I have compiled from all the e-mails sent on the subject of the killing of
Snowy Owls at JFK, a list of the resources a number of you submitted.  The list
can be accessed here
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/12/nyc-kills-snowy-owls-while-boston-saves.html

This way, it is easier than wading through e-mail threads.  It covers phone
numbers to the online petition link.  If anyone has any other resources to add,
please e-mail me and I will add it to the list.

Also, if anyone has already penned a letter to the Governor and would be
willing to share their format as a template, I would gladly add it.  This will
help those who are too busy to craft one themselves.

Keep up the pressure y'all!

Cheers!

Plum Island: The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful
with John Turner
Wednesday, December 11, 2013
7:00pm
Cold Spring Harbor Library

What's with the hoopla over Plum Island lately?
There has been much focus and effort over the past several years to
"save" Plum Island, situated off the North Fork of Long Island, with
efforts really heating up recently.   With over 200 bird species (204 as of
December 6th's survey!) recorded using the island for breeding, wintering or
migratory stopover
purposes, and playing host as the largest seal haul-out site in southern New
England, over 80% of  Plum Island is critical wildlife habitat.
This program will cover the major cultural and natural features of the
Island that so many environmentalists, through the Preserve Plum Island
Coalition, are working to protect through the creation of a National
Wildlife Refuge or an equivalent conservation outcome.

>From the old rumors of two headed cows to the new rumors of "The
Donald" wanting to build a golf course on the island, Plum Island has
always been shrouded in controversy.  Join us tonight as we hear the
truth about this beautiful island, and why conservationists are putting their
hearts and souls into saving it!

For more details and to see our other upcoming programs, field trips and
activities please visit our website.

[nysbirds-l] Pressure = results...1st step...

2013-12-09 Thread Andrew Baksh
Results from the pressure. Birder Mike Shanley just posted a press release
from Port Authority to Facebook.

December 9, 2013

CONTACT: Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
212-435-

STATEMENT FROM THE PORT AUTHORITY ON SNOWY OWLS

“The Port Authority is working with the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation to move immediately toward implementing a
program to trap and relocate snowy owls that pose a threat to aircraft at
JFK and LaGuardia airports. The Port Authority’s goal is to strike a
balance in humanely controlling bird populations at and around the agency’s
airports to safeguard passengers on thousands of aircrafts each day. Over
the past two weeks, five planes at JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia
airports were struck by snowy owls that have been migrating to our region
in far higher than typical numbers this year.”

Founded in 1921, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey builds,
operates, and maintains many of the most important transportation and trade
infrastructure assets in the country. The agency’s network of aviation,
ground, rail, and seaport facilities is among the busiest in the country,
supports more than 550,000 regional jobs, and generates more than $23
billion in annual wages and $80 billion in annual economic activity. The
Port Authority also owns and manages the 16-acre World Trade Center site,
where construction crews are building the iconic One World Trade Center,
which is now the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The Port
Authority receives no tax revenue from either the State of New York or New
Jersey or from the City of New York. The agency raises the necessary funds
for the improvement, construction or acquisition of its facilities
primarily on its own credit. For more information, please visit

Port Authority 'wildlife specialists' hunt snowy owls at New York
City's airports

Whooodunit? Snowy owls, apparently. After one was sucked into an
airplane turbine, the species has been added to a list of birds that
'wildlife specialists' kill to protect planes from bird strikes.

I did call the NYC phone # given this morning in order to register my
sentiments re: Snowy Owls being shot at JFK. The call was routed to Albany
where is was kindly and carefully explained to me that this issue needs to be
addressed by the public in writing, hard copy, snail mail if it is ever going
to reach the agency (DEC) that will most likely address it. The woman said
that one should also request a reply with contact info. so that you can follow
up if you want to.

I asked about e-mailing and the woman said the way the system worked in Albany
it should only be hard copy. They scan them into their system and then send all
letters regarding a particular issue on the the agency that will most likely
address it. She explained if it is not done by hard copy your complaints will
enter a big black hole. For what it's worththis is
the address I was given.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Larry Federman
Audubon New York and NYC Audubon’s Executive Directors “sent a letter to the
Port Authority Executive Director (Pat Foye) and JFK’s General Manager. We have
also alerted Governor Cuomo’s Office (the PA is jointly controlled by NY and
NJ) and the DEC as to our position.”

Our chapter network’s leaders have been alerted as well.

Thx everyone. Let’s keep the pressure on!

Hi,
I just called the number for PA Media Relations Office.
The woman who answered asked me if I was a member of the media. When I said no,
she gave me the info # for the PA, (212-435-7000), but none of the options seem
to pertain to our kind of concern.
The rep I spoke to at Gov. Cuomo's office told me she has been getting lots of
calls and took my zip code along with my complaint.

