[nysbirds-l] Ruffs found at the Timber Point County Club County LI...Some Photos Posted...

2013-04-13 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have posted a few photos of the RUFFS from today here (
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/04/ruff-day-on-long-island.html).

For those who cannot find or don't know where the location is. Here is a
link to a map of Timber Point County Club Golf Course
LI,
which should also provide directions.

The birds were seen at the East Marina marsh, which can be accessed via the
East Marina Access Road, you take it to the end. There is parking there but
be aware that the lot, is also used by visitors and boat owners and can get
filled up.

I should not have to, but I will mention it anyway. PLEASE, observe the
rules of the location and do not venture out into the marsh or wander
around on the golf course. Birders are NOT frowned upon by the golf course
administrators and we would like to keep it that way.

Many thanks to Michael McBrien and his dad for the 1st RUFF find and to
Shai Mitra, Patricia Lindsay, Dale Dancis, Diana Teta and John Gluth who
kept me company throughout the day as I studied and documented the 1st and
then second RUFF that John and I found.

Good Shorebirding (say what!)

Re:[nysbirds-l] 2nd Ruff at the Timber Point C.C.

2013-04-13 Thread John Gluth
After a years-long scarcity of Ruffs in NY, it's remarkable to have 6 in
consecutive years downstate alone (4 last year at Jamaica Bay's East Pond and
the two today). Even more so considering that Timberpoint is hardly a shorebird
hotspot. Another great find by Michael McBrien and a serendipitous find of the
second bird by Andrew and I later.
Four passable digiscoped photos (embedded in eBird checklist) of both Ruffs can
be viewed here: http://ebird.org/ebird/ny/view/checklist?subID=S13734917

Both Ruffs (1 could be a Reeve or Faeder type) are still here as I am
about to leave. Last observed with Jessica and her mom Karen and
Mike. Patience is required to see these birds as they tend to
disappear into the marsh for long periods.

Other notables included, Least Sandpiper, Willet and a Spotted
Sandpiper (seen by others). A flock of Boat-tailed Grackles this far
inland is worthy of mention as well,

The Black Brandt continues here at Timber Point as well.

[nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: Morning waterbird flight

2013-04-13 Thread Angus Wilson
There was a good eastward push of waterbirds, principally loons and gannets
along the Atlantic coast this morning. A 90 minute count from East Hampton
(Suffolk Co.) tallied 2,383 Red-throated Loons, 735 Common Loons, 119 loon
sp., 901 scoter (all 3 sp.) and 466 Northern Gannets. Other highlights
included 67 Razorbills, many in alternate plumage, 4 Red-necked Grebes, 6
Blue-winged Teal and 12 Great Cormorants. Forty-one Long-tailed Ducks was a
good showing from the oceanside of the peninsula, all in their dark
alternate plumage. Later I found a tight raft of 90 Long-tailed Ducks at
Montauk Point, where there was little activity beyond a flyby male
Harlequin Duck.

Early this morning I headed to Kissena Park to check out the marshes by the
lake.  Last night (4/12 at around 7PM) I saw a Marsh wren there and a possible
moorhen or something similar.  Did not refind the
birds this morning (4/13)but I did see a Louisiana waterthrush (ID confirmed
by salmony colour and very white superciliums).  This bird was located on the
slope overlooking the lake and marsh.  The bird then flew into the marshy area
where I had seen and heard the Marsh Wren. No warblers at Kissena.
I moved on to Oakland lake where it was very warbly.   I saw a Palm and right
behind it was the Louisiana
Waterthrush.  I though great, a second one for the day and I didnt have to
look too hard to refind this one.  I also encounteredPine, and Yellow-rumped.
Near the water inlet (the stream that feeds the lake) I encountered a second
Lousiana, third of the day surrounded by a few swamp sparrows.  Took my time
trying to get photos, while watching this one a third (fourth of the day) flew
in about three yards away. Wood ducks flew in over my head into the ravine as
this was happening.
After a while I kept walking again and ran into Eric Miller who was looking at
his own Louisiana Waterthrush (5th of the day, 4th at Oakland) by the staircase
on the western shore of the lake.  He also helped me find my FOY Blue-grey
gnatcatcher, and FOY blue-winged teal pair.  Soon I was joined by more birders
(Gary, Bob, Seth, Mary, Steve S.  and Arie).  We all got more good looks at a
Louisiana near the entrance to the park (where I saw the first Louisiana in
this park).  News came of a Ruff in breeding plumage somewhere out on the
Island and most everyone left.  I stayed behind and found my FOY Yellow
Warbler.Moved on to Alley Pond Environmental Center to find my FOY Barn

