[nysbirds-l] Feb 1st Freeport Pelagic Reminder...

2014-01-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
With permission from the list serve owners *(thank you Phil and
Chris)*. I would like to remind folks that we are still on schedule
for the Feb 1st Pelagic out of Freeport LI. However, we need 12 more
seats filled to have the numbers to sail.

Get er done folks! Don't take the chance on hand wringing over
possibly missing out on something really good. Newbies to Pelagic,
don't worry, there will be plenty of fine leaders and fellow birders
aboard, all willing to help with ID specifics etc.

See the e-mail below from Paul Guris with more details. Hope to see
you aboard, this time "coat" and all. To get you all fired up here
are a couple of links to recent See Life Paulagics reports from my
trip experience.

See Life Paulagics has scheduled a 12 hour offshore pelagic out of
Freeport, NY for Saturday, Feb 1 with the Capt. Lou Fleet. Both of
their boats are large, stable, with a big top deck, heated cabin, and
separate men's and ladies facilities. As always we'll have multiple
leaders to help find and get people on the birds.

Dovekie is one of the prime targets on this trip and the right water
temperatures for this species are currently close to shore. We just
had a dozen out of Belmar, NJ within 20 miles or so of land. On an
offshore fishing trip at the end of December out of Cape May we also
saw Dovekies, multiple Fulmars, flocks of Red Phalaropes, Kittiwakes,
and even a very late Great Shearwater! Other birds we often find on
this trip include Atlantic Puffin, Common and Thick-billed Murre,
Razorbill, Glaucous, Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, and Bonaparte's
Gulls, Black-legged Kittiwake, and numbers of Northern Gannets. We
also see nearshore birds on our way out like Common and Red-throated
Loons, all 3 scoters (White-winged tends to be further offshore than
Surf or Black), and other sea ducks.

The trip cost is $185. The boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at
roughly 6:00 PM. To make a reservation, contact us by phone at
215-234-6805 or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com.

Results and photos from past winter pelagics can be found on "Paulagic
Birding" on Facebook.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Shinnecock Inlet, East Hampton: Glaucous Gull, Snowy Owl, Tundra Swans

2014-01-21 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I drove out east today - on the west end of Shinnecock Inlet saw all 3
Scoters, Common Eiders, and a Glacous Gull a few feet away from me- I could
not find the King Eider's but I believe it's because of my inexperience
(never saw one yet) and/ or bad weather conditions. On the east end of the
inlet, there were a lot of the 3 common gulls on the jetty and saw a Snowy
Owl - as a sidenote, I got an eery feeling that I was being watched by
something - I looked into the inlet and four seals were looking at me - I
guess I've been rarely seen in the Hamptons lately : )

I looked for the Tundra Swans -found the 2 on the east side of Hook Pond -
also a Common Merganser.

I won't mention the driving experience back home.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Steller's Eider

2014-01-21 Thread Cesar Castillo
Has anyone been out to look for this bird?  Its not my place to post other
people's names so I just reduced it to initials.

Steller's Eider (Polysticta stelleri) (1)
- Reported Jan 19, 2014 16:00 by V.V.
- Point Lookout, Nassau, New York
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.587,-73.577&ll=40.587,-73.577
- Checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S1643
- Comments: "I realize this range is completely off but this is the closest in
markings to what I observed. This bird did not have a black head like a common
eider, lacked a yellow heavy beak like the king eider. It was larger with a
different head shape than a bufflehead and merganser. I was very surprised and
will try to get a photo."
