[nysbirds-l] Oceanside

2015-05-19 Thread syschiff
Marine Nature Study Area 19 May

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) walked around on a foggy day. The west side of
the pond harbored the birds associated with a marsh environment; namely, 2
CLAPPED RAILS, 2 MARSH WRENS and 2 singing SEASIDE SPARROWS in the phragmites
along the trail. Saltmarsh Sparrows have not arrived yet. A few hundred
shorebirds of the 6 commoner species gave us some things to do..

There was no breeze and the "no-see-ums" were very annoying. Bring bug-juice.

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn: Black-headed Gull Now

2015-05-19 Thread Doug Gochfeld
There is currently an immature Black-headed Gull standing on the mudflats
off the eastern tip of Plum Beach.
The tide is going out, so the flats that it is standing on should still be
exposed for another 3-5 hours.
Car acess to this location is from the eastbound Belt Parkway only.

Good birding

[nysbirds-l] Kentucky Warbler -- Sunken Meadow State Park (Suffolk County)

2015-05-19 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
A beautiful male Kentucky warbler is singing and foraging rather close just off
the Inner Marsh trail at Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk county. He's
offering marvelous views as I write this. His relentless singing is what made
me start looking for him in the first place. In addition, I observed both
species of cuckoo and over a dozen species of warblers including Blackburnian
and Canada on my hike so far.
