Highlights of reports received February 6 through February 13 from the Niagara Frontier Region. Three reports of rare in winter EASTERN TOWHEES at feeders this week - one on February 6 in Springville in southern Erie County, another for the past week in Clarence, and a third EASTERN TOWHEE, daily since January 1 in Gowanda, in northern Cattaraugus County. A very rare in winter reported ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK at a feeder at Sunset Beach, on Lake Ontario in Orleans County. With any rare report, it is always of interest to note the plumage or sex of the reported species. SNOWY OWLS continue their great winter irruption. Two to three reported again on Route 62 in the Cattaraugus County Town of Dayton, including one on the gates to the Countryside Gravel Ponds. Other SNOWY OWLS - Town of Collins, flying over Niagara Falls Blvd. toward the Niagara Falls Airport, and the Pembroke exit of the New York State Thruway. February 10, SNOWY OWL on Meahl Road, south of Route 31 in the Niagara County Town of Cambria, with 14 SHORT-EARED OWLS and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. Two dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS this week - one on River Road in Tonawanda near the Grand Island bridges, and a second on West Sheridan Road near the Dunkirk-Chautauqua County Airport. February 9, a possible NORTHERN GOSHAWK was photographed in the Niagara Falls highway salt barn on New Road at Porter Road. More frigid weather has reduced open water at Dunkirk Harbor, further concentrating waterfowl and raptors. February 8, on the ice beyond the main breakwall, at least 35 BALD EAGLES. Close to the main pier, over 20 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and one SURF SCOTER. Also multiple GLAUCOUS GULLS and ICELAND GULLS in harbor. February 12 in the Lake Ontario Plains, a record flock of SNOW BUNTINGS, estimated at 5000, on Hulbert Road in the Niagara County Town of Wilson. Among the buntings, 100 HORNED LARKS and 12 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. In Genesee County, 250 SNOW BUNTINGS with several HORNED LARKS and a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR on McLernon Road in Bethany. Other reports this week - a pair of COMMON RAVENS in southern Cattaraugus County. NORTHERN SHRIKE with NORTHERN HARRIER at Oak Orchard Ridge Road in the Iroquois Refuge. Another NORTHERN SHRIKE at Darien Lakes State Park, with RED-BR. NUTHATCH, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, 10 AMERICAN ROBINS and 30 CEDAR WAXWINGS. On Lake Ontario at Sunset Beach, 70 SNOW GEESE. NORTHERN PINTAIL among the MALLARDS and AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS at Forest Lawn in Buffalo. PILEATED WOODPECKER plus AMERICAN ROBINS and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at Birdsong Park in Orchard Park. And at Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island, 3 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 2 BROWN CREEPERS and a YELLOW- R. WARBLER. The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, February 20.
