[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe Fire Island Hawkwatch

2013-09-18 Thread Shaibal Mitra
A Say's Phoebe made a very brief appearance at the Fire Island hawkwatch around
9:00, first detected by Tony Tierno, and immediately enjoyed by all on hand:
Trudy Battaly, Billy Hanley, Norm Klein, Drew Panko, me--and VIP Andy Baldelli,
for whom it was a state bird! (Andy's been out of state for a while.)

After watching it for a few seconds, I left it under their care while I ran
back to get my scope. Unfortunately, it began bouncing westward almost
immediately, and despite Andy's and my vigorous efforts, we lost it along the
median.

Other highlights included a nice hawk flight, a notable influx of Savannah
Sparrows, a late Orchard Oriole, a late-ish Cliff Swallow, and a double-V of
Double-crested Cormorants, with each group being led by an immature Great
Cormorant.

We checked Captree afterward, almost expecting to find a visibly different
Say's Phoebe there, but dipped of course.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Central Park Sept. 18

2013-09-18 Thread Thomas Fiore
(Manhattan, N.Y. City)

To Joe G's CP listing, I'd briefly add that from the north end of the
park, another round of Yellow-shafted Flickers went through, with at
least 300 (twice the number counted a day earlier at the same early
a.m. hour just at and before sunrise) moving across the n. end
airspace and to the SW, headed out of the park - then, in a 90-minute
rapid recon. of n. end areas, a goodly number (25+) in just one site,
the small meadowed area at the SE upper edges of the Great Hill, plus
dozens more of flickers - an indicator of strong nocturnal flight also
having passed - and a few other highlights, such as a Yellow-billed
Cuckoo in the Loch, plus modest warbler numbers in various areas, with
the highlight for me a male-plumaged Hooded Warbler along the "ridge"
trail that overlooks the meer from the north woods, also Tennessee +
other warbler spp. in that same area. Also discernible were a goodly
number of icterids, most seeming to be Common Grackles, but a
smattering of Bobolinks "pinking" out of the compost area as trucks
(workers) came in, & some Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed
Cowbirds in the area as well. As to White-throated Sparrows, a small
number have been around a while, & a miniscule number were in both
Central & Riverside Parks in summer, that is "bird" summer, back in
June & July: those assumed as in other summers in Manhattan, to be
just that, summering, and NOT breeding birds. Also a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker in the north end, and I noted a few more vocal White-
breasted Nuthatches around than I had been aware of lately - before
this fall.

good end-of-summer birding!

[nysbirds-l] Broad-winged Hawks on the move

2013-09-18 Thread Allan J. Michelin
While enjoying Fall warblers this morning at Peach Hill in the town of
Poughkeepsie on a Waterman Bird Club outing, we all experienced an
amazing flight of Broad-winged Hawks. They came in waves, at times
kettling above us low enough that binoculars were not needed to count
the bands on their tails. During a period of perhaps 35 minutes we
counted 118 BWHA on their journey south. This is by far the largest
number of BWHA I've seen in one day in Dutchess Co. Some of the warblers
were Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, Prairie, Magnolia, Common
Yellowthroat.

2013-09-18 Thread Andrew Baksh
I got a call from Andy Ballideli reporting a Say's Phoebe seen earlier
near the Robert Moses Hawk Watch Platform.

I believe a search is underway to see if it dropped into the median
anywhere near the area.
