2015-02-04 Thread John Gluth
This afternoon at Robert Moses State Park, among a large number of Horned Lark
(a few flocks totaling ~125 -- maximum single count of 80) were 2 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS (parking field 5) and 3 Snow Buntings (field 3).
10-15 Tree Sparrows were feeding along the roadside between the two parking
lots at Captree State Park.

Today, while we were heading west on the LIE, an adult, male (Gray Ghost)
was going in the same direction, as it hunted over a farm field on the w/s
Wading River Rd., s/o LIE, in Manorville (I don't remember ever seeing this
specie near this location before). It was ~ 2:30 PM, and we were en-route
to an afternoon movie, which we now can highly recommend..."The Theory of
Everything", a film about the life of Stephen Hawking, the British
Physicist.

It wasn't until we were on the way home, when it dawned on me that we had
seen a bird "hawking" on our way to see _ _ _ _ _ !

[nysbirds-l] Belmont Lake SP Geese/Suffolk County + Nassau add on's

2015-02-04 Thread Sean Sime
I checked on the goose flock roosting on Belmont Lake this morning. The
flock did not fly out first thing and was in view from just before 8:30
till 10 when I left. The 4 Greater White-fronted Geese continue as does a
single Cackling Goose, but I could not locate the Barnacle Goose. The birds
were not sleeping (packed tightly), but many birds were in the NW corner
out of view.
Another notable bird there was a first year Iceland Gull.

At Jones Beach there is grass exposed on the road shoulders and the
expected sparrows and warbler were using them in numbers. Horned Larks with
at least 1 Lapland Longspur were at the Coast Guard Station.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] LALOs in Orange County

2015-02-04 Thread Ken McDermott
Hi Folks, As in years past Missionland Road in Pine Island has risen to the position of "most reliable place" for LAPLAND LONGSPURS over the last two days.  Yesterday I had a message from Rob Stone in the early afternoon that there was a large collection there.  When I got out to there about 3:20pm I was able to find them all hanging around together and I had NINETEEN of them - - - - - the biggest number of this winter visitor that I have ever had in the area.  Several were coming into breeding plumage. Having passed the word on I was pleased to hear from Bill Fiero that he was out there today and he had about a dozen.  Joe Cullen got out there in mid-afternoon and was able to enjoy three of the Longspurs. If the weather stays reabarsonable, NOW is the time to be SLOWLY driving Missionland Road for its' rewards. Good luck and GOOD BIRDING,   Ken McDermott

At about 1:30 PM today a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk was seen feeding

several Horned Grebes. Dune Rd itself was a bit of a slog, snow covered

[nysbirds-l] Ravens @ Stuyvesant Town Manhattan NYC

2015-02-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
Anne Lazarus, reports two Ravens seen and heard around Stuyvesant Town over
the past few days.

I believe, Anne, Louise Fraza and Wendy saw a Raven during their CBC.

Birders in the area are encouraged to keep an eye and ear out for the
Ravens. Who knows, they might nest somewhere nearby.

Many thanks to Anne and her crew for their dedicated "patch birding" and
sharing the intel on interesting discoveries.

Cheers,

2015-02-04 Thread gabriel willow
Thanks for the heads-up Richard.  FWIW, I just called to have my first printing
replaced, and the customer service guy on the phone sounded a bit overwhelmed.
He said they've been getting thousands of calls this morning since this news
was posted on the internet, but that there wasn't a wholesale replacement
program or policy in effect.  According the rep, one person had called, and the
publisher had offered to replace their volume since they were dissatisfied with
it.  But it's not a more comprehensive policy than that, and he wasn't sure if
they'd be able to replace mine or not.  We shall see...

The colors were off, and more importantly, the print too light, making it very

Subsequent printings were fine.
It was a huge disappointment to many of us Sibley fans.
The voluntary action by Knopf is commendable.