All

I just contacted the number below and was told it is the 'media
relations' dept. They only field calls from Media organizations

The person there however gave me this alternate contact info;

Ian Van Praagh, 212-435-6938

I called and left a message.

Please do so as well, and please pass along to other listserves.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Jennifer Clark
I just called and the woman who took my comment said that if the
governor would take a stand on the issue, it would be reported on the
front page of his website:http://www.governor.ny.gov/
I also see his Twitter feed appears there. Perhaps it's worthwhile to
also tweet him our concerns (and with higher public visibility): @NYGovCuomo

i called the number and if you wait for option 3 (speak to an
assistant) you can leave a polite message with a real live person, as
i did. whether of course that has any impact is to be seen.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Linda Orkin
Thanks so much Alicia, I just called Barbara Lifton's office. The woman I
spoke with had just read an article this morning (Ithaca Journal?) about
these owls and their arrival so was at least informed as to the underlying
information. She is going to check out who to contact and get back to me.

I did emphasize that we were looking for humane solutions to this "problem"
and that other airports seemed to do just fine with trap and release. I
also said a Snowy that is trapped and released will not be looking to
return to that airport but would be happen in many wide open farm fields
and refuges.

I will let everyone know what I learn. I feel this can't wait.

Yes, I called too and chose option 3, to speak with an assistant. She asked
me if there was a bill number, I said no, I'm calling to register extreme
displeasure. She took my zip code. I will try some other methods also
suggested to me.

Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Seth Ausubel
I believe that any communication is helpful, despite what the person at the
contact phone number said. Two suggestions:

(1) You can contact the Port Authority directly by sending a message from their
web site at: http://www.panynj.gov/contact/contact-us.htm
(2) Contact the NYSDEC Region 2 Natural Resources Supervisor at
r2nat...@gw.dec.state.ny.us and ask them to engage with the Port Authority to
stop the practice of shooting the owls.

Begin forwarded message:

2013-12-09 Thread Linda Orkin
Thanks Betsy for this information. I think it is horrendous that such a
time sensitive and destructive issue can only be addressed by snail mail in
this day and age. I am doing as you suggest, but still urge all to flood
Cuomo's office with phone calls. (518) 474-8390

If it is not possible to arrange a catch-and-release program at JFK, would it
be possible to have the airport authorities at least provide the remains of the
owls to qualified individuals who are studying the species so that some
scientific value might be obtained?

2013-12-09 Thread Will Raup
Through being an active birder in the Albany area and now being involved in
e-bird, I've gotten to make some contact with the Air Traffic control folk at
Albany International Airport.

They are reluctant to report owls, because of situations like this.  Basically,
the Owls because of their size are a threat to airplanes taking off and
landing.  If I recall, they need to make an effort to discourage the owls from
hanging out on the runway, but if those fail, then can and do shoot the owls.
This is not limited to JFK, but can happen at any airport.

While not ideal in my mind, you will be hard pressed to find anyone, especially
in the government who would potentially risk hundreds of human lives for one,

RE: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Will Raup
Through being an active birder in the Albany area and now being involved in
e-bird, I've gotten to make some contact with the Air Traffic control folk at
Albany International Airport.

They are reluctant to report owls, because of situations like this.  Basically,
the Owls because of their size are a threat to airplanes taking off and
landing.  If I recall, they need to make an effort to discourage the owls from
hanging out on the runway, but if those fail, then can and do shoot the owls.
This is not limited to JFK, but can happen at any airport.

While not ideal in my mind, you will be hard pressed to find anyone, especially
in the government who would potentially risk hundreds of human lives for one,
two or even 3 Owls.  Its the same reason why Canada Geese are culled in many
areas.

Just another risk Snowy Owl's have to deal with when they come this far south.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls being shot at JFK

2013-12-09 Thread Nadine Scarpa
Canada Geese are culled in many areas because there are TOO MANY of them to
get rid of any other way. Boston's Logan Airport is doing catch and
release for the Snowy Owls - they bait with rodents, and catch them and
move them away from the airport.

Canada Geese are so numerous, they can take out more than just one engine
and THAT'S what takes a plane down. Here is how Logan Airport deals with
Snowy Owls:

If it is not possible to arrange a catch-and-release program at JFK, would
it be possible to have the airport authorities at least provide the remains
of the owls to qualified individuals who are studying the species so that
some scientific value might be obtained?

Yes, I called too and chose option 3, to speak with an assistant. She asked
me if there was a bill number, I said no, I'm calling to register extreme
displeasure. She took my zip code. I will try some other methods also
suggested to me.

