[nysbirds-l] Common Gull Photos...

2014-01-27 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have a blog post up that includes photos that should help for those who
are interested in looking for the Brooklyn Common Gull. I suggest that
visitor go prepared for VERY cold and sometimes windy conditions at
Veterans Memorial Pier in Brooklyn.

If the bird is seen again on the pier, please be vigilant of the many
visitors to the pier and try to talk them into not flushing the birds. The
few of use who were on the bird for the short time we had yesterday did
just that and were somewhat successful but not always. The Common Gull
seemed much more wary of activity than the Ring-billed Gulls and I saw how
it responded to someone (not a birder) who walked right behind the roosting
flock of birds. It immediately stood up acting nervous and left shortly
after. Hopefully, these tips help.

People who drive should also check the known Ring-billed Gull roosting
spots along the Belt Parkway. I checked several such areas after the bird
left yesterday but could not re-find it but these areas should not be
overlooked.

See the photos here -

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] South Shore from Shinnecock Inlet to Jones Inlet: Redheads, Pintails, Pipit, Snow Buntings

2014-01-27 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I drove out east and birded back going west. Highlights were:

On Ponquogue Ave, waiting for everyone to drive into the school lot, there
was a large flock of 75+ Robins eating berries in the trees

Shinnecock Inlet: was on the west side of the inlet and met a fellow birder
- I could not locate the King Eiders again - I know what to look for, but I
guess the waves made it difficult.
Saw all 3 scoters, Common Eiders and a decent amount of Bonaparte Gulls.
Saw a loon that I need to ID - probably a Common Loon but looked small.
(saw a seal again)

Patchogue Lake: (followed previous report from north side of lake by the
bridge) about 8 Pintails and 3 Redheads (2 drakes, 1 female)

Gilgo/ Cedar Beach Marina: tried looking for the Gyrfalcon but could not
locate it - found a Harrier and Pergerine Falcon instead

Jones Bach West End: did a big search but could not find the Northern
Shrike - found an American Pipt, House Finches, Horned Larks and a flock of
Snow Buntings touched down in front of me.

Good Birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] 1/18 Coney Iceland

2014-01-27 Thread Dennis Hrehowsik
It's come to my attention that Klemens Gasser spotted this immature Iceland
Gull a few hours before I reported it. I didn't know it had been seen
previously at the time. Credit where it's due.

Nice spot Klemens!

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe from Piermont Pier, Rockland Co.

2014-01-27 Thread Alan Wells
The Red-necked grebe reported by Evan Mark at Piermont Pier, Rockland Co.,
was seen at approximately 2:00 PM (1/27/2014) well out into the main channel
of the Hudson River just slightly upriver from the end of the pier. The bird
was in the scope for about a minute, but was frequently obscured by
whitecaps. I left for about 2 minutes to retrieve my camera but could not
relocate the bird when I returned. Probably still around but the high winds
and chop on the river made viewing difficult.

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Common Gull - No

2014-01-27 Thread Rob Jett
Sean Sime and I spent from 1:45pm until 3:20pm at the Veterans Memorial Pier
but never spotted the Common Gull. As a consolation prize there was a 1st year
Iceland Gull hanging around next to the pier.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Common Gull NOT SEEN, Iceland YES, Brooklyn

2014-01-27 Thread Sean Sime
>From roughly 1-3:30pm today, Rob Jett and I birded Veteran's Memorial Pier
and nearby 58th St. Pier in Brooklyn. Conditions deteriorated from sunny
and pleasant to a downright inhospitable gale.
A first year Iceland gull (same individual)was seen in both locations. The
MANY gulls over the Owl's Head treatment facility simply did not roost on
the pier or adjacent rocks as they typically do. There were a significant
number of gulls that were just too far to scope given the conditions.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe at Piermont Pier

2014-01-27 Thread Evan Mark
Rare for Rockland county a Red-necked Grebe is currently feeding and vocalizing
on the north side of the tip of the pier.
Also present this morning was a male Redhead, and two days ago a Long-tailed
Duck both locally uncommon.

[nysbirds-l] Feb 1st NY Freeport Freeport Pelagic Reminder...

2014-01-27 Thread Andrew Baksh
Hello Everyone,

I have word that this trip is in need of *4 more seats* to fill before we
have the numbers that would allow the ship to sail (not to worry, there
will be room for more). The weather forecast at the moment looks good and
for those worried about the cold, it is several degrees warmer offshore
than inland.

Let's get those seats filled and get out there because there is no telling
what really good bird (s) awaits us out there. Thanks for your time and
consideration. Below I have coped and pasted Paul Guris note about the
trip.
***

>From Paul Guris -

See Life Paulagics has scheduled a 12 hour offshore pelagic out of
Freeport, NY for Saturday, Feb 1 with the Capt. Lou Fleet. Both of
their boats are large, stable, with a big top deck, heated cabin, and
separate men's and ladies facilities. As always we'll have multiple
leaders to help find and get people on the birds.

Dovekie is one of the prime targets on this trip and the right water
temperatures for this species are currently close to shore. We just
had a dozen out of Belmar, NJ within 20 miles or so of land. On an
offshore fishing trip at the end of December out of Cape May we also
saw Dovekies, multiple Fulmars, flocks of Red Phalaropes, Kittiwakes,
and even a very late Great Shearwater! Other birds we often find on
this trip include Atlantic Puffin, Common and Thick-billed Murre,
Razorbill, Glaucous, Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, and Bonaparte's
Gulls, Black-legged Kittiwake, and numbers of Northern Gannets. We
also see nearshore birds on our way out like Common and Red-throated
Loons, all 3 scoters (White-winged tends to be further offshore than
Surf or Black), and other sea ducks.

The trip cost is $185. The boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at
roughly 6:00 PM. To make a reservation, contact us by phone at
215-234-6805 or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com.

Results and photos from past winter pelagics can be found on "Paulagic
Birding" on Facebook.

Hope to see you aboard.

American Crow © Kevin J. McGowan

27 January 2014

Let’s talk crows!

Dear bird enthusiast,

I’ve been studying the biology and complex family lives of American Crows—and
yes, talking about them—for more than 25 years. I’m thrilled that I can now
talk about my favorite species in two new Cornell Lab
webinars.
Many people have questions about crows based on their own encounters and there
are quite a few misconceptions about this highly intelligent and human-like
bird.

The crow webinars cost $10 each, and will each be 90 minutes long so there will
be plenty of time for questions. We’ll be offering two sessions of each
webinar:
•Part 1: The basic facts of American Crow
life,
 Wednesday, January 29, 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
•Part 2: The secret life of the American
Crow,
 Wednesday, February 12, 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.

I hope you’ll join us! Go to the Cornell Lab
E-Store
to register. Registration closes the night before the scheduled seminars, so
sign up
now.
I can’t wait to get started!
