[nysbirds-l] California Pelagics 2013

2013-10-16 Thread julian hough
For anyone interested, I've posted some photos and a trip list from a pelagic
several CT birders did off the West Coast recently. In addition to the regular
trips run by Debi Shearwater, we took a trip out of Half Moon Bay, near San
Francisco run by Alvaro Jaramillo. I highly recommend these trips as an
addition, or an alternative to the Monterey Bay trips, which were unimpressive
(by CA standards) during our visit. Alvaro runs a fun and informative trip and
it seems most of the better birds were seen out of Half Moon Bay this fall,
including rarities that consisted of at least two Great Shearwaters and a Manx
Shearwater - being from the East, two species not likely to get our adrenalin
going!
He plans to run some back to back trips in the future, primarily for East coast
birders that make the trek out west and want to maximize their pelagic birding.
Enjoy!

[nysbirds-l] Buffalo Brown Booby

2013-10-16 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Has anyone seen the Brown Booby today? Has anyone even looked for it? Even
if you tried for it and did not see it, people would appreciate knowing
that, especially those who have not seen it yet.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Kissena Park Queens Notable Birds...

2013-10-16 Thread Andrew Baksh
A 1st winter *BLUE GROSBEAK* found on Sunday, continued today near a weedy
area just off the wood chip path that leads towards Flushing Hospital. The
bird was favoring the seeds of what appeared to be Lambs Quarters near a
huge patch of Mugwort.

Near that same area, I observed and photographed an *ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER*,
which moved back and forth near the area described above and another weedy
patch west of the path just near the turn.

Other notables included Field Sparrow and SCARLET TANAGER the latter
flagged in eBird due to I presume the date. Indigo Buntings and other more
expected birds were in decent numbers but the lack and diversity of
Sparrows was found to be lacking.

Some photos of the aforementioned birds are posted here

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Birding

2013-10-16 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date: Oct. 16, 2013

The NYC Audubon Wednesday birding group recorded 41 species in a birdie
Central Park. The highlights were 6 warbler species (Yel-rumps, Palm,
Parula, BT Blue, Ovenbird, Cape May), 5 duck species (Wood, Mallard,
Green-winged
Teal, N.Shoveler, Galwall- all found in Turtle Pond), RT Hummingbird. Many
Sapsuckers were drilling wells and keeping the warblers happy. Numbers of
White-throated Sparrows were very high with Chipping, Swamp and Song also
seen.

[nysbirds-l] Picture of Brown Booby

2013-10-16 Thread Richard Tkachuck
Hi:
My wife and I edit a couple of birding newsletters in NY and are wondering
if there is someone who has taken a picture of the Brown Booby and would
let us use it. Credit would be given.

Thanks,
