Re: [nysbirds-l] Banded Little Blue Heron at JBWR

2015-09-12 Thread Richard Guthrie
I'm informed through a Corps of Engineers Notice (thanks Deborah) that
Elders Marsh is a restored wetland within Jamaica Bay consisting of joining
two "islands" and raising their elevation using dredge spoils. The original
islands were once part of a 1,400 acre saltmarsh/island complex consisting
of 132 acres but since reduced to 21 acres. This project is intended to
restore wetlands and upland habitat. Expensive ($11.5 Million) but it
sounds like a worthwhile and beneficial use of dredge spoils. The old
practice would have been to ship the material out to the NY Bight and dump
them off shore.

Interesting.

Band return results are always interesting.

So, where is Elders Marsh? Safe to assume it's close to Jamaica Bay?

2015-09-12 Thread Ardith Bondi
Hi Steve-

That same Little Blue was there last Sunday. The band looked like one of Susan
Elbin's, so I sent her the numbers. Sure enough, she said she banded it this
year at Elders Marsh on July 14. I was actually able to read the first 4
numbers on the silver band. She said the federal band is 1146 94 630. It must
like the East Pond.

The same day, I also had a Little Blue at Plumb Beach, but it wasn't banded.

[nysbirds-l] Banded Little Blue Heron at JBWR

2015-09-12 Thread Steve Walter
I photographed an immature Little Blue Heron with bands at Jamaica Bay's
East Pond today- yellow band on the left leg with "1Z" in black and a silver
band on the right leg, with what looks like an engraved "4" (I can't make
out if there's more). While I've been seeing Little Blues for weeks, I can't
say that I've noticed bands before - not that I'm really looking at them
beyond picking them out from the Snowy Egrets. But I wasn't real close to
this one today and the yellow band was quite evident. So perhaps this is an
arrival from another locale. It certainly seemed that Snowy and Great Egret
numbers increased quite a bit. If they're congregating or staging from
elsewhere, the geographic range would be of interest. I say this thinking
about a Little Egret probably still floating around. Just saying.

Still a Gull-billed Tern around. I don't think it's a state late date yet,
but my own recollections don't include any staying beyond August.
Shorebirds? Eh. I only did the south end. For the first time in years that I
can remember, a Black-bellied Plover landed on the south end, albeit way out
on the algae mat. Least Sandpipers were numerous and they now outnumber
Semis. I spent time working on techniques for identifying lone tweener
Yellowlegs. This one works - wait for one of the other species to cross
paths with it.

[nysbirds-l] Jones and Nickerson Beaches

2015-09-12 Thread Tim Healy
This morning Jones Beach was largely devoid of migrant landbirds, instead
hosting high counts of biting flies. I missed Bob Anderson's earlier Dickcissel
and RB Grosbeak, though I did have two separate flyover Bobolinks, headed
roughly northeast while "pink"ing distinctively. Several Merlins were seen
coursing over the dunes and dogfighting with each other, and there were two
near-adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the West End 2 parking lot. The sandbar
held good numbers and variety at high tide, including Western Willets,
yellowlegs, dowitchers, plovers, and many oystercatchers. The dune ponds are
ponds once more, featuring Blue-winged Teal, a lone Shoveler, and some Solitary
Sandpipers along with more typical fare.

Nickerson's tern colony is still bustling with several hundred skimmers and
Common Terns alike. All youngsters I saw were flighted or close to it, though
some were still being fed. Five Black Terns were found amidst the throng, and
another near-adult LBB Gull was seen in the surf.

[nysbirds-l] Grasspipers in Suffolk County

2015-09-12 Thread David Klauber
Autocorrect wreaked havoc on my post. It doesn't like many words like
grasspipers, Riverhead, Northville, and plovers are apparently lovers.

A bit more detail

We saw the Common Gallinule and about 5 Solitary Sandpipers around 8 AM on the
Calverton pond previously mentioned. A few Grasshopper Sparrows were present
north of the Calverton / Grumman property. Around 9 we ran into Mary Normandia
who was looking at about 10 scattered Golden Plovers (with a P, no lovers) on
the northern part of Northville Turnpike, which disappeared a little while
later. From the fireman's facility further south another group (Michael Yuan?)
found 1 Golden with a few Killdeer. More unusual was an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull by the junction of Doctor's Path and Reeves Avenue. Farm
machinery was active which didn't help. Later we found 2 Buff-breasted
Sandpipers with about 10 Killdeer on the southwestern portion of the field on
Osborne Avenue, south of Sound Avenue. There had been a few buffies the evening
before near the fireman's facilty

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Basin night migration

2015-09-12 Thread Bill Evans
There was an exceptionally large flight of songbirds down the Hudson River
corridor last night. An acoustic station southeast of Albany detected 4000+
flight calls of migrant warblers. This is the fourth year of monitoring fall
flight calling from this location atop the Columbia Land Conservancy building
in downtown Chatham, NY. During this period there have been 6 nights with 2000+
calls, 3 nights with 3000+ calls, and last night was the first with 4000+.
http://oldbird.org/Data/2015/CLC/ColumbiaLC.htm

There is no indication the calling was exacerbated due to disorientation by
artificial light -- it appeared to be just one and sometimes two calls per
individual passing over. This suggests an unusually large pulse of migrants
today in the NYC area, 100 miles to the south.

Channel Addabbo Bridge, not all that far from where the bird is hanging out.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Banded Little Blue Heron at JBWR

2015-09-12 Thread Ardith Bondi
Hi Steve-

That same Little Blue was there last Sunday. The band looked like one of Susan
Elbin's, so I sent her the numbers. Sure enough, she said she banded it this
year at Elders Marsh on July 14. I was actually able to read the first 4
numbers on the silver band. She said the federal band is 1146 94 630. It must
like the East Pond.

The same day, I also had a Little Blue at Plumb Beach, but it wasn't banded.

Interesting.

Band return results are always interesting.

So, where is Elders Marsh? Safe to assume it's close to Jamaica Bay?
