[nysbirds-l] Montauk CBC Preliminary Results

2014-12-22 Thread Angus Wilson
The Montauk CBC was held on Saturday (20 Dec 2014) and enjoyed both good
weather and an excellent turnout of energetic counters from far and near.
Scouting efforts before the count produced almost no stakeout rarities and
in fact indicated low numbers of birds across the circle, however things
came together nicely on the day.

A total of 127 species (not final) were tallied, with highlights and saves
in every territory. These included Eurasian Wigeon (2), King Eider (4),
Harlequin Duck (2), Red-necked Grebe (10), Bald Eagle (8), Northern Goshawk
(1), Rough-legged Hawk (2), Razorbill (293), Barn Owl (1), Snowy Owl (2),
Saw-whet Owl (1), Fish Crow (3), Hermit Thrush (67), Orange-crowned Warbler
(1), Clay-colored Sparrow (1), Saltmarsh Sparrow (1), Nelson's Sparrow (1),
Lincoln's Sparrow (2), Purple Finch (11), Common Redpoll (2), and Pine
Siskin (1).

Notable misses, though not without determined efforts to find each of them,
were Snow Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, American Kestrel, Wilson's
Snipe, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Black-legged Kittiwake, and Eastern
Meadowlark.

Sadly, 'Larry' the Lesser Black-backed Gull that has wintered at Lazy Point
for the past 10 years or more has not been seen this season. Faithful Larry
often provided a save for the species on this count. Hopefully he/she was
simply delayed in customs on route from Greenland. Likewise, a Short-eared
Owl that showed well over the Napeague Marshes on Friday evening decided to
sleep late on the important day and was missed.

Great work everyone!

The next Montauk CBC will be held on Saturday 19th December 2015. Mark your
calendars and drop us a line if you want to be added to our mailing list.
We have plenty of room for more counters.

Angus Wilson and Karen Rubinstein

[nysbirds-l] question on Screech Owls at Massapequa Preserve

2014-12-22 Thread John Lazzaro
Hello Everyone,

I am curious as to if anyone has had success in locating Screech Owls at
the Massapequa Preserve. I've scouted the area around the Walker Street
entrance but was unsuccessful. Can anyone suggest a good spot/location to
look? I would be most gracious.

thanks!

High counts of bald eagle (34) pileated WP (19), American pipit (41 all at
croton point), and both eastern bluebird and common raven (can't recall the

brown thrasher, Virginia rail, marsh wren, red breasted nuthatch, white crowned
sparrow, purple finch, American kestrel, peregrine falcon, snow goose, wood
duck, also seen: 4 redhead, 210 canvasback, 9 rusty blackbird, 2 yellow rumped
warbler (no other warblers), catbird, 12 savannah sparrow, 27 wild turkey, and
several owl species including 2 N. Saw whet and many E. Screech (95 species in

Re: [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl problem

2014-12-22 Thread Rick & Linda Kedenburg

Dear Mr. Lazaro,
What you describe has been an ongoing problem for as long as I can
remember.

The blatant type of harassment you describe is against the law as
useless expenditure of energy threatens the owls very lives.

If you see this again call for a DEC Wildlife Enforcement Officer.
People should carry thees #'s with their cell phones.

Region 1 (Long Island) Law enforcement # is 631-444-0250

On weekends statewide call the 24/7 Dispatch # 877-457-5680

Although the officer may not get there in time just telling the folks
involved in the harassment that a DEC cop is on the way could solve
the problem.

Thank you for posting this.
Rick K. NYS-DEC WRL

On Dec 21, 2014, at 9:50 PM, John Lazaro wrote:

Today my girlfriend and I had the pleasure of seeing a beautiful
snowy owl at Jones Beach next to the jetty. As we approached the
jetty we saw the bird fly in and settle close to a pair of
photographers.

As we watched the photographers approach the bird, they caused it
to fly further down the beach. I thought it was unfortunate that
the bird was disturbed like that and was incredulous as I watched
the photographers walk down the beach to where the bird had landed
and flushed it again.

Upon speaking with some other birders at the jetty we discovered
that these same photographers had been there for two hours chasing
this poor bird up and down the beach.

I have seen this behavior before in Maine. The attitude that these
birds exist only for us to take photos of them. The light wasn't
great today and one of the photographers was using a flash to try
and light the birds beautiful eyes.

I'm appealing to all of my fellow birders to help discourage this
kind of behavior. These birds have value as individuals and deserve
a rest after their long journey. They are exhausted and just need
some nice prey and a safe place to rest.

I'm hoping that the photographers I saw today are reading this post
and will refrain from treating other wild animals in this manner.

Happy birding and Happy Holidays to you all.

Staten Island's 106th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was conducted this past
Saturday. 49 people, in eleven teams, took to the woods, fields and
shoreline to count each individual bird they could identify in their specific
territory. After sunset, many gathered in the basement of the Staten Island
Museum to tabulate totals for each species identified during the day. Others
reported in totals through email and a final tabulation will be sent to the
 Audubon Society.

94 species were identified on Saturday. 7 other species were reported during
Count Week and are included in the species totals bringing our official count
to 101 species. Of those 101 species, Staten Island recorded HIGH counts for
 10 species. Red-necked Grebe (5), Gadwall (460), Bald Eagle (2), Screech Owl
 (17), Belted Kingfisher (16), Northern Flicker (68), Red-bellied Woodpecker
(66), Hairy Woodpecker (28), Downy Woodpecker (161) and Junco (722). The
HIGH count for Orange-crowned Warbler was tied at 3 and a new species was
added to the overall historical list for the CBC, a Pileated Woodpecker
 identified during Count Week.

It was an exciting day with good birds and better birders. I want to thank
Ed Johnson for entrusting me with the compiler position for our CBC and I
thank each birder who took part in one of Staten Island's oldest traditions.

 Happy Holidays,

 Cliff

[nysbirds-l] question on Screech Owls at Massapequa Preserve

2014-12-22 Thread John Lazzaro
Hello Everyone,

I am curious as to if anyone has had success in locating Screech Owls at
the Massapequa Preserve. I've scouted the area around the Walker Street
entrance but was unsuccessful. Can anyone suggest a good spot/location to
look? I would be most gracious.

thanks!