I did emphasize that we were looking for humane solutions to this problem
and that other airports seemed to do just fine with trap and release. I
also said a Snowy that is trapped and released will not be looking to
return to that airport but would be happen in many wide open farm fields
and refuges.

I will let everyone know what I learn. I feel this can't wait.

 Hi Linda,

I can't send messages to the list from webmail, which is all I can
access from work, but if you or someone else called Assemblywoman Lifton's
office, I am *sure* you could (1) get contact fax info /or email
addresses for the proper supervising agency or agencies, so protests could
go directly to the agencies and not be delayed by the Governor's office
(and BTW, I am not at all sure the DEC *is* the correct agency); and (2)
might get Assemblywoman Lifton's staff to make some independent inquiries
of those agencies, which could have definite and quick impact on the policy
since funding decision for agencies go through the legislature. The object
is to make noise, lots of noise, not to actually change anyone's idea of
what they think would be best ...

Also, all comments should emphasize this isn't a birds vs.people
issue, that there are ways to fully protect both - again, not to persuade
the agency, but just so they can't frame it as crazy birders ignorant of
 public safety issues.

  Best -

Alicia

P.S. People should cc the governor's office AND Assemblywoman Lifton on
 anything sent to any agencies!

P.P.S. Ideally, you also want to send messages to the chairperson of
whatever committee supervises the particular agency - again, the
Assemblywoman's office can give you that information.

I also see his Twitter feed appears there. Perhaps it's worthwhile to
also tweet him our concerns (and with higher public visibility): @NYGovCuomo

Hi,
I just called the number for PA Media Relations Office.

Audubon New York and NYC Audubon’s Executive Directors “sent a letter to the
Port Authority Executive Director (Pat Foye) and JFK’s General Manager. We have
also alerted Governor Cuomo’s Office (the PA is jointly controlled by NY and

Our chapter network’s leaders have been alerted as well.

[nysbirds-l] Resources to use in contacting wildlife agencies and elected officials re: Snowy Owl Killings...

2013-12-09 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have compiled from all the e-mails sent on the subject of the killing of
Snowy Owls at JFK, a list of the resources a number of you submitted. The
list can be accessed here
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/12/nyc-kills-snowy-owls-while-boston-saves.html

This way, it is easier than wading through e-mail threads. It covers phone
numbers to the online petition link. If anyone has any other resources to
add, please e-mail me and I will add it to the list.

Also, if anyone has already penned a letter to the Governor and would be
willing to share their format as a template, I would gladly add it. This
will help those who are too busy to craft one themselves.

Keep up the pressure y'all!

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Go directly to the Inspector General of panynj to protect Snowy Owls

2013-12-09 Thread Rick Linda Kedenburg
Hi All, I found this address on the PA website. Maybe people can get
more done directly through the PA inspector general's office than the
regular contact protocol on their website.

 Dear Inspector General,

This is a travesty and the people authorizing this at the PA are
misinformed. Snowy Owls are loners do not fly in flocks and when
they migrate it is individually at low levels. Wake up PA they are
 no threat to aircraft!

Stop wasting our money it does nothing for safety and is like
stealing money from the taxpayers while violating common decency.

Port Authority 'wildlife specialists' hunt snowy owls at New York

Whooodunit? Snowy owls, apparently. After one was sucked into an
airplane turbine, the species has been added to a list of birds that
'wildlife specialists' kill to protect planes from bird strikes.

[nysbirds-l] Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society's Monthly Program Wednesday December 11

2013-12-09 Thread Stella Miller

Plum Island: The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful
with John Turner
Wednesday, December 11, 2013
7:00pm
Cold Spring Harbor Library

What's with the hoopla over Plum Island lately?
There has been much focus and effort over the past several years to
save Plum Island, situated off the North Fork of Long Island, with
efforts really heating up recently.

From the old rumors of two headed cows to the new rumors of The
Donald wanting to build a golf course on the island, Plum Island has
always been shrouded in controversy.  Join us tonight as we hear the
truth about this beautiful island, and why conservationists are putting their
hearts and souls into saving it!

For more details and to see our other upcoming programs, field trips and
activities please visit our website.

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 December 9, 2013

CONTACT: Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
 212-435-

STATEMENT FROM THE PORT AUTHORITY ON SNOWY OWLS

“The Port Authority is working with the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation to move immediately toward implementing a program
to trap and relocate snowy owls that pose a threat to aircraft at JFK and
LaGuardia airports. The Port Authority’s goal is to strike a balance in
humanely controlling bird populations at and around the agency’s airports to
safeguard passengers on thousands of aircrafts each day. Over the past two
weeks, five planes at JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports were struck
by snowy owls that have been migrating to our region in far higher than
 typical numbers this year.”

 Great work, everyone!
