[nysbirds-l] 60 Seals and 1 Cormorant...from inlet to inlet.

2013-01-25 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Taking advantage of today's "warm spell", at 2:00 PM, I headed down to Dune Rd.
and Cupsogue Co. Pk., in the hope of crossing paths with a Red Crossbill. After
checking the pines w/o the park's parking lot, I decided to continue on to
Moriches Inlet, trying for some of the wintering species I've missed this
season, e.g., Red-necked Grebe and some of the uncommon alcids. This fairly
long walk (out & back) was short on birds, but at least provided the neat sight
of ~ 60 seals, hauled out on the sand bar nearest the inlet. The drive east to
Shinnicock Inlet was also very quiet, except for the Great Cormorant that was
preening on the w/s light tower.
Cheers,Bob

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Ramble 1/25, European Goldfinch

2013-01-25 Thread Ed Gaillard
The highlight of a chilly walk through the Ramble this morning was a
European Goldfinch at Maintenance meadow, hanging out with a group of
5 House Finches. He sat peacefully with them and flew out when they
did.
Photos here :

No bands that I saw. I wonder if he's the same individual I saw
several times last spring along the Gill.

Also, three Red-Tailed Hawks at Evodia, one juvenile and two adults.
I think I've seen this group of hawks several times recently; the
adults frequently on the ground or poking around in low brush, as they
were today, with the juvenile sitting up in a tree and remaining
behind when the adults move along.

Otherwise, the usual suspects. American Goldfinches almost as
numerous as the Titmousoi today.

Good birding,
Ed Gaillard

[nysbirds-l] Trumpeter, Yaphank, Suffolk co

2013-01-25 Thread Peter Priolo
The lone individual of the disturbed pair is currently in the pond in Yaphank
sitting on ice. It's neck near head is fairly rusty/buffy as if steeped like
tea perhaps from tannic water.
