II on January 1st??
Although...the legs of the bird in your photos seems a bit more saturated
and the head on your bird in some of your photos does not give that
"gentle" expression that I remember from the Jan 1st bird.

Here is a link to the Jan 1st bird with a few photos

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Lapland Longspur + Nassau County (Late Report)

2013-01-08 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Sorry for the late post, but this past weekend, Mary Beth Billerman, Ernie
Lewis and I went birding around some spots in southern Nassau County. On
Sunday, we found the continuing two male EURASIAN WIGEONS at the Massapequa
Preserve (in the creek along the edge of the pond best accessed from the
east side of the Preserve, near Harding Street). The birds have been at
this pond the past few times I have seen them at the Preserve. We were
unable to locate the hybrid wigeon that had been with them during previous
visits. Also present at the Massapequa Preserve are continuing good
numbers of Winter Wrens (at least 8 on a short walk through the woods), 3
Fox Sparrows, and other good winter birds.

At Jones Beach on Saturday, we encountered 3 COMMON REDPOLLS in the median
at West End near the turnaround, where there has been a lot of activity
lately. We also found a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the swale at the West End 2
Parking Lot loosely associating with Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. We
were unable to locate Harlequin Ducks or Purple Sandpipers at Point
Lookout, but there were very good numbers of both Red-breasted Mergansers
and Long-tailed Ducks just off the beach, in much higher numbers than I've
seen at this location over the past 2 weeks.

Good birding,

Yeah Peter,
I found the bird and did not have any books with us. I see it has a lot of
white on the top of the primaries and am now unsure as to it being a
Thayers and leaning towards Kumlien's. Checking through Peterson's gulls as
we speak. There are photos of the birds eye in that folder.

[nysbirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk at Calverton

2013-01-08 Thread Anthony Collerton
Had a light phase Rough-legged Hawk at Calverton this afternoon, initially
post hunting but later soaring over the grassland. It was visible from
Rt25 just West of Parker Road (I did not go in to the airfield).

At Hulce Landing Road there were 191 Horned Larks (and nothing with them as
far as I could see). The sparrow flocks at the North end of the road were
mostly in the brussels sprouts field so I couldn't get too close but I did
see 1 Vesper and 1 White-crowned Sparrow (among many White-throated and
Song Sparrows and a few Dark-eyed Juncos) as they moved around.

was a Wood Duck and a few Am Wigeon.

We then tried the Lake as viewed from Merrick blvd, and a male Eur

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher Clay-colored Sparrow--NO

2013-01-08 Thread John Gluth
I put in 2.5 hours at Heckscher State Park this morning (8:00-10:30) looking
for the Clay-colored Sparrow found by Arie Gilbert yesterday.
Starting at field 6 I traveled east as far as the RC model plane airfield.
Other than a flock of ~50 Juncos near the airfield I saw few sparrows
until I was 2 hours in and had returned to the vicinity of the pool complex.
There I encountered 8-9 American Tree Sparrows along the east fence
of the pool, followed by the real mother lode--a flock of 25-30 Tree Sparrows,
6-7 Field Sparrows and 4 outlying Savannah Sparrows--on the west side
of the pool. I followed and carefully observed that flock for 20-25 minutes but
never saw the Clay-colored. The visit was not without rewards though,
as both White-winged and Red Crossbills were seen as were my FOY Killdeer and
Great Egret.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Baltimore Oriole

2013-01-08 Thread Cesar Castillo
Dear all,

Was birding Kissena Park today and I heard what I thought was a Baltimore
Oriole.  I was not able to find the bird as it got quiet when a Sharp shinned
hawk was also drawn to the sound.  The location was the same spot where I last
saw an Oriole and photographed it on November 4th.  Might be the same bird.
Hopefully someone else can find it too.
Attached is a map with a red circle over the area where I heard the bird today.

This looks like a Iceland Gull to me. Thayer's should be a darker
gray and usually with a dark iris. Does the observer have any notes
on the color of the orbital ring and primary pattern?

Yeah Peter,
I found the bird and did not have any books with us. I see it has a lot of
white on the top of the primaries and am now unsure as to it being a
Thayers and leaning towards Kumlien's. Checking through Peterson's gulls as
we speak. There are photos of the birds eye in that folder.

Thanks Bill

Shawn Billerman

Re: [nysbirds-l] Possible Thayers Gull Jones Beach WE2 1-8-13

2013-01-08 Thread Andrew Baksh
Thanks Bill for posting the link, I enjoyed going through your photos and
videos.

I agree with Peter Post's comments. In fact, this bird looks like the *
Kumlien's* I reported from Jones Beach West End II on January 1st??
Although...the legs of the bird in your photos seems a bit more saturated
and the head on your bird in some of your photos does not give that
gentle expression that I remember from the Jan 1st bird.

Here is a link to the Jan 1st bird with a few photos
