[nysbirds-l] East Pond - Jamaica Bay
I birded the pond along with Michael Yuan, Paige Linden Brams and Chris ? (Sorry Chris, I did mention that I was really bad at names). There were very very few shorebirds there just after high tide this afternoon. Numbers were about as follows: North End; 25 Short-billed dowitchers 5 Greater Yellowlegs 15 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Spotted Sandpiper 3 Least Sandpiper 5 Semi-palmated Sandpiper 4 American Oystercatchers South End: 12 short-billed Dowitchers 10 Greater Yellowlegs 4 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper 2 Semi-palmated Sandpiper To sum it up this was by far the worst shorebird numbers I've ever seen in July. The west pond had 1 Greater Yellowlegs and nothing else. [nysbirds-l] Rails in Ulster Co 7-11-13
A group of us went up to Great Vly Swamp in Ulster co., where a King Rail had been reported in the recent past. We did not see or hear it. But we did have killer looks at several Virginia Rails and at a most accommodating Sora. Thanks to Jeff, Curt, and Peter for help with getting to this location. For future reference the location is here. http://goo.gl/maps/l5yeG Arie Gilbert North Babylon, NY WWW.Powerbirder.blogspot.com WWW.qcbirdclub.org - Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 2013.0.3349 / Virus Database: 3204/6485 - Release Date: 07/12/13 -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx-Turtle Cove and Vicinity
On a relatively cool mid-afternoon walk to Turtle Cove and the edge alongside the Orchard Beach parking lot, I was surprised to find more than a dozen Killdeer. There were also more than a dozen Cedar Waxwings landing and feeding on something very low on the glasswort in Turtle Cove. I assume they were hawking insects, as there are no berries. Killdeer 12 Cedar Waxwings 12+ Snowy Egret 11 Great Egrets 2 Black-crowned Night Heron 3 Song Sparrow Chipping Sparrow 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker Osprey (with fish in talons) Marsh Wren (several popping up all along the marsh) Red-winged Blackbirds 30+ (flocks of females flying all around the marsh) Barn Swallow Northern Flicker 2 Mourning Dove European Starling 60+ American Robin 25+ Canada Goose 10 Herring Gull 8 Greater Black-backed Gull 2 Pelham Bay Park, Bronx 12:30 PM, approximately 75 degrees and breezy Jack Rothman www.cityislandbirds.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
