[nysbirds-l] Spring Migrants @ Breezy Point Queens...

2013-03-31 Thread Andrew Baksh
I visited Breezy Point today to do some spring shorebird reconnaissance and
had the following notables: PIPING PLOVERS (3), EASTERN PHOEBES (2) -
finally my FOS (first of the season) in Queens, American Oystercatchers
(17), Sanderling (240) and Dunlin (3). In a first for me at Breezy Tip, I
had 5 KILLDEERS roaming around where there used to be dunes.

Out on the ocean, a handful of Northern Gannetts were seen, all adults. No
massive staging of waterfowl, with only a smattering of Long-tailed Ducks.
I guess I missed the big staging??

While I fully expected the devastation to mirror what I had earlier in the
year observed at Fort Tilden, it was still shocking to see that there are
no more dunes at Breezy. Some photos of what the beach looks like post
Hurricane Sandy are posted along with a few birds from today.

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Connetquot River State Park (CRSP) Birds (Suffolk Co.)

2013-03-31 Thread ken feustel
A morning's walk at CRSP yielded some early spring migrants and some lingering
winter birds. Highlights included a slightly early Northern Rough-winged
Swallow flying over the lower pond and, on the other end of the migratory
spectrum, an adult Iceland (Kumlien's) Gull in the lower pond with Herring and
Great Black-backed Gulls. Pine Warblers were poorly represented, with only two
being noted in a park where they commonly breed. Eastern Phoebe (1) was back on
territory, as well as Eastern Bluebird (3) at nest boxes. A few Rusty
Blackbirds were heard singing in the wet woods.

Heading east, a drive along Dune Road was quiet, with the only birds of note
the numerous Great Egrets (23) and one Eastern Phoebe. There were good numbers
of all three Scoters at Shinnecock Inlet and Cupsogue, the numbers exceeding
anything we had observed at Montauk this winter. However, the estimate of a
thousand scoters (in order of abundance Black, Surf, and White-winged of those
that were identifiable) pales in comparison to other years.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park Queens 3-30...

2013-03-31 Thread Andrew Baksh
Not a single warbler seen or heard despite a long walk through the woods
covering most of the Kaplan Trail and Kettle holes. Of note were several Hairy
Woodpeckers, American Goldfiches (some coming into nice color) and a flock of
15 Rusty Blackbirds.

Perhaps, the best sight towards the evening was what I think to be a, Little
Brown Bat that I thought was out a little too early, but seemed okay using
echolocation to pick off insects near the handball courts. I managed a few
photos which I will post to my blog for anyone interested in taking a look.
Still looking for that 1st Phoebe at Alley.

Good Easter Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Inwood Hill Park sightings.

2013-03-31 Thread Nadir Souirgi
The park was notably quiet today. A long meandering walk, including
the ball fields along the river, had one Eastern Phoebe and one Osprey
moving north up high along the river. Numbers for expected species at
this time seemed very low, especially for White-throated Sparrow and
American Robin. Of note was a Canada Goose with a yellow neck band
labled "RY87". It also had a silver band around the right tarsus to
worn to read. I reported the sighting to the USGS website and am
awaiting a reply. There was also one Canada Goose that looked like a
possible "Richardson's" Cackling, though I'm sure Lesser CAGO is more
likely. The bill was relatively blunt, conical, though longer than I
expected. It was also the smallest goose in the flock, short legged,
and uniformly pale gray breasted up to the neck, I asked around but
only got one response as a negative for Richardson's. They are
probably right. Still, as this species was reported recently from the
area I thought I would allow others to weigh in on this bird for
themselves, either positively or negatively. Here is a link to my
nascent flickr page with some images that I digi-binned using my
phone.

May the winds soon change in our favor,
