[nysbirds-l] Red shouldered Hawk

2015-02-12 Thread Andreas Kanon
The Red Shouldered hawks are back in the marsh behind our house in Harriman
again. Most likely nesting in the area as they have been coming back for 3
years now and I can hear their calls on occasion.

Here's a link to some photos I took of one of them he was eyeing the
squirrels at our birdfeeder.

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots - Updated for Feb/2015

2015-02-12 Thread Ben Cacace
The wiki pages for NYS eBird hotspots are updated for the month of
Feb/2015. These pages provide supplemental information and easy/direct
access to many eBird.org pages. Hopefully they will provide the details
needed for each of the hotspots covered.

The pages on the wiki covers each of the 62 counties. There are currently
15 counties that have details for individual hotspots for a total of 207
pages covering a 741 hotspots. This is roughly 20% of the 3,800+ hotspots
for all of New York State.

The counties with pages for hotspots are highlighted in gold and green in
the alphabetical listing at the bottom of the home page.

Updating the pages includes correcting the species number for the tables on
the county pages and for New York State. The color coding which highlights
each county and hotspot location is based on the species total. These
colors are based on the colors used on the eBird.org maps and range from
gray to blue to green to yellow to orange to red from lowest # of species
to highest.

A discussion section has been added to each page. If you'd like to add
comments, critiques, suggestions for links or descriptions for the county
or location pages you can sign up for a wikispaces account. To join you'll
need to provide a username, password, email account and you can answer no
to the "Make a wiki?" query.

A new species has been added to the New York State totals (currently 464
spp.) but since the new state species is not a recent find it is not so
easy to determine which is the addition.

Here's the main page. You can get to each of the counties through the
clickable map or the alphabetical list of counties with the NYC area
grouped at the end of the list.

http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/Birding+in+New+York

You can view a test discussion I setup on the following page:

Other highlights seen during my 5 hour visit included the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
found by Ken Feustel yesterday, and a roaming flock of ~30 COMMON REDPOLL.
Photos of these also in checklist.

[nysbirds-l] dune road - EPCAL

2015-02-12 Thread leormand .
Dune road was very quiet today. Large portions of Tiana Bay are frozen
over with black ducks and gulls everywhere. Only saw one Northern Harrier
that we spooked from the shoulder of the road. Plenty of Scoters near the
inlet (on the west side of the jetty) but didn't spend the time to see if
anything interesting and unusual was in there.

EPCAL was very quiet (did a quick drive-thru) and security was posted at
the entrance to the runway. No sighting of the Artists' Lake/Patchogue
Lake bald eagle either. Patchogue lake did have a few Canvasback ducks
though

Also visited the mouth of the Carmans River - a few species of ducks
including coots. One Northern Harrier - but nothing else of note.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon NO 2/12

2015-02-12 Thread Gabriel Willow
David Burg and I scoured the area around Blue Chip Farm & the Shawangunk
Grasslands in Wallkill for the Gyrfalcon today from about 9-1. We did not
locate the bird; however, we also noted a surprising absence of other birders,
only encountering 2 or 3, so it's entirely possible the bird was hiding out
somewhere undetected (there's a lot of meadows & woods to cover up there).

We went down Old Hoagerburgh Rd, Bates Ln/ Old Fort Rd, Burnt Meadows Rd, Red
Mill Rd & Watchtower Farm, and Sax/Sac Rd, to no avail.

However, we had a lovely morning and some other nice sightings:

Numerous Red-tailed Hawk (at least 9)
Rough-legged Hawk (2 dark morph & 2-3 light morph, mostly at the Grasslands)
Turkey Vulture (2)
Black Vulture (2)
Merlin (1 female)
American Kestrel (1 male)
Wild Turkey (flock of 19)
Pileated Woodpecker (a confiding pair at close range)
Eastern Bluebird (flock of 5 at Grasslands parking lot)
American Tree Sparrow
Typical feeder birds (titmice, chickadees, juncos, song sparrow etc)

I hope others locate the falcon!

Good winter birding,

Thanks for the update Curt. There was someone reporting online to have seen
this bird yesterday around 2:00 pm near Bryun Turnpike. I asked for
clarification but did not get any.

I was curious whether this was a single observation given the many people
that were reported to be onsite. Not that it could not happen but it would
certainly help for those who are hopeful that the bird is still in the area.

To join you'll
need to provide a username, password, email account and you can answer no
to the Make a wiki? query.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Gyr Falcon 2/11 Not Seen

2015-02-12 Thread Andrew Baksh
Thanks for the update Curt. There was someone reporting online to have seen
this bird yesterday around 2:00 pm near Bryun Turnpike. I asked for
clarification but did not get any.

I was curious whether this was a single observation given the many people
that were reported to be onsite. Not that it could not happen but it would
certainly help for those who are hopeful that the bird is still in the area.

Cheers,
