In addition to the OCBC's, and seeing him in the field, I have Paul to thank for my only trip to Robbins Island (he wanted to show something to Gil Raynor, and extended the invitation to me). While there, I saw my 1st Osprey nest which wasn't up in the air on a pole, etc., but rather on top of a huge boulder. The last time I saw Paul was down in Eastport, looking at the Black-tailed Godwit, found by another wonderful man & birder, Paul Gillen. In fact, there were a trio of " birding" Pauls there at the same time that day, the 3rd being the holder of many NYS birding records, Paul Buckley. I'm certain many of you on this listserve know Paul and might be interested in Jon's message re: honoring Paul. Cheers, Bob -- Forwarded message -- From: Date: Thu, May 23, 2013 at 7:49 PM Subject: [NFBirds Report 1803] Paul Stoutenburgh Preserve To: north-fork-bi...@googlegroups.com Those of you who are regulars at the Town's Arshamomaque Pond Preserve in Southold are probably aware that the Town renamed the preserve in honor of Paul Stoutenburgh a couple months back. The Town is having a formal to ceremony to honor Paul on June 13th at the preserve. See below for the invite they sent out. I would have to guess that most members of this group know at least a little about Paul and his dedication to nature and the environment on the East End. If not, here's a quick run down of what I know about him. He was the compiler of the Orient Christmas Bird Count for 27 years, a long time and charter participant in the Central Suffolk CBC, a regular participant in other East End CBCs, the local Winter Waterfowl counter for years, the author of Focus On Nature articles for the Suffolk Times for some 40 years or so and he helped with the Moore's Woods trail system developed in the early 1970s that many of us still walk to this day. I'm sure there's lots more but that's more than enough to prove he deserves a local preserve to be named after him in my book. >From what I've been told his health will not allow him to attend the ceremony but his family will be there so I hope we can get a good contingent of members of this group to attend the ceremony and show our appreciation for Paul and what he's done for nature, the environment and us. ** * * * * * **Paul Stoutenburgh Preserve * * * In honor of environmentalist and former Town Councilman *Paul Stoutenburgh* Please join Supervisor Scott A. [nysbirds-l] Wertheim NWR (Suffolk Co.) Yellow-throated Warbler
At 8:15 or so this morning I heard a Yellow-throated Warbler singing along the Black Tupelo trail at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. I was pretty certain of the ID from the song but as I don't see these guys every day I hung around until I could get a look at it. I heard it again on my way back out, sometime after 9am. It was moving around, but it was roughly 200 yards north of the point where the trail takes a right turn at a gate. I started the day shortly after dawn nearby at Smith Point, where I counted 28 Sooty Shearwaters in a brief seawatch. Also interesting to me were about 40 Black Scoters, a White-crowned Sparrow, and my first Killdeer chick of the year.
