Re: [nysbirds-l] Via Facebook: Croton Point Lark Sparrow YES

2015-12-15 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
Is there a reason these folks refuse to get the word out on NYS birds before
the end of day and instead wait to (I assume)crop photos to put up on Facebook
after the birding day is over. Just asking. If I see something of interest at
the Point I always try and post quickly to NYSBirds, which everyone then sees
promptly and folks can decide if a trip is worth it. Of course it takes all of
ten or twenty seconds to do that so perhaps it's too much effort when there's a
rare bird at the Point or elsewhere. And yes curmudgeons such as myself are not
(and won't be) on Facebook. And so it goes.

Good luck on this week's CBCs. One more day and the Lark sparrow will make
"count week", at least, for the Northern Westchester - Peekskill count.

Bird was found this morning by Dick Veit and access is off limits. However I
just saw it soaring with 2 Red-tails from the FedEx parking lot on Richmond
Avenue. Google Dick's Sporting Goods on Richmond Avenue and bird was seen
soaring over landfill basically across from there. No access to landfill and
far from good views but the bird was seen distantly. Bring a scope and good
luck.

[nysbirds-l] No Sightings/ January Pelagic info

2015-12-15 Thread Sean Sime
With permission from the List-owner I'm posting to announce upcoming
pelagic trip dates.

The 2016 Paulagics calendar is set and can be seen in detail at
http://paulagics.com/?page_id=27.

We have two different trips running in January out of Sheepshead Bay,
Brooklyn.

1- January 9th: 8-hour trip targeting inshore waters across multiple NY
counties as well as getting offshore far enough to enter the "Murre Zone."
This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce someone new to the pelagic
experience without breaking the bank, as well as for all the listers out
there to get a jump on 2016! Both Razorbill and Dovekie have been reported
inshore this week and over 1000 Bonaparte's Gulls have been working the
rips between Gravesend Bay and Sandy Hook, in addition to the usual
obligatory large gulls. There's no better way to find something rarer then
to get out there with them!

2- January 23rd: Special 14-hour (old ones were 12) offshore trip to deep
water targeting Dovekie, Northern Fulmar, Razorbill, Common Murre, Atlantic
Puffin, Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Black-legged
Kittiwake, Red Phalarope, and dare we say it Great Skua (There was a
distant Skua on this trip two winters ago that was almost certainly a
Great, but circumstances didn't allow us to pursue it). While Great Skua is
a bit of a longshot, because of their needle in a haystack nature, all the
other species mentioned are decent bets. This is the trip known as "The
Dovekie Trip," and in the past it has connected with several THOUSAND!! It
is also by far the best way to see Atlantic Puffin in New York.

Both trips will be aboard the fast and stable Brooklyn VI. The boat has a
heated cabin as well as a full galley and cook on board, and a phenomenally
birder friendly crew. We really hope you'll join us on board!

Registration will officially open December 23rd, but an email to the
address below will be sufficient to reserve a space. Our trips board in the
order in which people sign up. More information on signing up can be found
at the following link.

[nysbirds-l] Ulster/Dutchess (NYUD) Christmas Bird Count

2015-12-15 Thread forsythnature

Good Morning All,
The CBC season has started...as they say "It's the most wonderful time. of
the year" and it's not too late to signup to participate in the Ulster/Dutchess
(NYUD) count to be held on Saturday, December 26th. This is a great way to
avoid the apres clean up and stay clear of over-staying relatives. The NYUD is
a circle comprised of sections of four counties (Ulster, Ducthess, Greene, and
Columbia) and is nearly bisected by the Hudson River, with good and varied
habitat in all ten sectors. In our first four efforts we have averaged 84.5
species with a cumulative list of 111 species so it promises to be a fun and
productive day in the field. Several field parties could still use another set
of eyes or ears so consider joining us! Please contact me with questions or
for assignment.

[nysbirds-l] Suffolk Tufted Duck - no

2015-12-15 Thread d Futuyma
I follow yesterday's negative report on the Tufted Duck with another. All the
Aythyas that I can see are fairly close, clustered about the small island in
the western part of Capri Lake, and the Tufted is not among them.

[nysbirds-l] Bronx Zoo: Wilson's Warbler

2015-12-15 Thread Todd Olson
There's currently a male Wilson's Warbler flitting between bamboo clumps
near the (closed for season) monorail entry at Wild Asia Plaza. Active
and calling.
