[nysbirds-l] Forest Park Pine Warblers

2013-04-03 Thread Cesar Castillo

I decided to go look for those birds of interest posted on ebird recently at
Forest Park, no luck, however I ran across some Pine Warblers (at least 4) and
many Eastern Phoebes (5-6).  Also a pair of Golden-crowned Kinglets high in the
trees.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 4/2 & 4/3

2013-04-03 Thread Tom Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City
Wed. 3 April, 2013

It's the lull in spring migration here; at least it seems more departure than
arrival is taking place in the past few days. In a walk (4/3) that took in the
full length of the park, fewer of certain over-wintering and migrant species
such as White-throated Sparrow were seen, which will surely be re-invigorated
as fresh migrants flow thru in weeks to come.

Even E. Phoebes are still very hard to come by 3 days into April, and (it
seems) nary a warbler... unless one wants to buy into April Fool's Day report
from Central Park.

Tuesday featured some birds headed north in the a.m. hours, then seen actually
turning around & flying south again as they reached the n. end. This can be a
"morning flight" sort of phenomenon but it sure looked like a few of the birds
could've been thinking, why did I leave s. Texas for the frost of the
northeast...

Warmer days coming...

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [ebirdsnyc] Alley Pond Park Queens 3-30...

2013-04-03 Thread Andrew Baksh
Not a field report, but I felt it important to share, for those us who bird
Forest Park in Queens. It is bad enough we have to deal with the nefarious
activities that take place unabated near the water hole in Forest Park.
Now, birders will have to be extra careful when birding in the park,
especially women who bird alone. I suggest to bird the park in small
groups and always remain alert to what takes place nearby. See below the
e-mail that was sent to me and posted to eBirds regarding a female jogger
being attacked in Forest Park Queens. Thanks to Mr. O'brien who brought
this to my attention.

Not a single warbler seen or heard despite a long walk through the woods
covering most of the Kaplan Trail and Kettle holes. Of note were several
Hairy Woodpeckers, American Goldfiches (some coming into nice color) and a
flock of 15 Rusty Blackbirds.

Perhaps, the best sight towards the evening was what I think to be a,
Little Brown Bat that I thought was out a little too early, but seemed okay
using echolocation to pick off insects near the handball courts. I managed
a few photos which I will post to my blog for anyone interested in taking a
look. Still looking for that 1st Phoebe at Alley.

Good Easter Birding!

Subject: [JERSEYBI] Forsythe Wildlife Drive to reopen weekends only
 Reply-To: Don Freiday peregrin...@hotmail.com

 Hi all,

I suspect many will be interested in the following information. Edwin B.
Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge's Wildlife Drive will be reopening weekends
only beginning this weekend. The official press announcement from the refuge
 is below.

Unfortunately, the Snow Geese have pretty much pulled out for the year but
the Ospreys are back, and on the drive just now there were Glossy Ibis, both
yellowlegs, Great and Snowy Egrets, one Bald Eagle, and quite a bit of
 miscellaneous waterfowl.

 Best,

Forsythe Refuge Wildlife Drive to Reopen on Weekends

Galloway, N.J. – After almost 3 months of construction and over 2,000 dump
truck loads of fill, the popular Wildlife Drive at Edwin B. Forsythe National
Wildlife Refuge in Galloway is set to reopen on weekends beginning Saturday,
April 4. The 8-mile Wildlife Drive traverses marshland and forest, and is the
most popular destination on the refuge, with over 100,000 visitors in a
 normal year.

Hurricane Sandy created large holes in the top and sides of the Wildlife
Drive, which has been closed since last October. Reconstruction began on
January 14, and is rapidly nearing completion.

“We’re delighted to be opening the Wildlife Drive on weekends now that spring
and its migrating birds are here,” said refuge manager Virginia Rettig. “It
won’t be long before we can open the drive every day, but there is still
construction work occurring during the week.”

The Federal Highway Administration funded the repair work through the
Emergency Relief to Federally Owned Roads program. Wagman Construction, Inc.
based out of York, PA has been the contractor on the job.

The Wildlife Drive will be open from sunrise to sunset on weekends only. The
Refuge Visitor Information Center is open 10 to 3 during the week and 9 to 4
on weekends. All admission fees to the refuge have been temporarily waived
 until the repairs are complete.

Updates on refuge status may be found on the refuge Facebook page,
http://www.facebook.com/ForsytheNWR . For more information, contact the
 refuge at (609) 652-1665 or visit www.fws.gov/northeast/forsythe/ .

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 4/2 4/3

Tuesday featured some birds headed north in the a.m. hours, then seen actually
turning around flying south again as they reached the n. end. This can be a
morning flight sort of phenomenon but it sure looked like a few of the birds
could've been thinking, why did I leave s. Texas for the frost of the
northeast...

Warmer days coming...

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Forest Park Pine Warblers

2013-04-03 Thread Cesar Castillo

I decided to go look for those birds of interest posted on ebird recently at
Forest Park, no luck, however I ran across some Pine Warblers (at least 4) and
many Eastern Phoebes (5-6).  Also a pair of Golden-crowned Kinglets high in the
trees.