[nysbirds-l] Purple Finch continues at Hoyt Farm

2013-04-13 Thread John Gluth
The male Purple Finch was still present at Hoyt Farm Park in Commack (Suffolk
Co.) this morning. I had to wait 20-25 minutes before it made its first
appearance, so some patience is required.
Migrant presence elsewhere in the park was relatively light, but I did find 1
Eastern Phoebe, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and 8-10 Golden-crowned Kinglets.

[nysbirds-l] Free Bird Migration Documentary, NY locations

2013-04-13 Thread Childs, Jackson
Hi,

I'm posting this with the permission of the NYSbirds-L Listowner. I've put a
free documentary online about neo-tropical bird migration. Some of it was
filmed in NY, including the Adirondacks and Sterling Forest State Park, so NY
birders might be interested. To see the movie go here:
http://gulfcrossingmovie.com (again, it's completely free forever). Some of
this video was shown on CBS Sunday Morning a couple months ago.

All the best,

[nysbirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrushy day Oakland lake Queens NY

2013-04-13 Thread Cesar Castillo
Early this morning I headed to Kissena Park to check out the marshes by the
lake.  Last night (4/12 at around 7PM) I saw a Marsh wren there and a possible
moorhen or something similar.  Did not refind the birds this morning (4/13)but
I did see a Louisiana waterthrush (ID confirmed by salmony colour and very
white superciliums).  This bird was located on the slope overlooking the lake
and marsh.  The bird then flew into the marshy area where I had seen and heard
the Marsh Wren. No warblers at Kissena.

I moved on to Oakland lake where it was very warbly.   I saw a Palm and right
behind it was the Louisiana Waterthrush.  I though great, a second one for the
day and I didnt have to look too hard to refind this one.  I also encountered
Pine, and Yellow-rumped.

Near the water inlet (the stream that feeds the lake) I encountered a second
Lousiana, third of the day surrounded by a few swamp sparrows.  Took my time
trying to get photos, while watching this one a third (fourth of the day) flew
in about three yards away.
Wood ducks flew in over my head into the ravine as this was happening.

Soon I was joined by more birders (Gary, Bob, Seth, Mary, Steve S.  and Arie).
We all got more good looks at a Louisiana near the entrance to the park (where
I saw the first Louisiana in this park).  News came of a Ruff in breeding
plumage somewhere out on the Island and most everyone left.  I stayed behind
and found my FOY Yellow Warbler.
Moved on to Alley Pond Environmental Center to find my FOY Barn swallows with
Tree Swallows.

2013-04-13 Thread Andrew Baksh
Both Ruffs (1 could be a Reeve or Faeder type) are still here as I am
about to leave. Last observed with Jessica and her mom Karen and
Mike. Patience is required to see these birds as they tend to
disappear into the marsh for long periods.

Other notables included, Least Sandpiper, Willet and a Spotted
Sandpiper (seen by others). A flock of Boat-tailed Grackles this far
inland is worthy of mention as well,

The Black Brandt continues here at Timber Point as well.

[nysbirds-l] Timber Point

2013-04-13 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
I want to thank all who answered my query concerning the location of the
Timber Point GC. I would have acknowledged your responses earlier but I
was out to dinner. (Not out to lunch. :)

[nysbirds-l] Ruffs found at the Timber Point County Club County LI...Some Photos Posted...

2013-04-13 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have posted a few photos of the RUFFS from today here (
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/04/ruff-day-on-long-island.html).

For those who cannot find or don't know where the location is. Here is a
link to a map of Timber Point County Club Golf Course
LIhttps://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8q=Timber+Point+Country+Club+Golf+Coursefb=1gl=ushq=Timber+Point+Country+Club+Golf+Coursecid=0,0,9483299234849214049ei=Rh9qUffKLNji4AP2wYH4Bgved=0CIkBEPwSMAA,
which should also provide directions.

Good deeds do get rewarded (sometimes)? While helping John Gluth to
look for the Ruff earlier found by Michael McBrien, we just found a
2nd Ruff or maybe Reeve. Looking at it now and trying to document the
  sighting.
